a few days ago i went to rei and I could not decide what type of sleeping bag to get. It was kind of busy and every sales man was busy except the person stocking the area, he spent a great deal of time with me deciding on a sleeping bag, i did not feel presured to buy something i wasnt comfortable with nor did he bug me to buy a membership and the fact that he spent some time helping me really helped alot thank you mark c.

It is possible to get a better price, but trying to save a very small amount of money you risk getting poor quality products. I have been buying climbing gear from REI for over 10 years and they only carry the best quality brands at good prices. The winter clothing they have is great. Everything properly rated and lasts all day. When you are getting ready for your outdoor adventure REI is really a one stop shop. Warning: the Sports Chalet in La Canada has a bigger climbing gear selection, but most of the expanded selection is of lower rated slings and protection. The inexpensive gear is only rated for top roping, not lead climbing. If you want to purchase skis or a snowboard you have to order if for pick up at this location (Arcadia).

I took my daughter's hiking backpack to REI because I had removed the metal stays before washing it and couldn't manage to get them back in. It was very difficult because the rubber cap on the end of one of the stays had become lodged inside the webbing. Anyway, Ben spent a great deal of time putting the stays back and even used needle-nosed pliers to get the rubber piece out. Also, the store has repeatedly contacted other stores for me to place items on hold (such as the Muir Woods jackets for my husband, daughter and myself that we needed for our England trip in April) if our size wasn't in stock. PROS: Friendly, helpful staff and excellent selection of travel and camping equip CONS: expensive

As good as all REI stores but a bit small so the selection is not as good. Also seems a little harder to get help here than other REI stores I have been to. If you can find the time to go to another REI store in LA, I would suggest going there. Unless you are looking for hiking or biking gear, and you don't want to head to LA, try going to Chick's sporting goods.
