WORST food in downtown SLC 1/25/2011

Couldn't find a way to enter less than 1 star! If you want enchiladas, fajitas, maybe anything else .... DON'T GO to Ztejas in the Gateway! I've eaten a lot of enchiladas - some fabulous, some ok - but any chef should know what enchiladas are ... & they are NOT 3 flat tortillas with the poorest quality (dark meat only) bits of chicken (maybe enough to fill one enchilada - no more) almost hidden underneath the 3 flat tortillas & covered with what tasted like canned enchilada sauce. Well, actually I've had better canned enchilada sauce. The fajita meat - also substandard - was in a sauce thickened with corn starch or who knows what - as if a thick sauce was going to add some flavor - which should've come from appropriately-prepared fajita meat. When questioned about the quality, the waiter only defended the dishes. He insincerely asked if we'd like something else & walked off without suggesting anything & before we could even respond. Shame on you, D. You might could've helped - although I don't know if there is any good food to be had at this very slightly attended (at the most popular dinner time) establishment. Customers need to be forewarned - wish we had been! more

Good Food 6/25/2009

The blackened fish tacos are great! Good place to eat. Pros: Food more

Great restaurant in the Gateway Plaza 6/21/2009

Good fun place. Spicy Tex-Mex type food and conveniently located in the Gateway. Good food, good prices, good service. They also validate for Gateway parking. Give it a try Pros: Relaxed atmosphere and good food, reasonable prices more

Consistenly excellent!! 1/10/2009

We love Z'Tejas! The food is consistently excellent with wonderful flavors. While we have favorites...the steak burrito, the chicken avocado sandwich (get it with extra jalapeno mayo), the miso salmon (what a kick to that one!), we try new things all of the time. The 6th Street margarita is their best frozen or on the rocks. If you want excellent service request Cherie, Jess, Matthew or Richard as your server. They seem to have a turnover in hostesses, but there is a really tall, attractive girl with brown hair who really knows what's she's doing. Get her to help you. It can be romantic and is good for kids, which seems like a contradiction! And people who take a million kids...do us all a favor and make them behave and be quiet so your table doesn't disturb the rest of the patrons paying for a nice meal out. Pros: Everyting Cons: Turnover in hostesses...people who don't control their kids (not Z'Tejas's fault though) more

no hot water in the bathrooms 10/3/2008

We went for dinner tonight, ordered a drink and went to the restroom where there was no hot water to wash my hands. I spoke to the manager who said they sometimes have a problem with the hot water getting all the way back to the restrooms and staying hot on a busy night??? We decided not to eat here. Pros: good drink more

Mediocre 5/19/2008

I wasn't too impressed with the service nor the food to be honest. The hostess at the front just stared at us when we walked in and it was only after we told her we had 3 in our party that she said or did anything to help us out. (And it's not like it was crowded- it was around 4:30pm and there were plenty of tables inside.) After being seated next to a large party we asked to be moved but that hostess wasn't sure we could move just one table over because she didn't know if anyone was serving that table. She found out there was a waiter/waitress assigned to it so she moved us. Our waitress was not enthusiastic at all. She visited our table regularly enough but something was off in her attitude. Now to the food itself: the corn bread might be homemade and gets points for authenticity but someone left out the flavor! It was moist enough but flavorless. The Chicken Avocado Sandwich I got was really good but not worth what they charged- I've gotten the same dish at other restaurants and it's been cheaper. My husband got the Achiote-Chicken Fajita-like dish and wasn't impressed with that either. The tortillas were the size of your palm and you only get 3. The blacks beans were cold but they did give a lot of guacamole. But no cheese. Overall, we don't plan on going back just because we weren't really impressed with any facet of the place. Pros: Lots of avocado and guacamole, prompt refills on the water Cons: tables are set too close to one another, unenthusiastic service, a little pricey for amounts more

Tons of flavor 1/28/2008

I've been dining at Z'Tejas for sometime now because my office is pretty close. I was shocked to see some of the comments about the food being bland. I don't know what these people ate but it not the food I eat there. let me give two great examples of food with a lot of flavor - Z'Tejas by far has the most flavorable chile relleno out there. i use to always order chile rellenos at Mexican restaurants, but not anymore because they can't compare to the one at Z'Tejas. It has smoked chicken and a stuffing with apricots, cheese, raisins and some other stuff with a mole sauce over it. It is really good. Also, their NY strip steak is one of the best steaks in town and you don't even come close to paying the price of Flemings. It has a gorgonzola butter on it and carmelized onions. It's another must try. Pros: Good food and service Cons: Gateway can be tough to park more

Z Teja's. Z-licious 1/18/2008

One of my very favorites. I am no fan of the Gateway, but I'm more than willing to brave the dirty, windy walkways & lack of convinient parking for thie delicious Tex-Mex faire of Z Teja's. The atmosphere is nice (if you get a booth it can be quite romantic.... the table area can get a bit crowded.) The service is great, very attentive. I order a different dish every time &, when tasted, swear it's my new favorite. This last time I had the Santa Fe Chicken Enchillada. Yum! The flavor was perfect; spicy, but subtle. Excellent. I'm quite picky.... My orders are always difficult & (when dinning elsewhere) I frequently have to send my dish back to be re-done. Not so at Z Teja's. Each order is presented with perfection..... & in a timely manner. Double plus! :) Pros: Excellent food. Attentive service. Good value Cons: Terrible parking..... It's in the Gateway.... more

Where's the Flavor? 12/4/2007

I had super high hopes for Z'Tejas, but left completely dissappointed. Rarely do I leave a restaurant without finishing my meal, but left well over half of my meal on the plate. Somebody needs to give the Chef a box of kosher salt for Christmas, cause I think he ran out. None of the food had ANY hint of salt and was EXTREMELY bland. I will never eat here again and will only recommend this restaurant for those who are on a low sodium diet. Go to Thaifoon if you are looking for a good meal at the Gateway. more

takes me back to Austin...yum! 11/2/2006

The original is in my former hometown of Austin, TX. It is the only place I can find in SLC that is anywhere near the delicious TexMex that I miss so much. Their queso and guacamole are delicious. Entrees are amazing. Their salsa is good but could be much hotter :) Service was superb. I will go back here whenever I get homesick. Check it out! more

Great Margaritas (for Utah) 6/19/2006

I agree with some of the other reviewers - the service is pretty good here, but it's still a restaurant in a mall. It looks, feels and tastes like a chain restaurant you would find in a mall. If that's what you're looking for, this is the place for you! Pros: Good margaritas. Cons: Chain restaurant in a shopping mall. more

Pleasant, but average. 2/4/2006

We had just walked about 200 yards in the wind and rain to find out that the sushi restaurant we had heard so much about was packed, with a 1.5 hour wait for a table. So, right across the way we spotted ZTejas. The fairly accurate prediction of a 20 minute wait by the host lifted our very cold, damp spirits. Our waiter, Jeremy, was just about perfect. Even his socially acceptable bantor was well timed. Touche' Jeremy! I recommend this restaurant on its service alone. The food, although prompt and well prepared, was rather bland. Even the ""salsa"" was so mild and sweet, it tasted more like tomato jelly with cilantro than salsa. Bottom line, the food was average. Not something I expected from such a limited menu with supposed specialties. Recommend they invest some time and money ""spicing-up"" the menu and giving Jeremy a raise. Pros: service, value Cons: bland food, bland food, bland food more

Perfect for a pre-Delta Center meal 2/26/2005

Nice interior, tables aren't to close together. We received very good service and the food was fresh, hot and yummy. My husband loved the dumpling appetizer, I didn't so much but I don't like pork sausage. He had Jambalaya and loved it. It was packed with chicken, sausage and shrimp. I had Crab Stuffed Chicken and it was really good too. Served w/excellent vegis and rice. We can't wait to go back and try something else. It's just a short walk over to the Delta Center. We had a wonderful evening. Pros: Great food, Great margarita more

Super Southwestern 2/9/2005

Date of visit: 2/5/2005 @ 7pm. Wait was about 40 mins. I had the gumbo and jumbalaya. The gumbo was a tad cool but tasted great. Z'Tejas didn't skimp on the portions of meat and chicken in the soup. The jumbalaya was superb. It had just the right amount of spiciness. There were hearty portions of chicken and sausage and the whole entree tasted fresh. My wife had the miso salmon. The salmon was flaky and tasted very fresh. The miso sauce was a nice accompanyment to the fist--not over-powering or distracting. Our server was a little slow on refilling our water but outside of that the visit was great. Pros: menu selection, prices, cornbread Cons: long wait, noisy, crowded more

I'd rather eat here than at Happy Sumo 3/31/2004

We were stuck waiting for Happy Sumo, with very little chance of ever getting in, so we decided to go across the way to Z Tejas. We were seated right away, no wait, and our server got our drinks right away. I was a little shocked that my martini was $7.50 for such a small serving, but the martini was good. Maybe I should have tried one of their regular cocktails which are cheaper. The cornbread was soooo good, and we'd barely started on our chips and dip when our entrees were served. From what I read in other people's reviews, maybe we just lucked out, but we were starving and Z'Tejas fulfilled our hunger pains right away. Pros: Good food, Fast Seating, Fast Service more

Stranded 9/19/2003

So, we were promptly seated. Never mind it took out waiter at least 10 minutes to come out. He offered a lame excuse, ""They sent me looking for change."" Like we cared. So, ready to order and he was semi-helpful. The food was excellent and a good value for the buck. Although, the inattentive waiter didn't bother with a special request. Where was he when our drinks ran dry? Never offered a box for some excellent take home treats. And, just about had to get up to run my own credit card. We'll be back because the food was great; service sucked! Pros: Excellent Food, Value, Ambience Cons: Service, Limited Selection, Shane more

margaritas 8/6/2003

By far the best margarita Utah has to offer. Tasty and within the legal confines of utahs screwed up liquor laws. Pros: inexpensive, great service, fun Cons: location, music more

Wow and I mean it 7/8/2003

My husband and I have now gone here a few times and both was a extrodinary experience. I highly recommend going outside of the ""normal"" tastes and trying either their chicken rellenos or the spinach chicken stack while reading the ingerdients leaves you wondering both are a pleasant blend of flavors. I also recommend there margaritas or flavored lemonades (Try the guava lemonade). The seating leaves something to be desired since it is almost impossible to get a booth and you are always surrounded by kids if you can ignore that it is not so bad. Pros: service, food, wait time Cons: atmosphere, seating more

WoW simply WoW 1/11/2003

i was hooked on the first visit. the service, the food, the value, and the atmosphere wer great. i have found a new favorite resteraunt in the vally. Pros: location, food, service Cons: parking more
