Freda's Fantasies intrigues me and I would love to be able to shop there, however, in the ten or so years I've known of its existence, I have never found it open. And I pass by there during daytime hours - not the middle of the night. There is a sign on the door with a phone number that says you can call for an appointment but that doesn't seem very convenient to me. From standing outside and looking in, the shop seems to be FULL of fabulous items. I just hope to be able to shop there one day.

Highlands County Habitat for Humanity has done great things in Avon Park, Sebring, Lake Placid and throughout our county. I can quickly think of several homes they've built for needy individuals who otherwise would not be able to own a home of their own. In the past year, in fact, they've built three homes about two miles down the road from us. Jane Breylinger has done a great job of bringing together and unifying the volunteers who work with this great group.

I got into a difficult situation and needed to borrow some money. The amount wasn't enough to necessitate a bank loan and I didn't want to ask my family for a loan. Some friends suggested that I go to AMSCOT. Because of all the negative things I'd always heard about them, I was afraid to go there; however, I didn't have much alternative. I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly the people working there were. They didn't ask why I needed to borrow the money and didn't lecture me about managing my money better (as my family might have). In the end, it was a pleasant experience. AMSCOT helped me get through a difficult time in my life and made the situation a little easier for me.
I've been back since then to "buy" money orders, which are FREE.

When we needed to get some trees cut down, Mr. Kiker received the best recommendations from everyone we asked. Even if they hadn't used him, they said his reputation was the best. As such, his prices are a little bit higher but his professionalism and expertise are worth it.

From summer youth camps to senior programs, they've got it all at South Florida Community College! South Florida Community College is a public community college serving DeSoto, Hardee, and Highlands Counties. It consists of several schools - the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Applied Sciences and Technologies, and the School of Adult and Community College. I've enjoyed several community college programs.
My favorite is the music program. The college is the sponsor of the SFCC Community Orchestra and the SFCC Highlands County Concert Band. These community music groups provide a forum for local musicians to share their talents. Concerts are held in the 1,500 seat auditorium.

Our local YMCA sponsors a lot of programs for such a small community and BMX racing is one of them. What was once an ugly, smelly garbage dump became a site where fill dirt and gravel were excavated. About 5 1/2 years ago, the local YMCA bought that site and turned it into what it is today - a fabulous BMX race track.
Practice sessions are usually held on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Races are held sporadically on Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. Contestants may register for the race between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m.

One of the reasons I like Publix is that it is a very clean store. I think a store that is clean in the areas I can see has a better chance of being clean in the areas I can't see and vice versa. Publix carries items I cannot find anywhere else (such as Bon Ami); and if they don't carry an item I'm looking for, they are very good about special ordering it. Although I find most of Publix's prices high, I can still find some good sale prices. I think their deli meats are the freshest of all our local grocery stores. Their service personnel are very nice and extremely helpful.

Follow the dots to Beall's Outlet store and save BIG! Even though this store is a bit unkempt and disorganized, it IS full of bargains. You just may have to dig a bit for the really good ones. If you're looking for a certain size, you'll have to look way beyond the racks with that size. The merchandise consists mostly of clothing for men, women and children but also includes clothing accessories, seasonal decorations, games, toys, bedding and household decor items. Another bargain lovers' delight.

Highlands Ridge offers two championship, eighteen hole courses: the North and South. The South Course opened in 1990 and was designed by architect Steve Smyers. Not overly lengthy, the South Course offers a variety of shots for all skill levels. There is a defined cut of rough along the tree lined fairways, demanding shot accuracy. The South Course plays from 4,469 to 6,176-yards and offers four sets of tees.
The North Course is the newer of the two tracks at Highlands Ridge. Designed by architect Dave Harman, the North Course opened for play in 2000. This course boasts rolling fairways and fast, well bunkered greens. Water comes into play on several holes. The North Course plays from 5,000 to a whopping 7,234-yards and offers five sets of tees.
Both courses play alongside a nature preserve, and many of the fairways are lined with mature oaks covered in Spanish moss. Highlands Ridge also boasts a complete practice facility, including a putting green, driving range and chipping area.

The Highlands Pedalers is a bicycle club for cyclists in Highlands County, Florida. This group of about 45 bicyclists can participate in weekly bike rides around Sebring, a once a month breakfast ride and in bigger events, too. Most of the bigger events are held outside the county. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at the Kenilworth Lodge.
Membership fees are $25 for individual, $30 for family and $10 for junior. A $30 family membership includes children 18 and younger. A junior membership is for those 18 and over. Shop time is $5 per visit.
A full individual membership, which includes shop time, costs $50; a full family membership, which includes shop time, is $55.
