I went with my daughter looking for the perfect dress. But from the minute the owner introduced himself he asked me if I had been to the store before which I answered no. I wish...

Poorly stated and thought out policy 3/17/2019

Very disappointed in this store when we ordered two dresses online so our daughter could find a prom dress. My wife and daughter didn't notice a "no returns" message on the computer which didn't appear on the bill, and the store is sticking us with an over $500 bill that we can't afford. Other than trying them on once, the dresses and tags are as is. A dress store like this should be more flexible like their competition. I doubt we'll ever shop here again and I recommend you beware of this policy. more

AMAZING customer service!!!! 9/29/2016

I brought my daughter in all the way from Shreveport, La. We were looking for a presentation dress for Homecoming court. The entire store just had this way of making you feel like you are the ONLY customer in the store. Keep in mind this was a Saturday and the store was PACKED. The customer service there is top notch. We had gone to a similar dress shop down the street before going into WhatchmaCallit and they didn't even greet us or cared when we left after 5 minutes of being ignored. Really stupid on their part because I had an unlimited budget to work with. We found the dress of her dreams. They were so helpful and so accommodating! I WILL BE COMING BACK FOR EVERY EVENT FROM NOW ON!! more

Whatchamacallit is robbery 3/17/2014

I put an exclusive dress on layaway for my daughter in January that was 809 and in march I paid this dress off only to find out when I paid it off and picked it up after the transaction was made that this exclusive dress was not exclusive and that the dress was 599 and they would not refund my money only give me store credit. For some thing I will never use again. And then the alterations guy had the nerve to ask if I had money for alterations more

Long Time Customer 3/10/2012

I find it funny that "Highland P" claims that the workers are undocumented. I bet she can tell citizenship status while driving, or dining out too. What a bigot. The alterations room is quite nice, and perhaps she should educate herself of what defines a sweat shop, and it's not the presence of a sewing machine, or an accent. I started shopping at Whatchamacallit in 1995 for prom, and continued to shop there until I moved out of state last year. The store is very unique and has a great selection. Yes the dresses are pricey, but I always found one that I loved. Magic Stitch was able to alter every garment to my shape as if I were wearing true couture. more

Prices Too High, Undocumented Workers & Terrible Alterations 3/4/2012

Don't shop at this store. The prices for the dresses are too high for the quality...just go down the street to Terry Costa. There are undocumented workers working at this store including an older salesperson and a young woman in the alterations department. When I spoke to a salesperson about why the undocumented hispanic lady in the alterations department would work in what are sweat shop conditions, she told me she couldn't work elsewhere because she was illegal. It's sad really because the two people who are in charge of alterations are completely incompetent and are completely taking advantage of this poor girl's situation. Should I had bothered to actually purchase the overpriced dress I was considering, I MOST certainly would have not used their alterations department. The lady fitting my hem was using tailors chalk and telling me I look like a Miss America. Someone must explain to this woman that the use of tailors chalk on such overpriced dresses is a no no. Also, while I was looking in the mirror to decide if I should buy this overpriced dress, there were problems with other customers behind me concerning their alterations. Since Thursday, I have spoken to friends who have also told me horror stories of their experience at this store. Don't bother wasting your time here. They obviously believe it necessary to have to resort to such unprofessional and illegal means to make a buck. more

NEVER AGAIN! 5/3/2011

Bought a dress thinking I could return it if it didn't work. I had seen a dress with a tag that said "no refund" but mine didn't say that. Nor did it say on my receipt. Nor did ANYONE ever say that was their policy. When I found another dress cheaper somewhere else, I called about returning the dress and they were very rude, and argued that it's on their receipt. I read them what mine said (and they even argued that their receipt doesn't say "Whatchamacallit Fasions" which it does). No where did it say "all sales final" or "no refunds". I paid way too much and they don't make their policy clear. Won't shop there ever again. more

Do Not Shop or Use Alterations Service 3/2/2011

My daughter and I went shopping for her senior prom dress. From salesperson to salesperson, information was not the same. My daughter needed alterations for her dress. Our salesperson recommended these breast pad inserts that aren't permanent versus another alternative that was being offered through the store's alterations services which were to be sewn into the dress. When I asked the pricing difference, the sewn in alternative were less expensive than the non-permanent alternative. We decided to use the alternative offered through the alterations service to save some money, but when we turned around to pickup the pads, we noticed they had been taken away. They explained that if we wanted to use the sewn in pads that we needed to go into the alterations room and secretly request them from Tina or Danny because the store's owner was not allowing the sewn in breast pads to be sold anywhere in his store and that this particular salesperson could lose her job if he found out she had shown us the sewn in alternative. As silly as it sounds is as silly as I feel writing this, but at that moment I thought, what are we doing here and why am I bothering myself and exposing my daughter to this insane business practice. I needed to go under cover to buy some breast inserts for my daughter's dress??? So I proceeded into the alternation's room and watched as Tina would sell these inserts for $25 to which I was initially told these inserts would be $15 which also included the charge to have them sewn into the dress. My daughter had FINALLY had enough...and turned to me asking if we could just leave and she'd find a dress someplace else. Thank you...Thank you...My smart girl knew she didn't want me to spend our hard earned money in this place. Don't waste your time or money in this place. There is not one thing redeeming inside this store. The dresses inside the store can be found on the internet and in other stores for MUCH less priced and clothing alteration places are on every corner. more

Excellent service, great selection 1/14/2011

I brought my daughter and her friend here to look for pageant dresses. We were greeted at the door by the sales person and she was very friendly. Between the two girls, they must have tried on over 30 dresses. The sales staff was very helpful the entire time. Both girls found "THE DRESS" they wanted and within our price range. Sales staff was great. Now, the alteration staff- not so much. I paid WAY TOO MUCH for alterations on my daughter's dress!! My suggestion- buy it here and take it somewhere else for alterations. The personel were rude, not helpful, and my daughter was actually scared of the guy in there- he leered a little too much!! Overall, the experience was great. I would definately come back. Incredible selection of dresses. more

Awesome shopping experience 2/8/2010

I went to Whatchamacallit in Dallas on my way to an audition in Oklahoma City. The staff was so great and my sales person (Althea) was amazing. The owner was there and was so nice to work with. (New owner in the last 18 mths) Everyone in the store had such a great attitude. I brought my dad with me and he hates shopping!!!! He said it was the most pleasant shopping experience he has ever had. The selection was terrific and I found a great dress. I would highly recommend this store. Hope he is going out of business 2/1/2009

Ordered a dress for a Miss Texas USA Pageant. Paid over $1000.00. The dress was unacceptable when it came in and we wanted to exchange it for something else. We still owed $300.00 on it. He would not let us exchange it or get anything else. He has our dress and our money. He is dishonest and doesn't need to be in the business. I had to have a new dress made for the pageant. more

It is not that bad! 1/4/2009

I had a very good experience at this store. Of course, I did not go during prom season! In the real world, most types of these stores are crazy and busy during that time. They did have many dresses, and yes, some needed repair. However, some were perfect and beautiful. I did not see a bull horn but was greeted very nicely as I walked through the door. Maybe maturity is what separates the differences, after all, I would never walk into a dress shop with a drink or food. That is just plain stupidity. Food and clothing do not mix well! Think of the money one spilled drink could cost! As far as the store, I liked it and will go again. A true bargain requires patience, tolerance, and a good hunt! more

Whatchamacallit 11/24/2007

All I have to say is I walked in for 5 minutes and was yelled at by the owner to put my drink on the table with like 20 other people's cups next to each other. I found this to be unsafe. The owner walked by rolling her eyes and holding her dog. I could not find any sales reps and the ones I did find were taking turns holding the dog around the store. I asked one simple question and was treated like an idiot for asking. If you are smaller than a 3 forget it there. Some of the dresses need work done to them, some were. In the wedding department a lot of the dresses lacked anything special about them. The worst overall experience about this place was the customer service from the owner, the way she yelled at me when I walked through the front door and wanted to continue the argument. I will never step foot inside this store again and that is really sad coming from one of the people that used to advertise their store in our school news paper so they'd get more business by us sending our students there. more

Love it 9/16/2007

I went there for my homecoming dress. The lady that helped us was awesome and got us a HUGE discount. I love that store. more

Whatcamacallit 5/1/2007

I am from Chicago and I went all the way to Texas to find a prom dress this year and I must have tried on over 200 dresses before I found THE ONE. I first went to L'Patricia where I found a lot of dresses that I liked and then the sales girl told me about Whatcamacallit. So after going to L'Patricia and all of the Special Occasions stores I decided to go to Whatcamacallit. When I got there the store was packed with dresses and people and there was a guy in the front with a bull horn calling his workers. The first day i was there I was just too with all the chaos and I only tried on 6 dresses. So I decided to return the next when everyone else was at work and school and that's when I found the dress. This was no ordinary dress I had walked past it the day before and because it was a dark color and had black beading I didn't like it much. But it kept running through my mind so I tried it on and it was the dress I purchased. It was originally 500 dollars but the price I paid was 150. It was a debate between this one and one at Special Occasion's but I took into consideration that the people were more friendly here than there so I have that dress. The dress is like a peacock blue/ dark turquoise with beading in the front and back. It's truly something I have not seen in Chicago. The color doesn't even come close. more

A way to end up totally frustrated 4/10/2007

If you want to feel totally frustrated, agitated, and furious then watchamacallit is for you!!! The dresses drag on the ground so that people step on them. The sales people even drag dress around on the ground. The beads are falling off yet they want you to spend hundreds of dollars. Yea they have tons of dresses but searching through them is nearly impossible and most of the dresses are badly taken care. They are either wrinkled, have spots, or are just falling apart. The sales people are to worried about their commission so unless you catch one that doesn't already have one customer your screwed, or they will show you the ugliest dresses in the store. There were four girls literally fighting over a customer instead of just trying to help someone else. I asked for a size and never even got a reply if they had it or not. If I could give this place negative stars I would! Go here as a last resort! more

Whatchamacallshit 4/7/2007

the most expensive dresses ever...the owner is an asshole...go anywhere but whatchamacallit... more

Big Disappointment 3/5/2007

Yes, the selection was great and surely you could find something there. But actually getting in there to "hunt" down a dress is nearly impossible. There is hardly any organization to the dresses (three+ sections of red dresses??). A girl in the next fitting room wanted to try on one of the dresses I had, but the sale assistant didn't even know where to begin looking - I was the one that had to point her in the right direction. If you found a dress that you liked, there was a 50% chance that something was wrong with it and the salespeople swore they could fix it but some of the problems were not even close to being fixable. There were bars on the windows, lack of climate control, and a man with a megaphone at the front yelling at all the staff to attend to their customers. It was not professional by any standard and proved to be a very overwhelming shopping experience. The lady that helped me was eating food that her boyfriend brought up for her. Very unprofessional. I would try to stay away unless you just can't find a dress anywhere else. more

Formal Wear 8/3/2005

If your are looking for a dress, this is the place to shop. They have just about any kind of dress you are looking for. If you have a special occasion to attend and need a dress, you will find it here. There price are average and they have great customer service at the store. The only problem is they do have a very strict return policy. more
