Just wanted to put a note out there - Westside has reopened as the Amsterdam Ale House. It's a great bar with an excellent beer selection. I've enjoyed going there for lunch often. Pros: Spicy grilled chicken sandwich, beer selection more

Unfortunately, closed its doors on 12/31/08! 1/5/2009

My wife and I ate and drank here every Friday night for years, and always looked forward to it. Unfortunately, it is no more. Greedy landlords are ruining the Upper West Side! more

The Best Bar in the UWS 12/29/2008

I am a regular at this place. They have a great selection of beers and food are pretty good for bar grubs. This is not a gastropub so don't expect to find Berkshire pork loin roast with mango salsa on the menu. Too bad this place is closing on 12/31/08. Pros: Friendly staffs, Great selection of brews, Good food more

Vey BAD 6/17/2008

I would not recommend it to anybody. The beer selection for brewery mediocre at best, but food quality is horrible. We ordered two appetizers (Jalapeno peppers and nachos) but could not eat any of those. They just horrible. I do not understand how can you spoil those simple dishes. Also we had to wait for a long time even to get a beer. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE Pros: can not come up with any Cons: very bad quality of food poor service more

I Love the Westside 4/23/2008

I think these reviews were written by my neighbors. I live on W 75th and go to this bar about every other day. It is one of the best bars in NYC. The staff is friendly and professional, and most of the patrons are considerate and easy to talk to. The beer selection is truly amazing. My guess is that they have about 100 bottles and about ten permanent drafts including most of the best selling national micros as well as Chimay Tripel, Guinness, and an English cider. In addition they rotate through the remaining pumps all the small lot brews of such fine micros as Ithaca, Allagash, and Dogfishhead along with one or two small Belgian Abbeys. more

In addition they rotate through the remaining pumps all the small lot brews of such fine micros as Ithaca, Allagash, and Dogfishhead along with one or two small Belgian Abbeys. The food is quite good, if you recognize that the place is first and foremost a neighborhood bar. It has a kitchen not much bigger than a closet and a staff of two who turn out really fine bar food like burgers, quesadillas, and salads. They need a new recipe for mussels, as the current version features a thick red tomato sauce that is a danger to the wardrobe for something that must be eaten with fingers. However, most of it is free of those dangers, too. The place is always crowded, even in winter on Saturday afternoon, when the back room is filled with local moms and a few dads with their babies in strollers. The numbers of return customers suggests that many are finding what they are looking for, and based on the rents in the area, most of these people could afford to eat and drink wherever they liked. This brings me back to the letters reflecting discontent with the Westside. These writers must simply be trying to discourage additional people from adding to the crowds already there. more

Gret Place to Go After a Visit to the Museum 12/29/2007

We went to the Museum of Natural History on 12/28/2007 & walked to the brewery a few blocks away. We were a party of 6 & had great service & the food was very good in this pub style reataurant. There were other families there with little children & the menu variety is wide enough for any age. They have hamburgers, macaroni dishes, steaks, ribs & even buffalo burgers! The beer selection was unbelievable. Pros: Pub style family place reasonably priced Cons: Beer prices high but it's NY! more

Went here last night for a couple of beers prior to a show at the Beacon Theatre with a group of friends. We had our beer standing at the bar and were charged 18% gratuity on our tab. If we had been sitting at a table I wouldn't have found this so unbelievable, but we were standing AT THE BAR, and the service was very poor. I asked the woman at the bar was this normal practice and she said it is there as they get a lot of people who just don't tip enough and they rely on the tips! I've worked in a bar myself, so I understand that the tips make up most of the wage , bu I would have been fired for doing this. I found it very offensive that the implication was that we were not going to leave a lagre enough tip. I I have been living in New York for 10 years and never seen this done anywhere else. I will not be going back to this place ever again. Cons: 18% Gratuity added when having a drink standing at the bar more

shotty managament = ruin birthday 3/4/2006

my fiance n i reserved the back room of the bar 3 wks ago. At 9 we informed the hostess that we were the 10p party n received an "oooh". w/ a conscending attitude at 10 we were told that the party before us was running late n we could be in there by 1030- no apology, nothing. our guests arrived as we polietly wait in the overcrowded front rm n and by 11 we were asked to move tables. a mngr then told us the party before us had no intention on leaving anytime soon n since "they were already spending $$, we cant kick them out". now with 30 guests and 2 hrs of crap, we were told (with no apology) that we should have "gotten the name of the reservationist since they didnt know the party before you was going all night". we decided to relocate. Pros: , beer Cons: management, attitude, social status more

Why do people like this place? 7/13/2005

We (2 people) asked to sit at a table near the wall, but were told we couldn't sit at a 4 person table. Later, we saw that a party of 2 had been seated at that table. That alone pissed me off. The food was mediocre which wouldn't be bad if everything else was ok. We were served beer wrong, which is inexcusable for a bar that prides itsself on beer. My boyfriend's beer came in the wrong glass. My beer came with no glass at all. We had to go up to the bar and get one because the servers were nowhere to be found. The label on the beer bottle even explained how to pour it into a glass- to me this indicates the beer is supposed to be enjoyed out of a glass, but apparently the bar didn't care. This place is a crap establishment. Pros: beer selection Cons: service, food, presentation more

Bon appetit... elsewhere 5/17/2004

At first, I figured I'd call it just your average upper Westside spot. But man, the service just killed us. The hostess was a doll, but from there, everyone was stunningly slow and rude. I've never come across a more pathetic waitress, and then a busboy stole half of my friends' quesadilla platter before they were finished. Stunning, people, stunning. On the other hand, we were able to enjoy more of a beautiful Saturday early evening in the city. The food was solid, the portions healthy, and the beer selection unbeatable. Best of all, though, they allow dogs on the deck and provide water dishes for them. Sounds great, eh? I'm telling you, the service was THAT bad. Good company can usually overshadow a bad night out, but really, with thousands of alternatives at your fingertips, why waste your time? Pros: Beer selection, Sizable outdoor space, Dog-friendly more
