The Baton Rouge Zoo is quite a drive for most folks -- unless you're one of the lucky ones who live in North Baton Rouge, near the Baker area. Coming from Denham Springs, it's a 45 minute to 1 hour drive, depending on traffic...and that drive gives my kids quite a long time to get keyed up in anticipation...but they are NEVER disappointed!
The Baton Rouge Zoo has all of the exotic animals you'd expect -- giraffes, elephants, zebras, all sorts of monkeys -- and they have some other relatively new additions, too. The Aquarium is cool (thankfully, in the blisteringly hot Louisiana heat), it's dark (the lighting comes from the many tanks built into the wall), and there are lots of varieties of fish, snakes, and other reptiles to see...plus my favorite, the stingray!
Another new addition is the Otter Pond. You may remember the old otter pond, a little round pool to the left when you entered the zoo. Now, in the center of the zoo next to the aquarium, the otters have their own entire habitat built, with a glass wall that lets you see the otters swim underwater as well as above.
There is new equipment in the kids' playground, and it's very nice, durable hard plastic. My kids, age 5 and 9, both have a blast there. The playground is next to the petting zoo, which is also a favorite.
The zoo has a food area that sells burgers, fries, popcorn, and the like. Prices are about average.
If you have a family of 4 and you plan to visit the zoo more than twice in a year, the annual pass is a great value at $35. You can choose from other membership options that allow you to bring more guests or have a caregiver bring your kids in your absence.
For an additional charge, you can ride the train, rent strollers, or visit the (very nice!) gift shop.
If you're looking for a fun way to spend a few hours with the family, don't forget the Baton Rouge Zoo!

Lots of fun activities for everyone. Huge water slides , a wave pool and there is even a section for the tiny tots to swim and play. They hold concerts and other fun and exciting activities to suit the whole family. If your in town and looking for something really fun to do with your family then i'd suggest blue bayou.

Celebration station is a great place for children's birthday's or other special occasions. There is a large variety of games and a few outdoor attractions. Downsides: There isn't much for adults to do, and the tokens can get pricey. Also, it tends to be pretty busy, unless you can go during a school day, so it's good for school field trips.

When I moved here from St. Louis, I was somewhat disappointed in the movie theaters here. Luckily, the Rave opened soon after and I have never gone anywhere since. It has true stadium seating, big comfortable seats with the armrests that you can raise to essentially create your own couch for snuggling, and 12 screens so whatever you want to see will most likely be showing. The sound and picture quality are always first rate as well. I also like the digital readouts for the movies inside and out - I've found the ones that are still done by hand are sometimes behind the time. If you go with someone (or just really like popcorn) you may want to get the large bucket, which has free refills. My husband is addicted to this stuff, so we refill on the way out and put it in a ziplock when we get home for later snacking.

In 1987, I was a teenager and I thought Photon was about the coolest thing ever.
In 2006, now a mother of two, I think Laser Tag is about the coolest thing ever.
Photon was THE place to go in '86-'88. It was a laser tag arena located right off College Drive in what's now a Wherehouse Music. Players broke into teams, red or green, and wore bulky equipment that shot invisible lasers at each other. You scanned your membership card each time you played, which contained your game alias, so you could see your personal score at the end of the game. And of course you'd want your entire team's score to beat the other guys'. The arena was two levels, dark, with pulsating lights, space-age music, mazes, and a fog machine. There were Photons all over the country, including New Orleans, Houston, and Dallas. One by one they closed, with Dallas being the last one in our area to shut down. (Baton Rouge closed in '88.)
Last year, Photon re-emerged in the form of Laser Tag of Baton Rouge. In a new location, next to the old Albertson's building off Airline Highway, it uses the IDENTICAL floor plan to the old Baton Rouge Photon (well, my husband would disagree, I think there's one little difference, but most people wouldn't notice).
The equipment is much different than at the old Photon -- no more helmets, and the chest/back plate just slips over your head and it's oh-so-light! Lasers are now visible (which has pros and cons), and although members have ID cards, you don't have to be a member to play, and those who are members are given a little device to slip into their gun before the game to identify them as members and attach their game alias to that particular gun.
Members get a price discount ($3.50 a game) and get to use their own game alias. They are able to track their stats over time and see how they stack up against other members. Membership costs $25 a year. Non members pay a little more (around $4.50 a game) and they have to note the game alias on the gun they choose in order to see their own score.
You have to be at least 7 years old AND 48 inches tall to play the game. Laser Tag of Baton Rouge also offers birthday parties and lock-ins. They sell concessions (basic stuff like pizza, candy bars, and cokes). There's an observation deck upstairs so you can watch the game in progress (you can even buy a token to use the practice lasers upstairs, and shoot the players in the current game). There's a game room downstairs with various video games.
You can get more information at their website, http:www.ltofbr.com
This game can be strenuous -- there are ramps that go upstairs, and while they tell you to stay so-many feet away from other players and not run, sometimes things get a little wild. Another tendency I've found is that OCCASIONALLY the guys' testosterone will get out of control and they'll start yelling things at you and getting a little out of hand. There are employees who monitor the games, and I had them throw one guy out who was getting hostile with me. So...with that caveat...
This game is awesome! It gets your blood pumping, it gets you moving, it is like nothing you've ever experienced before or will again! Take a date, take a friend, go alone, but GO!

I usually prefer to rent movies and watch at home, but occasionally I like to go to the theater, and this is always the one i choose. As the previous reviewer stated, their seating is generous compared to most theaters. It's also very well kept and clean. Movie tickets are expensive everywhere, so this isn't a fault of the theater.

Great venue to see any live show or performance. It has a great atmosphere and shares a lot of the same great qualities that make the Chimes, it's neighbor, so popular. The weekends are always packed, and there is a lot of fun stuff to do during the week. Always full of good looking people, too.

I love the Rave. It is the only theater in town that I will go to. They have ton's of parking, and great ticket booths. They have recently started upgrading their video projection equipment. About half of their screen are now digital screens. These are amazing, the picture is so clear and crisp. It is a totally different movie experience. I would recommend to anyone to watch a digital movie at this fine theater.
