Old or new, decorative or fine, the best of the arts in Baltimore. Contributor on

The Scene Despite being less famous than, say, the National Gallery, the Baltimore Museum of Art is well known among connoisseurs and locals. Over the years, 200,000 square feet have been added to the original building, creating two new wings of display space. An additional 90,000 square feet of gardens create a lush park for sculptures.
The Collection The BMA has everything from ancient artifacts to 20th-century sculptures. Old Masters, American furniture and salvaged architectural elements are of special interest, but whether you prefer paintings or work in three dimensions, don't miss the contemporary art wing. Dollhouse and interior-design lovers will go wild for the miniature American and English rooms created by Eugene Kupjack, the dean of miniature-makers. The collection of early-American paintings offers a glimpse of what life was like in the colonies. Changing exhibits ensure that there is always something new to see.
