Best

There is nothing better in the summer than a cool beer in the round of friends. I love Zum Schneider for their incredible selection of German beer and tasty food.

Worst

This is a very nice beer hall but with a few problems: crowds, smoke (excessive - even my underwear reeked like an ashtray), and uncomfortable seating/tables. Yeah, yeah, it's so ...

Pestered for a tip 7/14/2011

Sadly, yesterday was my last time visiting Zum Schneider. For good German food, I'll be at Halo Berlin. After a decent Rollbraten for me, and Bratwurst for my friend, but not BEFORE the plates were cleared, our waitress all but demanded we pay the check. We tipped about 15% for our SLOW service (despite the fact that the place was damn near empty) and her hastily requesting the bill be paid. We would have stayed for more beers and conversation had she not. Minutes later, a waiter comes out (not her) and LOUDLY explains that in the United States, 20% tip is customary. (ummm yeah, isn't it also DISCRETIONARY??) We allowed ourselves to be strongarmed into leaving more tip, taking the high road. I did not want to get into an argument with him, or anyone else about the tip, nor embarass ourselves, the waitress, or the other guests debating the service there. I won't be back. Sorry Zum Schneider...I have to agree with the other comments about the staff and service. more

Horrendous service and Disappointing food 6/14/2011

Been here twice. The 1st time I was not pleased with the slow service and how the waitress kept forgetting to refill my water after I'd asked. Had something that I thought would be a meat dish with a salad, but it ended up being a few fatty cuts of meat just sitting on a big bland salad. more

My favorite beer hub in town 9/3/2010

Incompetent Staff 5/28/2010

whatever authentic atmosphere that might have been created by a good selection of beer, dim lighting and semi-communal tables was destroyed by the frat parties at the said tables and the incompetent staff. Pros: beer Cons: frat house atmosphere more

Not Really a Beer Garden 5/26/2010

I'm giving it three stars because I like the overall atmosphere of the bar and especially the beer selection, but let's get real, this is not a beer garden, so I don't know why it's often touted as one. Four tables outside the bar on the sidewalk does not equal a beer garden. This place can get crazy packed, especially during Oktoberfest (obviously), but it's also a really fun place to kick back a few, even if it is out of the way. more

A nice place to hang out 5/5/2010

Absolutely a nice place to go and hang out with friends. Everything is just good there from the food, drinks and service. Must visit place ..... Pros: Ambience Cons: Bit crowded at times more

ZUM SCHNEIDER WHAT A SELECTION 11/30/2009

always my go to place when I have visitors in town. Try to get there early in the summer, since it becomes extremely crowded. The Beer Selection is awesome served in GIANT glasses Pros: Great selection of beer, decent food Cons: no tv, crowded at times more

Too much work to get a table 8/26/2009

I was lured by the thought of belgium beer, long beer tables, and maybe some outdoor seating, but was sadly disappointed when once there. Seating is hard to come by, people come early and stay all night. And to have a seat you have to buy food. There is nowhere to really stand, so if you're not seated you're kind of in the way of the waiters and other patrons who like you did not get there early enough. Pros: Beer Cons: Crowded, no seating more

Where the beer and boys are... 7/27/2009

The equation to what makes Zum Schneider a great bar for the single girl in Manhattan is quite simple. Boys like beer. Zum has a wide menu of German beers that come in huge glasses. Thus boys go here in droves, so you should too to meet said boys. Zum also creates the perfect social atmosphere to meet new people with their traditional beer-garden style community tables. It's almost like they knew exactly what they were doing all along! I'm not the biggest fan of international beers but I can recognize a good beer list when I see it, especially by the looks of joy on the male clientele's faces as they clink their liter sized glasses together in cheer. So I shall grab my own (half) liter glass and join in the festive fun, indulging in as many Wieners as I can handle. I may come for the boys, but you should probably come for the Bavarian tradition and the beer, which are far more noble reasons. Pros: boys, atmosphere more

Great Spot 3/13/2009

The best German food I have had since I was in Munich. The white sausage and the Hofbrau beer were excellent. Have been here several times, going during the day is key as it is typically not as crowded which can be an issue since the place is not that large. But overall the waitstaff was very pleasant and the food was excellent. Pros: Beer, Food Cons: Size more

GO EARLY 10/15/2008

I've read some great things about this place but unfortunately didn't pick up on the fact that you need to get there early (at least on days when they have live music / during Oktoberfest). We arrived around 3pm and were told by some very big bouncers to wait in line -ok, no biggie. The place looked packed and people seemed to be having a great time - huge beer steins, german food, dancing on tables + tuba players! Pros: Great crowd. Fun, authentic atmosphere, live music. Cons: Long wait on busy days, crazy waitress with a whistle and an attitude more

Not very STEUBEN-dous... 9/21/2008

Had long heard favorable word of this place from a hotel colleague of mine (please note that I work in hospitality in Guest Services recommending places to eat, drink and be merry). I went looking forward to post Steuben-Day parade fun with an East Village bent since last year I had gone to the more classic Heidelberg (which was great fun). Pros: Not much outside in this indoor beer garden Cons: Cranky service more

Great place 9/12/2008

Beer selection is awesome, food is really delicious (Schweinshaxe is the best in the city). People are friendly and music is great. I'll keep on coming and bringing more people with me. Pros: Ambience, beer selection Cons: parking could be difficult more

Guten tag! 5/4/2008

I can't speak for the food, but I can speak for the beer! I went to Oktoberfest in Munich (Munchen!) a few years back, and this place brought back some lovely drunken memories. more

Best beer garden in NYC by a mile... 1/11/2008

I live in the east village and was at Zum Schneider the night it opened. Haven't stopped going or taking my friends since. The food and beer selection keep getting better and it's as close to Bavaria as you'll get in NYC. Get there early and be prepared for a fun night of drinking. more

not what it used to be 12/25/2007

this facility has in the last year ceased to provide adequate grounds for successful parchment-creation. one can only hope that sylvester and benjamin will remedy the flounder. more

Fun times and great beer! 12/3/2007

I just had to respond to blondbluey's review below. Wow, were you totally off the mark. Did you not have a clue that on Steuben Day that Zum Schneider would be packed? How long have you lived here? I have gone there many times on normal weekends and on special event days. If you live in the city you have to expect crazy crowds during certain events. Maybe you should go to a small out of the way hotel bar so you can sit alone and have the place all to yourself. Zum Schneider is a great place to enjoy with a crowd, and the owner Sylvester does his best to make things fun. There are not that many German/Bavarian places left in NYC (Zum Schneider, Heildelberg, Lederhosen) so you have to realize how crowded they get. I have always seen a very mixed crowd there too. And I will always go back. Lighten up blondbluey. Pros: Great German beer selection. Good food and brunch selection. Cons: Gets a bit crowded - get there early on weekends. more

IF you like to have fun, DO NOT GO HERE!! 10/1/2007

After living in Munich for 9 months I was eager to get some authentic German cuisine in the big city. While they did have some fantastic beer selection the Germans are a much better people than the clownshoes running this place. Our group was having a fantastic time, laughing, drinking eating and just enjoying the night when it became apparent that this was no place to do such a thing. I was quickly notified that this was in fact not the hofbrahaus. Well no sh1t, but I also didn't think I was boozing at the local barnes and nobles. I was told on numerous occasions that the behavior of our group was unacceptable and might be grounds for dismissal from this establishment. Our behavior consisted of us sitting at our table having dinner and a few laughs. They didn't even have un Becks. My grandfather Ludwig Van Wolfhausen would have been ever so upset with the way these ""German"" waitresses treated their customers. Some friends showed up and started gathering around our table, well to my suprise this wasn't permitted either. I politely asked the young lady why the place was like drinking in a tibetan prison camp. She said that we would get kicked out of any bar for acting the way our group did. Us Germans are a proud people and loud and boisterous just may come with that territory. If you are looking to drink some good beer while reading your favorite book then this just may be the place for you. I beg of you do not go expecting to have fun or you will immediately be ridiculed. more

Es ist wie ein Bierhall auf Munchen! 9/6/2007

We came on this place pretty much by accident, and it turned into one of the most fortunate finds in my city life so far. Granted, I'm a little biased because the six years of German I studied in HS/college have, up to this point, only come in handy when beer is involved. And here, beer is very, very involved. Pros: Presentation, Waitstaff fluent in German, Beer! Cons: We had a somewhat unfriendly waitress more

try some where else 9/4/2007

i ordered a sausage dish and when it came it didnt SMELL rite to me. i told the waitress and she said she would get me another dish but i would have to pay for this dish also. i asked for the owner and a so called manager came. she repeat the same ""you must pay for it anyway"". Cons: poor service more

  • Maybe the East Village didn't need a beer garden, but it certainly wanted one. Seat yourself--a squeeze on weekends--grab a handful of sourdough pretzels and choose from a dozen hard-to-find German...
