All my Latin American friends and clients praise the authenticity of the food and enjoyed their drinks as well.
Pros: Great Food and Drinks, Reasonable Price
Cons: Lack of parking.

Both my wife and I got sick after eating there. Several years ago we were regulars and enjoyed their food, but after hugging the toilet today we won't be returning.

Read several reviews about the poor service, and couldn't disagree more. In a town where I've come to count on crappy to nonexistent service (yeah, pretty much everywhere), I feel pretty well cared for here. Water and Margarita refills were regular, more chips were offered, and meals showed fairly promptly considering how busy it was. One of the few places I've been where the appetizer showed up as an appetizer as opposed to with the meal.
The house margaritas are potent, and there are many flavors to choose from if the standard doesn't suit your taste. The queso is fair, and you can dress it up with the sides provided. So far, I've tried the Chilaquiles, chicken fajitas, Entomotades (sp?), and a shrimp/corn/mushroom fajita whose name I do not remember. All were excellent. The roasted pepper salsa (salsa bar is free, perhaps that has changed over time since a previous reviewer said otherwise) is excellent. Prices are reasonable as well.
Enjoy, just expect to have to walk a short distance since the lot is always full.
Pros: Salsa, margaritas, phenomenal food
Cons: parking and long-ish waits

i have been a patron of polvo's since they opened but it seems they have compromised their quality with all the influx of business they have enjoyed. not horrible, not great, i still go occasionally for the dive atmosphere but have discovered sago and it's really amazing.

Cons: food quality slip, slipping away....parking can be difficult

My boyfriend and i went to polvos for lunch today. We sat outside, took about 5 minutes to get two half empty glasses of water. Waited another 15 minutes, still no service we left. What made it worse was the we watched 3 waiters talk to each other and stand around the WHOLE time we were sitting. I called, they told me the manager was busy, to call back. I called back a waiter named Jackson got on the phone and told me too bad he had to go check on his tables. Judging from the lack of service when we were sitting i think it was MORE LIKELY HE WENT TO SMOKE than actually help a customer. I live in 78704 used to love polvos. I will never go back. I recommend you stay far far away. Try Torchy's tacos down the street. We did and it was much better! Polvos is the worst service in Austin.
Pros: Nothing anymore
Cons: SERVICE SERVICE SERVICE- JACKSON

HORRIBLE service. On top of it all, my debit card was charged more than once, for over $200. I am STILL trying to get this resolved. All employees of Polvo's have been extremely rude, unhelpful, and have lied multiple times about managers being present. I was told, "Its not our problem, call your bank". I will NEVER be back!!
Pros: Margaritas
Cons: EVERYTHING else.

Have you noticed how many people have given the service a poor rating? Pay attention to that, it's for a reason! My friends and I went last Wednesday and the service was atrocious. We arrived at 7. The waiter took our order at 7:30. The food arrived at 8:45. Chip bowls went unfilled as did our water. Our drinks, however (which we all know is the fastest way to jack up the tab) arrived quickly... once, in fact, before we had even ordered them, and our bill arrived so quickly that it was impossible to not feel that we were being rushed out. We were a group of 10 but half the tables weren't even filled, and service like that is never excusable.
My fajitas al pastor were a lot of pineapple hiding very little meat, a thumbful of cheese, and barely any sour cream or guacamole (which was made to look much larger by the mounds of shredded lettuce under it.) My companion's chicken fajitas were so salty that everyone at the table who tried them choked.
I've read a lot about how Polvo's is "old South Austin", etc. etc. I've lived in this city my entire life and mediocre food and poor service aren't Austin. Don't be fooled. Spend your money somewhere worthwhile. Go to Guero's, or Maudies, or any of the other many fine Tex-Mex restaurants in this city. This Austinite won't be going back ever. And if you're not going to listen to me, read the other bad reviews.
Pros: none
Cons: worst service ever, mediocre food

and that old South Austin vibe, this is the place. Dive-y, eclectic atmosphere with friendly staff, and authentic, interior Mexico food. Just their bowl of black beans is awesome, never mind the chile relleno, ridiculously cheap breakfast and yummy shrimp diablo. I'm starting to slobber just thinking about it.
Pros: Relaxing atmosphere with great food
Cons: Everyone's discovered the place!
