Mother's is one of Austin's oldest vegetarian restaurants. The menu is heavy on the dairy, i.e. not particularly healthy if you're not careful about your choice, but there are vegan choices as well, and the food is quite tasty providing the service is good the day you go. The staff at Mother's is always pleasant, don't get me wrong, they're just often a bit... lackadaisical. Food may arrive late and lukewarm because the waiter was chatting with the hostess for a half hour, for example. The vegetarian lasagna is incredibly tasty. When it's hot...
The garden really is something else though.

Mothers Cafe & Garden is a pretty cafe with a pretty attached garden and patio, with an all vegetarian menu. On occasion, I've had some dishes that really seemed like they needed more spices and were a bit bland - I think their menu could use a shot of creativity. But overall, their food is nutritous, and very satisfying. Their waitstaff is laid back but helpful.

Mother’s is a vegetarian haven in Austin. They have good food, often live music, although the service is usually not that great. I love that there is a place you can take out of town visitors to give them a taste of Austin and that it is vegetarian friendly. Truly a great restaurant.

Mother's is the best vegetarian restaurant in Austin. Their enchiladas are good but the lasagna is awesome! Their desserts really aren't all that great. The service is spotty, occasionally you'll get a really attentive waitress, although you're ususally just somewhat ignored... They often have live music which usually consists of some guy playing the guitar or harp. They have some good things and some not so good menu items.

Mothers Cafe, a vegetarian restaurant in Hyde Park has this cool indoor garden with regular seating. They often have easy listening/new age/harp-playing musicians in the garden area. All the plants and the little pond make for a delightful environment. Best things about Mother's: soups, salsa, and no animals killed to prepare your meal.

OK, I used to be a vegetarian (and couldn't afford to go here). I'm not a vegetarian any more, but the lasagna here is sooo good it's worth coming in for.
The atmosphere is interesting. The place is dripping in plants (I don't know that I'd take your aunt and uncle from the Midwest here to impress them). These guys were making smoothies when smoothies weren't cool (and they're still the best).
The desserts....well, I tried one once. I don't bother to save room any more.

I love Mother's Cafe! The food they serve is so healthy. I am always fascinated by how they can make ordinary vegetables and soy taste so amazingly great. I love everything on their menu. They also serve great fresh orange juice. I would recommend eating in their garden. This is a great place for lunch.

.. and they might like it, even if they are meat-lovers! This place has the best salad ever. Their salad dressing could seriously be addictive.. it's so good. First timers should try the lasagna or the whole wheat tacos. As I recall, the cheesecake is excellent, too. Service is good.. eating in the outdoor garden is very nice.

Mother's is a great find for all of those out there that have forfeited meat from their diets. Mother's has a great selection of appetizers and entrees that will please even the pickiest appetites. My favorite is the veggie enchiladas, and the portabello mushroom burger. The salads are great, very fresh, and full of flavor. What I like best about Mother's is the garden room, with all of the foliage and the trickling of the koi pond. The prices are also great, you can get a nice meal for alot less than you'd pay elsewhere. So, if you like your veggies, then Mother's is the place to eat!
