Our cars were sanded by the flying shingles from our neighbor's roof during the past season's hurricanes. This included the windows and light covers. The crew at 64 West did a flawless job replacing the fenders and grill, repainting the cars, replacing the windows and generally repairing the damage. With all the extras we had to buy during the three hurricanes and decreased income due to work time lost, we had a hard time paying our deductible and they were great about working with us until we could pay that in full.

Follow the dots to Beall's Outlet store and save BIG! Even though this store is a bit unkempt and disorganized, it IS full of bargains. You just may have to dig a bit for the really good ones. If you're looking for a certain size, you'll have to look way beyond the racks with that size. The merchandise consists mostly of clothing for men, women and children but also includes clothing accessories, seasonal decorations, games, toys, bedding and household decor items. Another bargain lovers' delight.

Highlands County Habitat for Humanity has done great things in Avon Park, Sebring, Lake Placid and throughout our county. I can quickly think of several homes they've built for needy individuals who otherwise would not be able to own a home of their own. In the past year, in fact, they've built three homes about two miles down the road from us. Jane Breylinger has done a great job of bringing together and unifying the volunteers who work with this great group.

When we needed to get some trees cut down, Mr. Kiker received the best recommendations from everyone we asked. Even if they hadn't used him, they said his reputation was the best. As such, his prices are a little bit higher but his professionalism and expertise are worth it.

There have been a couple of times when I've really needed a tire but couldn't afford new tires. You know, a used tire to get me by until I could afford a nice new tire. Florida Tire Terminal has always been willing to sell me a used tire to get me through. They have never pressured me to spend more money than I had and have never made me feel like a bad person because I couldn't afford a new tire. They are in the back half of the building which sits on Main Street between the two sets of railroad tracks, so they can be a little difficult to find.

I got into a difficult situation and needed to borrow some money. The amount wasn't enough to necessitate a bank loan and I didn't want to ask my family for a loan. Some friends suggested that I go to AMSCOT. Because of all the negative things I'd always heard about them, I was afraid to go there; however, I didn't have much alternative. I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly the people working there were. They didn't ask why I needed to borrow the money and didn't lecture me about managing my money better (as my family might have). In the end, it was a pleasant experience. AMSCOT helped me get through a difficult time in my life and made the situation a little easier for me.
I've been back since then to "buy" money orders, which are FREE.

Bill Stephenson and his wife spend many, many hours gathering, organizing and distributing food, clothing, household articles and all the other items that the Church Service Center provides to people in need. When my husband was injured at work, there was a time when we needed food and the Church Service Center helped us out. Their help was given without judgment and they didn't ask for anything in return. The Stephensons are good, kind people - the kind of people this world needs more of.

When we first moved to Avon Park, everyone we met asked if we went to church and if so, where. After trying several other churches in town, we landed at First Baptist. We enjoy the Bible teaching, fellowship and activities here. We also cherish the support of all the friends we've made in the past 18 years.
