Best

I've lived in NYC for 17 years and have tried many sushi places, from Nobu (I'd put a ""Boo!"" in Nobu) to the local low-end joint. Yama is hands down the best. For a humorous b...

Yama seems to have lost its edge. Multiple cuts of fish lacked any noticeable flavor or edge to them. Though the cuts were huge, who cares when the taste is so unmoving? The tem...

Solid Sushi 5/21/2006

Yama is not the best sushi in New York, but it's amazingly consistent and always verging on excellent. For that alone it's well worth your time and money. They are also very honest when you ask them about how various cuts of fish are on a given day -- they'll let you know when you do or don't want the tuna, which is something I seriously appreciate. more

Good, after all these years 5/14/2006

Yama has remained unwaveringly good throughout the years, make it a sushi option everyone can agree on without much debate. It's situated in the basement of a building and doesn't have much ambiance going for it. While a bit cramped, brightly lit, and sometimes a bit warm, the turnout of the sushi has always been consistently tasty. They have a mix of the standard and the unconventional, which also makes it a good choice to take first-timers, while satisfying connoisseurs of sushi. The sushi is always fresh and the platters are generous, leaving one feeling stuffed by the end. I'd give Yama a fifth star, if only I weren't feeling like a fish myself - a sardine in a can - when I eat there. more

YAMA = Yummy 3/21/2006

I love Yama's traditional style (as opposed to somewhere like Sushi samba) and the pieces are especially on the larger side if you order sashimi. The Chillean Sea bass is an excellent cooked dish there for anyone lookin on the non-raw side of the menu. I enjoyed eating the fancy rolls they have (.....) The best part of my meal is the green tea tempura which is ALWAYS ordered at the end of every meal there for me. It's the perfect combination of sweet pound cake and bitter green tea ice cream and blend of hot and cold. Overall the dining experience always leaves a smile on my face a full belly for the right price. I should note that there are 3 Yama's in NYC and I'd say the most comfy one is on Carmine but the food is arguably better at the Irving location. more

Yama Japanese Restaurant 7/28/2005

Fresh Sushi and Sashimi. Although the wait can be really long, which explains the line out the door at the Irving plaza location. ( there is another location on Houston but I prefer this one) The slices are cut thick and large. Well worth the money since the quantity and quality surpasses most Japanese restaurants. The service can be slow and waiting to get a table can almost make you change your mind about eating there. Once you do get a taste most people get addicted and the wait seems nothing for a piece of Yama. more
