The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is a world class group that does not get the recognition it deserves in its own home town. While i enjoy listening to recorded music, there is nothing like a live concert. Just being able to watch the musicians play adds so much to my enjoyment of the music. The BSO's programs are varied and interesting and they make an effort to appeal to a wide range of listening tastes. The hall is pleasant and comfortable and you can get delicious desserts and snacks before the concert and during intermission. There is a bar and a nice gift shop also. Check it out!

More
The Hippodrome is Baltimore's newest theater and is the location of most shows these days. I have only been once but am going again for a second time in February. We had to wait in the lobby before the doors were opened to the actual theater part. But there were several benches along the wall which were nice to sit on and just look around at the new building. They were selling merchandise for the artist who I was there to see as well as sodas and light snacks. The actual theater is beautiful. We were seated in the very back but there is still a nice view from back there. It's smaller than the Lyric theater but still gives a great experience for any show!

More
The Peabody Institute is a world-class musical conservatory, with one of the strongest opera programs in the country. They have recently undergone a full-scale renovation to their main building and performance hall. I loved attending the Friday night concerts featuring my colleagues and friends enrolled at Peabody. Ticket prices are fairly reasonable, and the music is unbelievable. This venue is one of the best in Baltimore, so be sure to check it out!

More
The Meyerhoff Symphony Hall is a beautiful looking hall with somewhat less than beautiful acoustics. Sound engineers have been tinkering with it ever since it was built though I think now they have it about as good as it's going to get. They have removed features and added others in an effort to get the sound as perfect as possible from all points in the hall but there are still some sections where you can hear some parts of the orchestra better than others.
Still, it's better than many and looks count for something, too. They do a variety of programs so there's something for everyone. The lobby is spacious and welcoming and you can get scrumptious desserts, snacks and drinks. There's also a little gift shop with beautiful arty things plus a good selection of CDs.

The Octopodes, usually decked out in their traditional black and blue ensemble, deliver a unique spin on standard acapella. The Johns Hopkins student group has impeccable pitch and rhythm; my biggest complaint is that there are so many members. When I think acapella, I think of a few people with strong voices; however, at the last concert I attended, the Octopodes resembled more of a small choir rather than an acapella group. Their musical selections is quite impressive, though, and I commend their musicality. They have a few CDs, but I am not aware of any touring; catch them during their fall or spring performances in Schafler Auditorium or the Mattin Center.

More
The Vocal Chords are a very talented group of college students at Johns Hopkins University. Their acapella performances range somewhere between the comical antics of the Mental Notes and the more formal Octopodes. They tend to perform covers of recent pop selections, but I've seen quite a mix of genre in their shows. They usually have at least two shows a year open to the public (one in the spring and one in the winter), and most are advertised on city radio stations about a week before. They've got a few CDs out and do regional touring at least once a year. Though neither the largest or the strongest group, the Vocal Chords' personalities will have you shouting "Encore!" Performances are almost always in Schafler Auditorium of Bloomburg Hall.

More
Nothing will cheer your spirits like the Johns Hopkins University Gospel Choir. You can tell that the members love singing and it shows through their impressive and energetic performances. Their uplifting songs, dancing, and overall presentation will warm your heart and reinvigorate you on even the most rainy of Baltimore days. Most performances are held in the Bunting Meyerhoff Interfaith Center.
