Zachary's is fresh pizza but very bland. I'd put it at the bottom of the list in Chicago. Pizza in Chicago centers on quality and taste to distinguish their pizza as the best. Zachary's has no taste. The sauce is boring and too tomatoe-y. The crust is flaky and dry and tasteless. It fills your stomach, but can't compete in Chicago at all. more

Zachary's = Good Grub! 12/22/2009

Chicago can officially take a hike. You've been outdone. There's no shame in that. You're pizza is good, but Zachary's is amazing. How do they do it? Is it because they're 100% employee owned? Is it because they sprinkle magic deliciousness into the sauce? I don't know, and more importantly, I don't care. Just keep the Spinach and Mushroom stuffed pizza coming my way. Don't like Spinach and mushroom? At age six I wouldn't eat a mushroom dipped in nacho cheese, but I would down this stuff like nobody's business. This is one of those places were you probably never change your order, because it's just too good to experiment with. If the pizza itself wasn't enough to convince yourself, just take a look around the walls at the non-stop reviewers singing its praise. But more importantly, are the super-fan posters that cover the walls. I guess when you're this good, you don't need to invest in art. Don't be afraid of the crowded mess inside, because Zachary's will let you order your food as soon as you put in your name. And that's important, because for safety sake, when you smell that pizza floating around, piled up on bar stools next to people's tables, a riot could break out at any moment. This is the kind of place you order a large, knowing you can only stomach half, but the cold leftovers are an art unto itself. With the delicious flaky crust, toppings dancing with the cheese stuffed (most importantly) inside, and topped off with rich piles of chunky tomatoes, you'll never forgive yourself that you didn't go sooner. So grab a slice, dive in with a fork and knife, or pick it straight up if you're brave, and your belly will reach Good Grub euphoria before you know it. best chicago pizza! 4/5/2007

I went to visit my friend in Berkeley and asked her to take me to the best pizza place in town, and she brought me to Zachary's. And must I say, I was not disappointed! I'm more of a New York Pizza fan, but this place had amazing deep-dish pizza with a lot of tomato sauce! The Chicken Pizza and Spinach & Mushroom (both under Zachary's ""favorites"") were absolutely delicious! Although it was pretty packed (It was a Friday night), they had a very efficient waiting system where we would order the food while we were waiting so the pizza can come out right when we sat down! Pros: delicious deep-dish/stuffed pizza, fast-as-possible service more

The best pizza you will ever eat 1/6/2007

They serve regular thin-crust, but you'd be a fool not to get the deep-dish. Best tomato sauce anywhere, delicious cheese, tons of toppings to chose from, but even plain old cheese is hardly ""plain."" There can be a long wait on weekend nights, but the place is fun and the servers are good, and its worth the wait every time once you tuck in. Calling ahead is probably a good idea on weekends. This place has been Zagat rated since the early nineties. You can even buy half-baked pizzas to take home. Probably not good for parties over 4; the place isn't super-small, but it's not big either. Personally, this is the best pizza I've ever had, well-worth a drive from Marin. more

Hot, Gooey Deep Dish Pizza 11/21/2006

This place is hopping. Very, very busy. Call ahead if you want take-out. The crust is good, the tomato sauce is excellent, and everything is good. The deep dish pizza is very gooey and rich. Pesto is especially recommended. A high -quality pizza product, much better than a chain. Pros: Excellent, fresh-tasting pizza. Cons: Long wait at times more

Great Chicago style pizza! MMMM... 11/14/2006

Okay. So Zachary's has got some amazing pizzas. Although they are still the best around, they haven't been as consistent as they use to be. Don't get me wrong though. When I want deep dish pizza, I always come here. I think they are way too busy and they have been rushing lately. Otherwise, I love this place. \r It is extremely crowded almost everynight so you'll have to wait for a seat! Pros: PIZZA Cons: crowded, long wait to get your pizza (but worth it) more

Not really Chicago style, but still good... 10/31/2006

Yes, the secret is true. Zachary's isn't really Chicago style. But who doesn't like the deep dish here though anyway? A slice is a meal in itself. The crust could use a little more flavor, but it's not horrible. Don't get the thin crust, there's no point really. Wish they delivered, or at least could speed things up a little... more

A new review on an old favorite 9/22/2006

I've been getting Zachary's pizza's to go for years. The deep dish isn't something you can really call pizza -- it's a thick, hefty two and a half inch thick pie. One slice will slow you down for the evening. Yes, sometimes the fillings can be a bit hard to detect, because there's just so much dough and cheese and tomatoes and... well, even so, it's very, very good. But it's not a California pizza, and it's not exactly a Chicago deep dish. We order two with regularity: the whole wheat crust with chicken, pesto, and basil and the regular crust with ham, spinach and mushroom. I can't exactly describe why they're so good, but they are. A bit on the spendy side, though one large deep dish will easily feed three hungry people. The thin crust, available by the slice as well, are absolutely excellent. the slices are New York sized -- large enough to fill my 20 year old for lunch. Zachary's has become quite a local tradition, and it's not the best pizza I've had, but it's a mighty fine food, and definitely, definitely worth trying out. if you don't become a fan, it's no loss, but if you do... you'll be so happy they're serving those 5 pound pies. Pros: Hefty pizza's unlike any other available in the area Cons: hard to park sometimes, very loud ambience, can be considered expensive. more
