We went here and had an excellent meal. The atmosphere was good but the food was even better. I highly recommend the lamb tandoori. Delicious!

Good Food, Classy Atmosphere 5/23/2003

I love eating at Breads of India, but it is frequently crowded and noisy, with not much atmosphere. Zaika offers the best of both worlds. The food is every bit as good as at Breads (my Chicken Tandoori dish was identical), but the dining experience is far superior, with a quieter, more relaxed upscale atmosphere. And the prices are only slightly higher. My tandoori dinner with naan and a drink was about $20. Sure, there are fast food Indian cafes with much cheaper food. But the food at Zaika uses freshly prepared, organic ingredients, and the atmosphere is classier. To me, it's worth it. Pros: unique, tasty, organic more

bland, overpriced 4/13/2003

With all the competition of indian food in the area, you would expect to get something extra special considering their prices. Instead, the food is bland, and the staff is curt and shady. All we kept thinking was "for half the price, we could go to Chaat Cafe, get more and much tastier food." with all the elaborate descriptions in the menu, you'd think they were gonna hand you a piece of heaven on a plate. very disappointing. Just go somewhere else and save your money. Pros: decor Cons: bland, overpriced, service more

India has really come to Berkeley 7/30/2002

We have been several times to India and were most pleased to discover this restaurant with a REAL indian taste and not an americanized one! They change their menu pretty often and provide always very precise and interesting information on how dishes are made as well as on their history. The right smell, the right taste: India has really come to Berkeley. Pros: Good food, Authentic food, Friendly staff Cons: Pricy, Rather crowded more

Dread of India! 7/27/2002

Overall, this restaurant gets a poor rating. On my first visit, I had an amazing dinner. Everything was perfect... the food, the service, the ambiance... I raved about it for a week... looking forward to my next visit. On my second visit (which will be my last) everything that could go wrong did. The food was terrible. The funny thing was that prior to my second visit I read the other reviews and was shocked to see that Zaika had received bad ratings... now I understand. The service was also terrible (could be that the first visit was on a Monday and this was a Friday night)... waiting for water was not enjoyable. If you're thinking of trying Zaika I say "Beware!" could be a hit or miss. Another thing, the chairs are uncomfortable... they are missing armrests. Cons: terrible service, food quality more

The Blandest Indian Food I've Ever Eaten 7/23/2002

Zaika has a nice ambiance, and from the luscious menu descriptions, we were expecting a real treat. But once our food came, it was all downhill. The portions were smaller than what I feed my cat, but I'm sure my cat's food is more flavorful. There was absolutely no flavor to the spinach dish we ordered. It tasted like boiled spinach with no salt. The other vegetable curry was scarcely better. Zaika's prices aren't cheap, either. We left feeling hungry and utterly ripped off. With all of the good Indian restaurants in Berkeley, don't waste your time or money at Zaika's. Pros: , ambiance Cons: , food more
