This museum started out as a venue for "outsider art", or art created by people who have no formal art training and who are not part of the art world in any way. They've kind of gotten away from that in that they are taking some work from established artists who work in an outsider style. But aside from that, it's still a very interesting museum and the building itself is worth the visit. Parking is tricky and the location is not exactly central but it's worth the effort to get there.

If you're expecting Matisse and Monet, this isn't the museum. If you are looking for "different" art and are willing to define the word "visionary" pretty darn broadly, then give the American Visionary Art Museum a chance. This place features amateur artists, and really de-emphasizes your standard wall-label and Old Masters' museum shtick. However, the downside is that some of the stuff verges on downright creepy. Do you really want to see a ton of artwork completed by inmates of state penitentiaries? Yes? Well, come on in!

Also this museum is known as an "alternative museum" because it displays artwork by artist who are self-taught. The art is great and it's a great place to go and see art from people who have defined art for themselves, and taught themselves about art.

This museum has some of the coolest modern art I have ever seen. Everything from a live and working Coney Island replica to face masks painted by mentally disabled people. They change the artwork a lot during the year so be sure to check it out often. The tree outside th eback is filled with pieces of glass which is also real cool. Since it's right next to the inner harbor there are plenty of other places to visit while you are there.

The American Visionary Art Museum is a must-see for both visitors and locals of the Charm City. Located in Federal Hill, the museum is packed with works by artists who lack formal training, many of whom have endured hardship in their lives. The creativity you see in their mostly mixed media work is incredible; on my first visit I encountered an enormous ship made entirely of toothpicks! The museum houses both permanent works and special exhibitions. It also houses a strong sculpture collection, The cafe is pretty good, and the museum shop is full of funky gifts. Each year the museum is involved with several special events, such as a parade of art cars; vehicles adorned with everything from hands to buttons to astroturf. A must see.

The American Visionary Arts Museum is bursting with unique masterpieces created by self-taught artists. Visitors are overwhelmed with color and form - this is no two-dimensional display. Even the outside of the building attracts the eye with colorful sculpture. The museum also boasts an excellent (though expensive) cafe. Definitely worth the trip!
