Zum's not the coolest, but it's cool. 3/8/2006

The club makes an obvious effort to be cool, and it sort of is. It's a small space, but they somehow cram a lot of gym in there. Full free weight setup, although I was all alone and in someone’s way when I was using them. The facility is setup for "new school" exercises, it's got a sand pit and hanging gymnastics rings, etc. When I look around the trainers also have all their clients doing plyometrics and balance drills for core strength - which are all the fad right now. The spin class was sub par. The instructor was very late, but apparently he's some famous cyclist. The class was called "Riding with Kenny". Kenny needs a watch. The Men's locker room was small, but included a sauna and good size showers. The staff seemed exceptionally nice. Everyone that works there smiles and says hello as if they are trained to do so, which made me feel right at home in my lycra. more

We're Gonna Zum, Zum, Zum-a-Zum 1/5/2006

I took a tour of Club Zum (pronounced Zoom, hence the reference to the PBS children's programming above) a couple of days ago and wow, was I impressed. First of all, I was introduced to just about everyone who works there. Right away, I felt right at home. Second, the place has a cool vibe. There is none of that airplane bathroom lighting or whistle blowing that seem to be the calling card of most gyms. This place has skylights and trainers that speak softly and look you in the eye. And none of the members were prancing around, making small-talk...they were working it, joyfully. more

Joe De Shaw at Zum (Health Club) 9/22/2005

Joe is amazingly caring and knowledgeable. He has an extensive experience in physical therapy. His approach is based on intense listening and observation. He helped me become aware of my body, postures, habits and how to remedy its weaknesses with a focus on strenthening the core, improving basic range of motion and building strength where it is the most needed first to restore balance of the muscle systems. I worked with very decent personal trainers at the Pro Club in Bellevue for years. They never came even close to understanding my body's issues (e.g. why my knees hurt) as deeply as Joe did. Rather than recommending more stretching, which is what everyone else recommended, Joe showed me how some weaker muscle groups were not doing their part, resulting in higher strain on others and creating the pain in the knees. Years of stretching had only made the problem worse. Joe was recently named one of the top five trainers in Seattle and one of the top 100 trainers in the United States (Men's Journal Dec. 2004). You can see his bio at I should also say that he is not cheap. But he helped me design a workout session that i can do on my own (even at home). So i dont need to meet him twice a week as i used to do with my trainer at the Pro Club. He is in high demand so you may have to wait for a while. more

I am so glad that I came across the Zum gym on one of my trips out on the town, I had been looking for a gym to join but hadn't found the right one for me. The personal trainers at Zum are very knowledgeable and always willing to help you out or answer any questions. Convenient location with lots of easy parking. Many unique exercise regimens - including a sand pit. more
