Lovely historic location; horrible food 6/21/2005

I was looking forward to visting this historic location and my financee's family treated us; seemingly a stroke of luck. The Inn is lovely; worth a visit to wander round the fascinating property & buildings. The staff are friendly and fast. This is where the experience ended. The food was of a lower standard than a truckstop buffet. The salad was wilted lettuce with packet (!) dressing. My roasted lamb was fatty grey cold slabs with brown sauce straight from the packet. Vegetables were boiled or microwaved; not sure which. My finacee's salmon was another cold slab with burnt stove-top breadcrumbs on top. Other two meals were equally forgettable, straight from the chafing dish. My advice - go, have a drink at the bar, enjoy the history. The food is the worst I've had in a restaurant in the US. The meal wasn't worth $5 (cost $35 per head) more

  • The Scene
    Open since 1716--and it looks it: cavernous fireplace, beamed ceiling and tailored Windsor chairs. The spot was immortalized in 1863 by Longfellow in his "Tales of a Wayside Inn," and the same cast of characters almost seems to be here: married couples rekindling romance, families with dressed-up, well-behaved tots, and Oxford-clad regulars at the cozy, adjoining Red Horse Tavern.

    The Food
    The dining, too, is a little piece of history: Wellfleet Oysters on the half shell are fresh from the sea. Stuffed jumbo shrimp may not be unusual, but here they're served plump, juicy and rich. For Ye Olde flavor, go for the Wayside Lobster Pie--lobster meat in a light Newburg sauce with crumb topping. Just as deliciously retro but heartier is the filet mignon, broiled to order and slathered with brandied mushroom sauce.
