BRUNCH 5/16/2011

We were quoted a price of $30 on the web, as well as the phone. When we arrived the price was now $31. The girl in the front was not very friendly and we were standing right by the desserts and didn't tell us when our name was called. The view was beautiful. The waiter was quick,,,but kept forgetting things. First thing we got was the shrimp,,,it was wonderful. From that point on it went downhill. The scrambled eggs were terribly runny, red potatoes were not cooked well enough. No avocado for the omelette,,,just guacamole,,,,chips were not crunchy,,,stale. The refried beans were really runny also. I must say the desserts were good. The bill came and there was a charge of $2.95 for a diet coke,,,we argued about that one and it was removed from the bill. When we left there was no ""thank you"",,,no ""goodbye"",,,nor ""have a nice day"",,,nothing. We said have a nice day to the two girls,,,,but they said nothing back. This was a belated Mother's Day,,,,it wasn't very nice. Would never go there again.,,,,there are much better restaurants then this one. more

The view and chocolate fountain to die for 9/26/2010

This restaurant has the most romantic and fantastic views. The name is misleading, you think that you will be eating oriental food but there isn't any. The food off the menu is so so, nothing to jump up and down about. The service ok. The hostesses were friendly and well groomed. The buffet is outstanding. Alot of choices. The chocolate fountain is to die for except the cake was very dry that you dip. The fruit was fresh. The champagne outstanding, not sure of the brand and am not a champagne person but theirs is outstanding. Had a special event planned also and the catering person was very friendly and followed through with all the details that I wanted for the event. Parking so so. They share with everyone else so with an event you have to tell your guests to get there early or the parking lot will be full and you won't be able to attend. That is weak there. Over all I would return and enjoy the view... more

The view at Shanghai Red's is amazing and the food is good. 11/2/2009

I've been to Shanghai Red's in Marina before and recently I came here with my family to celebrate my grandma and her twin sister's birthdays. I mostly focused on the crab legs as I usually do :-). They were pretty good but the coffee was a little bit too sweet for my taste. Pros: We spotted some seals in the water! more

Great Buffet 9/22/2009

What a spread. Quite a variety of foods even for a vegetarian. Of course I started with the chocolate mousse cake and champagne. I thoroughly enjoyed the view if the marina and we were surrounded by a younger, professional crowd. Only drawback was the experience was pricey Pros: Champagne Brunch Cons: Price more

Best Sunday Brunch 1/18/2009

Sunday brunch at Shanghai Red's is amazing! It is all you can eat buffet style and I can't think of a food that isn't represented. Unlike many buffets the food is the quality you would expect to be served in a fine restaurant. Champagne is included and the wait staff keeps it flowing! The restaurant is beautiful and has an especially nice view if you sit outside on the water. \r \r It is nice to go for a stroll through ""Fisherman's Village"" after you leave the restaurant. Pros: Great Food, Good Value more

Wedding Reception at Shanghai Red's was stellar - a truly outstanding experience 8/24/2008

We decided on Shanghai Red's for our July wedding reception, and it was one of the best decisions we've made. We booked the Banquet Room & part of the patio for 75 or so guests...and probably every single guest gushed, oooh'd and aaah'd to us about how wonderful and fun it was. My mother cried maybe three times just when she came to tour the place. The service was great, the food was superb, the professionalism of everyone there was impeccable. We're really grateful to these guys for doing such an incredible job on such an important day for us.\r Two stories to make my point. \r 1) In all the craziness, my now-wife/bride realized she wasn't up for eating her chicken - it was great, but she was just too worked up and needed something lighter. So I headed outside to grab her some fruit from the appetizer table. Our host was there and asked how she could help. Probably three minutes later, she (Hengameh) was handing the my wife a plate with a hand-made arrangement of fruit for her. \r 2) I noticed late in the night that a few ""crashers"" had snuck in to dance. I mentioned it to Mitch, the bartender (who was awesome, by the way). Maybe a tenth of a second after I mentioned it to Mitch, he was already on the other side of the bar, in the room, and had somehow made the two girls just vanish completely out of sight, with practically no one noticing. It just really drove home to me that we were well-taken-care of and watched-out-for. I had no doubts that the folks at Shanghai were truly taking care of us, and were really looking out for us.\r Anyway, from the planning & ambience to the food, drinks, setup, breakdown, logistics, planning, and everything else, Shanghai just blew us and our families/friends away. Hengameh, Mitch, the setup manager, the wait staff, and everyone involved were seriously exceptional, went above-and-beyond the call of duty, and helped make one of the most important days of our lives a truly stellar experience. \r Pros: Superb setting, ambiance, people, food, atmosphere - an amazing time more

Nice Buffet, atmosphere 4/16/2008

My fiance and I went for the sunday brunch. We were seated promptly and the waiters were very attentive, making sure that our champagne was always flowing. The food was actually pretty good too, but it doesn't quite match the price tag. I guess you're also paying for the view. Nice place to go if you want to mix things up. Pros: The view, good service Cons: Price more

Shanghai Red's was the PERFECT location for our wedding! 4/4/2008

Last weekend we were married on the beautiful patio of Shanghai Red's Restaurant at sunset. We chose this location because it was right on the water, the food at SR's is delicious, and the sight of the sailboats going by is magical.\r \r SR's is right off the 90 freeway, parking is simple, and free with a SR validation! There are several hotels within just a few miles, which was important because we had many out of town guests.\r \r The entrance of the restaurant is wonderful, with waterfalls and bridges over the ponds that are filled with the largest koi fish I've ever seen! You could feel the romance before even entering the front doors.\r \r The ceremony area was set up beautifully, with every perfect detail. It was a windy afternoon/evening, so SR's staff had several heat lamps distributed to keep our guests warm. The gazebo made a dreamy backdrop for our vows. Following the ceremony, our guests enjoyed beautifully displayed appetizers and they were either served their cocktails or they visited the patio bar. Our 80 guests were then lead into the Southbay room that overlooks the patio/marina, which was elegantly decorated, with a dancefloor in the middle. It looked FANTASTIC!\r \r The catering manager is extremely professional, yet warm and accomodating. I had many detailed requests and she met them all, cheerfully and with a smile. The banquet manager is kind, attentive and works at lightening speed. I am very detail oriented and wanted nothing less than perfection, and they worked diligently to ensure that I was happy.\r \r One of our guests is a wedding coordinator, and she said that she was VERY impressed by the staff and the location. She cannot wait to recommend SR's to her new clients.\r \r We had SUCH a great time, and our guests REALLY HAD FUN!! The majority of folks danced at least a few times...some folks never left the dancefloor! It's too bad we can't have another wedding, because if we could, we would DEFINITELY do it at SR's again! Pros: Food, location, parking, staff, service, prices Cons: Not a good place for young children since it is near the water more

NICE AFTER 4PM ON A WEEKDAY... 11/6/2007

Entering the restaurant you could see that the atmosphere was beyond nice. The Coi Pond along with the bridge leading up to the restaurant was a very nice touch and on that note, you knew it would be expensive. I thought it was well worth the $116 dollars for two people to dine at a restaurant that is considered upscale. The service for me and Roy (my dear friend) was above average. The view overlooking the ocean at sunset was impressively indescribable. The dinner and the drinks were delicious. For Roy and I everything was very pleasing. Again $116 well spent. I've only been there once but I haven't forgotten the first time and the only reason I haven't gone back is because I don't live in that city but when I decide to visit California, hopefully soon, I will be sure to make a stop at Shanghai Red's and hopefully my last experience will trickle down onto the second but I do remember that old saying, ""It's never as good at the first time"". Pros: THE ENTRANCE, FOOD AND VIEW. Cons: NON... AS OF YET. more

Worst service!! 8/2/2007

Please don't go here! It's extremely expensive, for the worst food and service around!\r I love dining out and do ofter, constantly trying new places. We went here on a recommendation of a friend of my husbands. Bad idea!\r We sat down and it took roughly 10-15 min for even a hello. We ordered drinks, after we received, bread, our soup and salad and our appetizer we received our drinks. Roughly 30 min or more before we were even brought a drink! During this time, my husband got up to fill his own water glass twice!\r Then, the salad, omg, the whole thing was brown, we asked them for another, same exact thing when they returned!\r The calamari was really oily, not good at all!\r We finally got our entree, i ordered it medium, it was extremely rare!\r Afterwards, we wanted another drink, couldn't find our waiter, so ended up finally going to the bar ourselves and the bar was out of liquor!!! No Jack, no crown, no maker's mark, nothing!\r We waited another 20 min to get our bill and left!\r Horrible horrible service and the food was gross for $100 tab!\r Ridiculous!!! more

Good for a one time experience, but do we need to repeat it? 6/10/2007

With such a name, wouldn't you think Asian...from some region...like Shanghai maybe?\r \r While the name IS misleading, we were greatly impressed with the ambience, the setting (we have fabulous pictures of the koi fish coming to the surface to greet us ien masse), and the food (overall). However, we're the type of couple who believes in finishing everything on their plates and walking away from the table not feeling uncomfortable or wasting food. Well....these people want you to spend your money without consideration of enjoyment, romance or comfort level.\r \r The quality of food was not bad for the price; the wine list was reasonably priced, but the service took a nose dive from extremely personable and attentive to non-existent when we ordered one appetizer and one entree to share. Never mind that it didn't HAVE to effect his tip....he simply became annoyed with us and only appeared to find out if we wanted desert and to deliver the check after our order was taken. And the desert was lovely.\r \r Honestly, aside from being there with my husband, the best part of the experience was the koi fish and having our photograph taken by a very personable and drunk limo driver. Enjoy it for a one time experience, but think twice before returning. more

Not for Hipsters 3/17/2007

I'll go here when I retire to hang out with people my age. Food was cold. Service is pretty bad too. more

Great for Valentines 1/30/2007

This is a great place for a romantic valentine's dinner. I actually ate here a couple valentines ago but searching for a romantic restaurant for this upcoming valentines made me think of shanghai red's. They had a special valentine menu that had assortment appetizer plate, soup/salade, entree, and dessert! I had the filet mignon and my bf had the ribeye, both were great!!! the appetizer plate and dessert were delicious!!!!!! you might want to sit inside though because the patio gets chili in the evening. View of the marina is great and VERy ROMANTIC. Pros: Ambience, Big Parking lot, delicious food, reasonable prices Cons: patio is cold in evening more

Catering and Reservations Are Terrible! 12/12/2006

I have been a diner with Shanghai Red's for more than 3 years. I've told many people about it and even taken large groups to dine there. I don't know if I'll be doing that again, anytime soon. My department wanted to have its holiday luncheon there and reservations were made and finalized w/a credit card yesterday. A message was left on my phone today saying that I was going to be charged $100 for a ""no-show"" on reservations. The reservation was for later day that week! After being transferred to several different people and a conversation with the catering department I had them to cancel our reservations all together! An establishment of this caliber should have a better system than this. They will lose tons of diners if they keep this type of behavior up. Pros: The food is good. You are lucky if you get a good waiter. You are lucky if you can get reservations without having to talk to 5 different people! Cons: The seating is too close if you are having a large group dining there. more

Romantic Dining 11/10/2006

I went on a date here, and this place was very romantic. It looks out over the Marina, and you can look out and see all the great boats pulling up to the dock. They have nice roomy booths, and a great fireplace. The grounds of the restaurant is nice, and makes you think you have stepped into a small, intimate jungle. The food is good, and the seafood is decent. Pros: atmosphere, romantic more

Beautiful Entrance & Courtyard, View 11/3/2006

Wow, this restaurant sure has a beautiful entrance....you can sit inside (very cozy) or sit in the courtyard or on their deck. I wasn't too impressed with their food. They have a short menu and its on the expensive side. I would suggest eat somewhere else, stop by at this restaurant for the experience and the view and order a nice dessert :) Pros: Location, View, Cozy Cons: Expensive, Short Menu more

only good for the view 9/8/2006

while the entrance to this restaurant makes you think you'll be dining in a nice place, the rest of the facility is on the shabby side. the one good thing about this place is the fact that you're sitting with a nice view of the ocean, and that's where the pleasantries end. we came here last weekend with two other couples and their kids. everything we ordered was pretty bland and mediocre in quality, although the prices weren't that low. the steaks were overcooked and the quality of the meat was pretty low. the waiters kept mixing up our orders and would forget to bring things such as steak sauce and drinks until we were done with our meal; although they were reminded repeatedly. our bill ended up having things we didn;t order on it. ithe charges were taken off after we pointed it out, but at that point so many things had gone wrong that we just wanted to pay the bill, get out and never come there again. maybe the brunch is good there, but the whole experience was so substandard that we'd never want to give it a try. Pros: nice ocean view, outside seating Cons: slow disorderly service, bland overpriced food more

Romantic, oceanside escape 7/27/2006

My boyfriend took me here for one of our first dates. Sheets of rain poured down and trickled off the sides of the windows as we were cozy at our candlelit table hovering over some delicious and beautiful food. Shanghai Reds is a great place - tucked away so that its not crowded, with ample parking, but with an excellent view. The noise level is low, so conversations don't get overwhelmed. Great for anniversaries, special occasions. more

They have DINNER too! 6/14/2006

I actually got married at Shanghai-Red's outside on the patio but have been there several times to eat as well. I love to go during the summer and sit outside to watch the sunset. They have terrific apps, a great wine list and excellent service. The ambiance is QUITE different from their brunch and so is their food. Try the Chicken-it's really quite good! Pros: Great food, service, drinks Cons: Parking & Valet seems to be a pain more
