I always enjoyed going here after bowling at Albany Lanes. It is good filling burgers that are made what ever way you want. It goes well with fries and is a guilty pleasure.

Don't waste your money on another Burger King or In-N-Out go some place memorable and different. That's Al's Big Burger. The Malts, Fried Zucchini, tasty variations on burgers... COME ON! Maybe it won't alter your preception of reality but it will definitely give you a little extra drive to check out small burger stands more often.
Google my blog "freaking delicious" to find a little video I put together on the place. It will show you the joint, the food, and give you a little inside info.
Pros: Burgers, Local, Tasty, Fun
Cons: Not home made fries and the like.

I've been going to Al's since I moved to the greater Bay Area, and have never encountered a better burger. Period. The folks at this tiny stand have narrowed the humble burger to what it really should be. They need no gimmicks, and while their selection may seem a little limited compared to the upscale places like Barney's, this allows them to focus on what they do best. That said, if a true burger isn't really what you're craving, or if you want a little more, they've got it for you. Huge, thick shakes, mozzarella sticks, fries galore, and a fantastic charcoal grill right in front of you, so you know exactly what happens to your food, start to finish. Their standard is a 1/3 pounder, in my opinion the perfect patty, but they'll do double that or half that much, with fresh fixin's and a perfectly toasted bun. Their prices are phenomenal. A $10 bill should deal with any appetite. If you get the chance, drop in and chow down, you won't be disappointed.
Pros: Quality, Price,
Cons: Seating

I won't be going back.
My daughter and I walked in at exactly 8pm and the counter person said "Sorry, we can't cook for you." The tables were full of people that were seated and eating; we simply wanted a burger to go. I mentioned that we would not be dining in, that people would probably be seated at the tables long after we left with our to-go food, please could they just fry up a burger really quick? The answer - "sorry, my boss's rules." We had done nothing wrong other than walk in at the exact minute of closing. Customers at their tables and in the parking lot gave us sympathetic looks as if to say "if it was my place I would have made you a quick burger."
Well, FU "Al's". I'm happy to never go there again. Try Oscar's in Berkeley, they respect the customer.
Pros: none
Cons: greasy, ancient, rude

The place has the best burgers I have tried so far in the Bay Area.
It's a couple knotches over Sliders. Much better than Clown Alley, In N Out, and Bistro Burger (Though I enjoy all of these too). And Nation's Giant Burger doesn't even get close to being in the same category.
The burgers are grilled over a flame (as they should be). The prices are that Bay Area Normal $6 average. The fries are pretty good and the Chocolate shakes are great.
Pros: Burgers, Shakes, Very Friendly
Cons: Very little seating, Looks like the place has not been remodeled since opening (1960's?)
