Barton Springs Pool is located in Zilker Park, right down from some awesome restaurants and Peter Pan Mini Golf. The parking fills up pretty quick, and they charge for parking on the weekends, but the pool is worth it. The pool stays at 68 degrees year round, and is 3 acres in size. Bring a snorkel to look at the spring fed bottom and look out for the endangered salamander.

Zilker park is by far the best park in Austin. There is always tons of events going on, especially on weekends. Their botanical gardens are phenomenal. I also like their plant sales which they hold several times per year. This park is a great place to go for a picnic, or to take the dogs. Truly the best park in Austin.

I wish that I lived closer to the Zilker Park area so that I could visit more often. The Zilker Park Botanical Garden is so beautiful that my my husband and I almost got married in the Rose Garden there. If it hadn't been for the hot August summers and those pesky bumble bees! I was so impressed with the care of the grounds and garden. The stafff are so nice and it is obvious they take great pride in the appearance of the entire area. The center also lends their buildings to classes. I took a class there about Butterflies that was very enjoyable several years ago. It is definitely a must see if you are visiting the Austin area.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve has been around since the early 1970’s and was founded to protect endangered species and hundreds of native plants, animals and birds in the Hill Country. There is over 200 acres of wilderness and beauty and visitors can hike over 2 miles of the trails. Great quiet place to get away from the city, house and telephones! It’s just beautiful and a great learning experience for the kids! Don’t forget the camera! Oh, yeah, it's free! They do accept donations.

Hamilton Pool is the most beautiful swimming hole I've come across in the Austin area. It is a county park, so admission is $8/day, but it is so worth it! The pool is surrounded by a tall natural rock wall full of romantic waterfalls. If you don't feel like swimming, there are also some beautiful hiking trails around. But go early! Admission is limited to a certain number. It makes the environment great, but if you come when the park is at capacity, they only let cars in as others exit.

When I first heard about this place, I couldn't understand what was so great about a paved circular path. But once you arrive here, you realize it's benefits. You can ride your bike or rollerblade only with other bikers and rollerbladers! There's no walkers, no dogs, no cars, and the pavement is in great shape. There are no cracks, you get your fair share of uphill and downhill stretches, and there is one quite challenging climb on one end. So put on your helmut and get out here. It's the best place to exercise on wheels in all of Austin. Oh, and did I mention it's completely free?
