Atomic books is right in Hampden, in a cute little house. Its small, but don't let that fool you. There's a huge magazine and zine assortment, and lots and lots of interesting books to browse. Be on the lookout for readings and other activities here - it was lots of fun when the Found Magazine people came through! The prices are good, and you can be happy that your money is supporting a local institution.

While me and my daughter where in Baltimore we ran across this place she was excited to go inside because it is geared towards children books. I have to admit there is not a whole lot of bookstores just for children in the Baltimore area, which makes this place all the better. Great place with toys bokks play area and a great staff.

Normal's has been a staple of the Baltimore underground for some time, and the reason is simple: quality used books, music, movies, and magazines for cheap. Inside this quirky little storefront you'll find a maze of every genre of the written word, from rare to popular, old to new. It's a great place to find those coffee-table art books that cost $80 or more, discounted by at least half, but still in great shape.
Personally, I particularly like the used record section. I know I will always find a gem (or five) every time I go. You'll also find new releases from some of Baltimore's best "alternative" bands, such as Lungfish.
Make sure you set aside a good couple hours for browsing before your trip!

Even if you're not interested in books at all, just have a look at Barnes&Noble to see what spectacular shops can be made out of old industrial buildings! And if you want to shop for books, you'll spend hours there!

More
So many book stores today are so large that they only sell the most popular authors and finding anything specialty seems near impossible. One of the great things about "Mystery Loves Company" is that it focuses on one type of book. You know the people who work at the book store are going to be knowledgeable about the subject matter and you are more likely to find unique and original stories here.
Their website allows you to order books as well as click on links to see new releases, the autographed books they have among other links that the mystery fan might find interesting. Additionally you can sign up for a monthly mystery newsletter that will keep you up to date on books (and the store).
Their website address is http://www.mysterylovescompany.com/ and you can place on-line orders or browse a little about the store here, although I highly recommend stopping by their store if you love mystery books.

The Book Escape (located in Federal Hill) has a good selection of new, used and rare books to browse through.
Their website (http://www.thebookescape.com/) is a pretty good resource too: it links you to various things about their store (location, book lists, etc.) as well as gives you some good information on books.
They also rent out space for special events (such as book club meetings) to give you a location to meet up.

I'll start of by saying that Barnes & Noble is my favorite store in the world, and I have been to quite a few. The one in Downtown Batlimore, MD is one of the nicest ones I have been to. They have most any book you could imagine, and the people there are very attentive. I had multiple people ask if I needed anything, and I usually just politely told them that I was just browsing.

Red Emma's is a anarchist/communist coffee & book store in Mt. Vernon. It has agreat atmosphere, and there always seems to be something interesting going on there - movie screenings, readings, etc. The coffee is good, and its the only place in Mt. Vernon where you can pick up a copy of Bitch magazine, a favorite of mine. Enjoy!
