Nice selection of baked goods, good coffee. Special favorites: lemon poppyseed braid, almond-cherry luna, and thick slabs of toast with freezer jam. Especially good for those with allergies--this is one of the rare bakeries to offer both "regular" baked goods as well as a range of gluten-free products. Can be very busy, especially on weekend mornings, but catching up with neighbors is part of the fun. If you happen to be on the other end of the island, check out the BB outpost at Bay Hay & Feed.

I have tried Blackbird on numerous occasions, and every time I tell myself that it must just be an off day. All I hear is how great it is, and how good the food is. Yet, while the food is good, a little expensive, the service--yuk! The best way to describe it is the "Soup Nazi" meets your local bakery. I mean really, its coffee and a 5 dollar cookie, get over yourself.

It's really hard to beat the Blackbird, which is a short walk from the ferry terminal in downtown Winslow / Bainbridge Island. Pros: Cinnamon rols and orange rolls are unbelievable, but the local fav is the lemon-blackberry scone. Big, fluffy, with lots of fruit and flavor. The best deal in the house is toast -- thick slices of homemade oat-wheat bread with raspberry freezer jam for $1.25. Cons: Somewhat limited seating inside, but plenty of casual outdoor seating -- some covered -- right on the main drag. Do what the locals do -- come early on Saturday morning, have coffee and a baked good, then walk a block up the hill to the Saturday Farmers Market.
