Central Market would definitely make my list of the top 5 things I would miss if I left Austin.
CM excels at making grocery shopping an enjoyable and educational outing rather than a weekly chore. I always try to leave plenty of time to wander the departments and try the cooking samples and check out all the fresh foods to inspire the week's recipes.
What's great is that Central Market isn't really even more expensive than HEB or your regular grocery store and we usually SAVE money due to the fact that we can buy just the amount of herbs/grains/spices we need, like a small 5¢ baggy of curry powder or $1 worth of sugar. And the regular grocery section, while focused on Organics and natural foods, does carry enough national brands and "regular" foods that you won't need to make another trip to a traditional grocery store.
The staff is friendly as hell and very helpful when you ask their advice. The seafood guys routinely throw in some disposable gloves so my girlfriend can devein the shrimp. And once when having a wine party, the wine staff recognized our invitations in the guests hands while shopping and recommended different wines for people to bring that evening!
I'm also conviced the coffee is among the best in Austin (I can never seem to replicate the magical ratio they have in their sampler coffee pots) with selection that's unmatched anywhere else in town.
What's more, the cafe is icing on the whole deal... Great tasty food and we'll routinely eat dinner there before shopping so we don't buy the store on an empty stomach.
Even though I can walk to the new flashy Whole Foods downtown and buy $6 tomatoes, I'll make the extra effort to go to CM for the week's shopping. It's selection is more mainstream, the staff down to earth, and the prices more in line with my five-figure income.

This is another great asian supermarket, located at the corner of 183 and lamar. Great place to buy all kinds of chinese groceries, including rice and fresh vegetables that you usually will not find at your neighborhood grocery store. During the times I have gone, the people there have been friendly and helpful. I am very pleased with their produce as well, very fresh and well kept. Great grocery store overall.

I came here out of chance. I was needing to buy some Vegetarian Gravy for a guest that was coming over for Thanksgiving & Central Market was just way too crowded. So, I ventured in here. I had no problem parking, which I was immediately grateful for! People were outside on the patio enjoying a rather divine looking lunch. Inside, the staff was EXTREMELY nice and helpful. After finding the gravy (which was super cheap at only .99, and I know I would have paid a few dollars at Central Market), I looked at their produce selection, and it was just awesome! I will definitely shop here more often!

One to make correction on the earlier post by Amanda. It is not the World Market she may be thinking about (The one near lakeline mall). This is a different place and their ain't any wine or furniture here... promise!
Regardless, its a nice and small place at Lamar & Rutland and has nice collection of grocery items if you are into exotice/ethnic cooking and snack. They have a clean meet shop as well.

This is a wonderful place to stop on the way home for groceries without dealing with the nightmares at the larger stores. The vegetables are fresh, there is a huge selection of vitamins and bulk foods, and you'll find plenty of organic food to keep you healthy. It feels like a neighborhood grocer which is something much missed these days.

This is a quality asian food market on lamar and airport. Although prices are not the cheapest in town, they do have a diverse selection. Besides just groceries they also rent out korean films, which I do not know of anywhere else in austin that does. In addition to this, they have a small cafe on the side that sells excellent korean food for $5 a plate (For the most part). Go there to shop, stay to eat =)

This is my personal favorite asian grocery store in austin. Its located off 183 right by din ho and coco's cafe. They have a diverse selection for mostly chinese and vietnamesse groceries. They have fresh vegetables on the right side and a butcher in the back. Because of the lighting, you feel as if this grocery store is slightly dirtier, but i still like it especailly when you go looking for some random chinese sauce. Good prices too.
