Don't get duped 12/7/2011

Our son attended the upper school for three years. His standardized test grades steadily declined while at MSA. We were promised a great education and almost guaranteed college acceptance. As it turned out the promise of individualized teaching is only there for you to sign up. The teachers are not very good let alone being trained to deal with learning disabilities. Most of the teachers seem to be disorganized and not at all sympathetic to the children's needs. My son is bright and had good grades in middle school, but is forgetful and has trouble with writing. I could never get any of the teachers to write down his assignments or give handouts. He was constantly punished for forgetting to turn in assignments that he had done. We were very frustrated with this school and the constant demand for more money. Constant fund raising. The other frustration was the number of days your kid has no school and you need to stay home. This is very hard on a working parent. On semester finals kids are let out at 10:30 am, and you need to be there the entire week to pick up your kid at school. They don't even offer to bus your kid to the pick up place. We gave MSA every opportunity to deliver a good education for our son and they failed miserably. He is back in public school and needs to make up a year because of poor teaching in Mill Springs. more

Academic Nightmare 1/28/2010

My child has mild learning disabilities and we were at Mill Springs until recently. They do not live up to their motto of teaching to the individual child and certainly don't help children academically. If anything, my child regressed in all subjects due to the academics. They don't challenge the children, they dumb them down. On top of that, I've never seen such a greedy school with poorly paid teachers. Every event, whether school plays or sporting events, the headmaster is asking for more money. $20K over a couple of years is a lot of money to spend to make a child worse off than if they went to a GA public school. more

Not Having Problems With Mill Springs 11/18/2009

The headmaster has addressed the problems we were having at the school. My perception of the school has changed 180 degrees. I regret my previous review which was written out of great frustration. The headmaster has worked out an action plan for our dyslexic son with his principal. Things are looking very positive now and we are assuming that MSA will deliver on its promise of helping learning disabled kids. The headmaster understands, and I think, is genuinely committed to providing for the needs of these children. He has convinced us that we are in the right school and they will get us on the right path. more

Having Problems With Mill Springs 11/6/2009

My dyslexic son is in 7th grade at MSA. He previously spent 3 years at the Swift School. Two of his four MSA teachers for sure lack any training or understanding of how to teach a dyslexic child. The math teacher is a bright young (inexperienced) man with a booming voice who intimidates my son and uses math terms that no dyslexic child is going to be comfortable with. We expect to work with our child on homework but 2 - 3 hours most nights is exhausting. The so-called 'levels system' and 'values' education seems to be emphasized at the cost of genuine teaching techniques for learning disabled kids. The pre-upper school seems to have a 'sink or swim' attitude in that while they do provide good resources for the students, they expect the student to have the maturity, judgment, and experience to know how to take advantage of these things. My son is bright and capable but he is not ready for that kind of responsibility; I doubt many 13 year olds are. The school mottto is something like 'we'll teach the student the way he needs if he can't learn the way we're teaching. This is a joke, if not down right fraudulent. At $20,000+ per year, MSA does not deliver, and should not pretend that it caters to the learning disabled. more

A lifesaver for our family 7/13/2005

We realized our son suffers from ADHD in first grade in a public school. After a TERRIBLE experience there, we withdrew him and put him in Mill Springs for the next 3 years. Those 3 years have made all the difference in his life and our familys'. They are very knowledgable, patient, and WORK WITH YOU and your child to find what works for each child. It is expensive, but worth every penny. You can't put a price on your child's future! more
