Another success by Tom Douglas. The food is wonderful - no surprise there. The chickpea fries (I know it sounds weird) are not to be missed. They are my favorite thing on the menu. The dip sampler is also a great appetizer and the warm fresh pita is just perfect! Definitely worth a try. Of course, as with all downtown restaurants, parking is tricky. However, the food is worth it. more

An isle of our own 8/18/2005

Lola, with Greek food as interpreted by the masterful Tom Douglas, is an oasis in the middle of the city. I know I can dine there and be transported away. A wide bar, a semi-open kitchen and a hotel lobby mere steps away all contribute to a lively atmosphere. The food is divine - the skewers are perfect - and lunch is a fantastic experience (and a bargain, comparatively). The fried garbanzo beans are little salty morsels which will delight your taste buds; the house-made pita bread is warm and perfectly chewy; the accompanying spreads are piquant, salty, herby; just right (except for the carrot-sumac; ugh). Lola is a place where it's best to let your senses be your guide - glance around, take note of what looks and smells good, and then try it all. more

Lola- the new Tom Douglas restaurant 9/10/2004

Like all of Tom Douglas' restaurants Lola is a winner. A mix of classic and innovative Greek food. The kabobs are good, the starter dips are great, but a bit small, and they have a true Greek salad. If you want to eat in the bar before a movie at Cinerama you can get in and out quickly. more

  • The Scene
    Complementing the mod-flavored decor of the adjoining Andra hotel, the dining room and bar are outfitted with flame-shaped, scarlet-colored light fixtures and parallel lines of high-backed booths. Soaring ceilings, hardwoods and walls of windows, combined with clamoring regulars, make for rather noisy ambience, but well-meaning servers do their best to communicate with diners over the din.

    The Food
    Douglas' version of Greek fare showcases his affection for local ingredients and his talent for creating simple, thoughtful compositions. At lunch, the tender lamb burger with turmeric ketchup and crusty chickpea fries is the best bet. For dinner, it's the roasted red pepper and mint-laced feta spreads, whole roasted rockfish, and beautifully executed kabobs in seafood, lamb and pork variations that do the trick. Skip the overcooked seafood tagine in favor of red wine-braised octopus with pork belly. Desserts are worth the splurge, particularly the miniature cinnamon doughnuts with honey.
