STAY AWAY\r

Last night at Zucca, I had the most unpleasant experience I've ever had in a restaurant. The food was passable (though not at all special), but the proprietor was so sneaky, nasty and insulting that I will never go back there and would absolutely never recommend it to anyone. When I said to my boyfriend that he would not like the ""prosciutto cotto"" that was served with the burrata appetizer, the proprietor (who was taking our order in the nearly empty restaurant) offered to substitute ""prosciutto di parma"" -- never mentioning any additional cost for the substitution -- and we took him up on his offer. When the bill came, however, we saw that ""burrata"" was listed twice, once for $12 (the cost of the appetizer) and once for $8. When we questioned the second charge, the proprietor said that the $8 charge was for the prosciutto di parma, because it costs him more to buy. We were of course surprised, and we objected to not having been told in advance that the substitution would nearly double the price of the app (we would have skipped the meat altogether, had we known), but he disagreed and at that point began to get very unpleasant. Apparently, in his opinion, as ""sophisticated business people"" and ""entrepreneurs"" we should have known the difference in his wholesale prices for Italian meats, and that he planned to pass on that difference in price to us as part of the substitution he offered (even though he didn't say so). He even accused me of trying to ""trick"" him into giving us something for free that we knew we shouldn't get. At that point, I was so shocked and insulted by his behavior that I just wanted to leave, our evening having been ruined, so we paid the check and got out of there, stunned that the proprietor of Zucca would choose to insult and drive away neighborhood customers for $8 on a $90 bill.\r

The Zucca website advertises an ""at home Italian feeling"" -- If this were how I was treated at home, I would move out! In a city where there are thousands of fabulous restaurants to try, there is no reason to go to Zucca and every reason not to. \r

(NOTE: I would give this restaurant zero stars if Citysearch website provided that option.)
Cons: Mediocre food; nasty service
