I went into RunTex today and was not acknowledged by anyone there. There only appeared to be a small selection of shoes on a wall. There was a lot of other merchandise, but very few actual shoes.
No one approached me and asked if they could help or anything. I do not put up with horrible or nonexistent customer service so I left and will not come back. I've told all of my friends not to bother with them. Just order shoes online where you can get the same amount of customer service--zero.
I wish there was a better alternative in Austin than this establishment.
Pros: I wouldn't know
Cons: Bad service

We too were disappointed with the service at the Gateway store. My wife had heard they were a great place to go for people new to running and jogging. When we arrived, the salesperson, while very knowledgeable about feet and shoes, seemed disinterested in helping her. After finally examining her feet and her stride, he disappeared for 5 minutes to bring back only 1 pair of shoes. Then, another customer came in who needed to be rung up. The salesperson excused himself to do this, but sat at the register talking while we waited for him to come back. As another reviewer suggested, perhaps it would be best to stick to their other store.

This is the largest of the Run Tex stores in Austin and it still out of stock on a very regular basis of the most common sizes of shoes like Asics, Adidas, and New Balance, to name a few. If you want a specific shoe, don't count on finding it here. If, however, you just want to go someplace where you can have your gait evaluated and any shoe that they might have available recommended to you, you will probably be happy with your shopping experience.
Pros: A salesperson will help you the entire time
Cons: It will be difficult to find the shoe you want in your size

My wife is a new runner, so for her birthday I got her a gift certificate to RunTex thinking they could help her pick out a new pair of shoes. With their reputation it seemed like a great idea.
Unfortunately our experince has been terrible. On my wifes first trip, the young man helping her was far more interested in watching the basketball game than helping her. He gave her three pairs to try and did not offer any information on pros, cons etc. She came home with something but felt dissatisfied with the selection. We took the shoes back and tried again.
This time, the baseball game was far more interesting. The gentleman helping her pulled out a pair of Adidas since that is what she had on. Again, no questions about weekly mileage, type of running, running goals etc. She then wanted to go look at clothes. Instead of any of three staff in the store offering to help her pick something out, find sizes, they were more interested in hanging out behind the counter.
We are emailing the management to see if we get a response. If not, we'll be taking the shoes back and getting our money back. One goes to RunTex for the help in picking something out for their running style, and needs. With the help she received, we could do better at the outlet mall where there is no expectation of service.
Perhaps our error was in not going to the Riverside store and trying the Gateway store. It seems to us that if they can't offer the same level of customer service at all stores, then they have to many stores. Another peice of advice is that it might be time to turn the TV off!
Speciality stores like RunTex only have their customer service to make them stand apart. They have not provided even that with this customer. If they do make this right, I will provide a follow up comment.
Pros: Great selection of shoes and accessories
Cons: Experinced terrible customer service to justify their prices

These people know their shoes! Family owned business that really cares. They have all kinds of shoes from your average runner to specialty shoes. They also offer a wide variety of running accessories. I came to them after I just started jogging and needed a more supportive shoe. I talked to someone who actually does shoe reviews for a national magazine and they had a few different recommendations for me. I was able to find one that fit my budget. I am very happy with my purchase and this is the ONLY place anyone should go for their running needs.
PROS: world class help, variety

I trained for a marathon in Austin, and I used to spend every weekend in the store. Anytime I bought shoes in Austin, I bought them from Run Tex. Although sometimes I felt like the shoes were a bit more expensive, they always gave you a discount for bringing in your old shoes. Plus, whenever I tried on a shoe, I always got to talk with someone who knew exactly what I needed, for the shape fo my foot and the way I ran. Which ended up making my long runs a lot easier. So, if you are a runner, I would definitely check them out.
PROS: Great Selection, Knowledgeable staff

These people know their shoes! The prices are a bit higher than some other places but here you are paying for service and selection. If you are not sure which running shoes are best for your feet, they can help. I definitely will pay a premium to ensure that I am wearing the best shoe for my foot type. And they do sell you the best shoe, not always the most expensive shoe. The one they helped me pick out was a shoe in the middle of the price range.
Pros: service, selection

The person who helped me knew everything there is to know about running shoes. I spent a lot of time trying on shoes, but I walked out of there knowing that I had the right pair for my feet.
