What the story doesnt say (but mis-suggests by the posed, smiling picture) is that these are happy, nice and pleasant people.
Actually they are nasty and cantankerous people! They do not care about their customers, only themselves. I presume that they are very angry about their business not doing well lately and they lash out at people as a result. Recently, Cynthia Shevel told me I cant be bothered when I asked about exchanging a gift t shirt that did not fit for one that did fit.
Fine, certainly she can decline an exchange but being bitter, rude and communicating utter distain for having her time wasted is completely unacceptable.
If you ask the manager Hope to intervene her response is to interrogate you about why you should not be presumed to be a liar (ie. How do we know you didnt buy them elsewhere or wear them and you were NOT told you could return them by the person who bought the gift from us).
Anyway, later that day I saw an add for the Movie about the kidnapping and beheading of Daniel Pearl. It reminded me of those women when thinking about how callous people can be towards one another and selfish. I can only hope that new endeavors for these women bring them the happiness they apparently do not presently have the with closing of Middle Earth (or its downsizing).
Incidently, Elane and Cyndy have a really cool Peewee herman doll in their home. I hope he is never kidnapped and behead like Daniel Pearl was because that would be really mean.

Pros: anyone else waiting on you besides manager or owner
Cons: The owner and her manager

During my undergrad years, I think I bought nearly every birthday present at Middle Earth. They have such a great mix of jewelry, picture frames, bath stuff, classic toys and great cards. They do carry novelty gifts (whoopee cushions and other gag gifts), as well. They also have a large section of Mexican Day of the Dead art.

Middle Earth has been a major anchor for the S. University area for ... eons. Part of its enduring appeal is its ability to attract so many different kinds of buyers; one main area focuses on jewelry, while novelty toys (they always seem to be the first to pick up on gonzo trends like boxing nun dolls) and gags appeal to others. They carry fantasy related merchandise, such as intricate castle models, as well as counter-culture material for '60s relics. A major drawback is that they have never been particularly affordable. You'll pay about as much for this merchandise as if you were buying it in Santa Monica or New York City, if not more. On the other hand, even a seasoned urbanite would have trouble finding all this stuff in one place - particularly their huge T-shirt selection. You may be shocked, as I was once, to find that this selection generally beats stores in much bigger cities and markets.

Step back into the 60's when you visit Middle Earth. If you are looking for incense, t-shirts and beads, look no further. This shop is filled with all sorts of unusual items and would be a great place to search for unique gifts. The staff is mostly comprised of students so do not expect superior customer service. Parking is also limited due to its location in downtown Ann Arbor.

This is a favorite for all Ann Arbor people. Store has lots of neat items like toys, candy, jewelry, cards to send to a friend, etc. This place has a huge inventory and prices are very reasonable since there main consumers are college students who tend to not have lots of money. The staff is very helpful when you need them. Place to go for a fun shopping experience!!!
PROS: Variety, Prices, Helpful staff

Middle Earth has everything you need if you need to give a gift for someone special. They have everything from rediculous t-shirts to ethnic crafts. There is a large greeting card and post card selection...and they also have a variety of jewelry and small purses. I particularly like many of the crafts and goods that are imported from other countries (like India and countries in Africa). They also have cute packaging items like cute gift bags and wrapping paper.

This place does have alot of neat things, but Im afraid most of their items are a bit overpriced. The side of the store with t-shirts and novelty items are more appropriatly priced.
