The Michael C. Carlos Museum is my favorite museum in Georgia. Located at Emory University, the museum contains treasures from thousands of years gone by and from many areas of the world. My personal favorite sections are the Greek and Roman exhibits and the Egyptian exhibits. But the Asian and Early North American areas are equally well-done. Right now (August 2006) there is a spectacular exhibit going on called "In Stabiana," with wonderful frescoes, mosaics, and more from a recently discovered luxury resort from Ancient Rome on display. Other special exhibits have included the mummy believed to be that of Ramses, which was returned to Italy by the museum. Do not miss the gift shop! Here you can find extremely reasonably priced gift items, for yourself or someone else, such as scarabs from Egypt and handcrafted small bags from Mexico, art cards, jewelry, and many wonderful books. The museum is free, but a $7 donation is requested, and the visit is worth much more than that.

When my son was going through his "Egypt phase," as so many boys do, it seems we went to the Carlos every week. The display of wonders of Ancient Egypt are fabulous but don't let that overshadow the other exhibits - the classical, African and Asian art galleries. Even the building is a gem.

I really enjoy this museum. There is a great permanent collection of Greek, Roman, and ancient Egyptian art and artifacts. There is a real mummy on display! The collection is small, but the museum is free and is well worth it. The traveling collections are always interesting and well worth a trip to Emory. Go and enjoy (and make a donation, too!)

The Michael C. Carlos Museum is one of the treasures of Emory University. It houses a great collection of ancient art and artifacts, and it's free for Emory students, so if you are one, take advantage of it. Occasionally, they receive pieces in exchange with other museums from around the world, so those are the times when it is most popular, but you can go there anytime and it'll be worth your while. They also have a cafe upstairs which I have never visited, but I heard good things about it.

The collection @ the Carlos museum is focused on Egyptology. The building is designed around it by the famed Michael Graves and it's a fun place to visit. Take the kids, they'll like the mummy. If you can get some of the more gruesome facts about their burial practices to float by their little heads that is! It's not very big, and the cost is a suggested donation, but it is very professional and a good way to while away a rainy afternoon.

The Carlos Museum at Emory University is a great place to learn about the past. Admission is free and it is well worth your time to check it out. It was the place where Tutencamen's tomb was held till they discovered who it really was. It also has many great pieces from the ancient South Asian dynasties like the Muhgals, Khans, and so forth.

This museum is on emory's campus, and it used to hold king tut's Sarcophagus. Nowadays it has different exhibits, but due to the small size, it just doesn't have much space or punch. For a time though, the rareity of the Sarcophagus put the carlos museum on the map. Its not worth a visit out of your way, but if you're emory's campus and want to look around, visit, well then its worth it.

This is an amazing museum. Their collection consists of ancient Rome, Greece, Egyptian, African, and American art. They have art, sculptures, mummies, and equipment that were once used many centuries ago. The prices are great, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. This is truly a great experience that everyone near Atlanta should have.
