The Ashland Co-op is home to some of the best organic food in the valley. The produce is always fresh and guarenteed to be 100% organic. The environment on the inside is very welcoming fro a grocery store and it is relatively easy to find what you want. However as with all organic food stores, the cost is much higher than your average run of the mill store. The only other flaw is the parking. There is none.

I love to window shop at Paddington. Right now they have the neatest weathervane. They have other quirky little things in there too. The owners, Pam and Don do quite a bit for local schools and I like that about them (and not just financially I might add-- they are physically there, going on field trips and things like that). So the owners are very good people. Aside from that they have a neat selection of toys there (my kids barely let me glace at anything besides toys, so it is hard to say much about the clothing, cards and other items there) including many make believe and educational toys. I like Paddington Station and think you should visit them.

If my 11 year old has a dollar or two to her name, she is likely to head to the Bead Studio to spend it. They carry all sorts of cool beads in just about any color or style you can think of. I like that this is a "kid-friendly" store in that they seem to treat my daughter with kindness, answer all of her questions and seem happy to see her. They also offer classes (kind of expensive in my opinion, but most seem to come with the supplies needed to create the project) and best of all they have FREE do it youself bead project sheets that you can pick up. Finding anything in Ashland for free is kind of amazing, so I appreciate that about them. It's a good store and you should go visit them for your beading needs.

This store is a nature enthusiast's heaven. They carry field guides for naming animals, toys for kids, telescopes and many other things for the naturally inclined. The environment inside is quite comfortable and is perfectly set up for perusing for cool stuff. THe price are what you would expect for Ashland, a little spendy but fairly reasonable. When I was a kid this was my favorite store and I think any other kids would think the same.

Just writing about it makes me want to walk over for breakfast, but this is a business that is so good that they are only open for breakfast and lunch so I am out of luck today. They make great bread, jam, eggs, potatoes and more. They are always crowded, kind of noisy and have a fun home-like atmosphere. This is a kid friendly place. Expense-wise, not too bad. Our family (2 adults and 2 kids) can eat for about $25 including tip. We really like the owner and the rest of the crew too. This is where we take grandparents when they come visit us.
They've been voted "best breakfast" in best of Ashland several times. A great place.

I hate shopping for clothes and especially loathe looking through racks of things that look exactly the same, like you see at places like Target or Wal-Mart. Shopping at Renaissance Rose is a pleasure though. Here you can find gypsy style skirts and some other unique things.
They always have a fantastic assortment of hats. What color or style would you like? You'll probably find it at the Rose. Prices are fairly good by Ashland standards.
You just have to see this store!

This is my favorite place downtown for special occasions with special people. It is a somewhat small, dark bistro just behind the Shakespeare theaters. The atmosphere is quiet and refined, easily romantic, but also homey. I have often ducked in with a party before a play for soup and salad (rich enough for a meal) and come back again later for midnight creme brulle. The entree list is not extensive, but varies, and each item is carefully planned and executed. The scallops I had last time were the most divine I've had anywhere. I also had a peach martini with a dollop of sherbet from the festive cocktail list, and an almond mousse.

Munchies is one of the places in Ashland where locals frequent. We like them because you can get a big breakfast (eggs, awesome potatoes, home baked toast) for under $5, they have a good kids menu for about $4 a kid and that comes with a drink, and they give free soda refills (Brothers, please take note here!) Breakfast is served all day, so our family of 5 (one small baby) can eat for about $25 including a tip. When we splurge, we like to get a slice or two of cake (HUGE portions, really tasty), but expensive at almost $5 a slice. They also have a good Mexican menu. Love their enchiladas. Munchies is great!

Ashland has many used book stores but when you think of "new books" only one business comes to my mind-- Bloomsbury! I like that employees review books, many of their current and former staff are writers themselves (and interesting people). The selection is very good.
But let's get to what makes this bookstore really stand out. The cat! When you walk in one of the first things you'll notice is a sign on the door asking you to please be careful not to let the cat out. I like this in a bookstore...
You can go upstairs and have a cup of coffee or sit in a corner and read and it feels like home.
