Great Food lacking Service 4/29/2004

Virago has great food it is just too bad that they don't have the service. Reservations are diregarded here. You will be lucky if they seat you within 45 minutes of the time you requested. Once you sit down the painful disregard for service continues. My suggestion is to come on a week night when they are not crowed that way you have a better chance of eating before the sunrises. Pros: Food more

Nice 4/24/2004

Last night (friday) at virago there was a great crowd, fun music, and all around great vibe. We got there around 9-10 and stayed til 2:30. The space surpasses many lounges/restaurants in cities such as Miami, Atlanta, New York, and even L.A. But, don't take my word for it.......go check it out and have a good time! Pros: FOOD, MUSIC, ATMOSPHERE Cons: , PRICE, PARKING more

It'll keep you coming back 10/9/2003

Virago is one of those bars that you can't wait to get to on a Friday night after checking out all the 'tragically hip' newcomers. Handsome bartenders who are very attentive, a great sushi menu, and mood music make this place worth the tab you'll ring up! Pros: hip, cute bartenders Cons: parking, slows down early more

Virago for sure 8/13/2003

I had oysters, a soft shell crab roll, and then roasted duck. The oysters weren't the best I've ever had (the accompanying sauces get an A in creativity, but a B- in taste), but the soft shell crab and duck were great! The only other complaint from my party were the mussels, but I didn't actually try any. I would definitely go back again, I would really like to try some other their ""non-traditional"" sushi... Pros: Food, sushi in particular Cons: a little too noisy more

Good food and service 5/7/2003

An old friend of mine told me to always order the left colum when first going to a resturant. By this he meant all the appetizers to judge the creativeness of the chef. I did and we loved it. Chef Anthony exceeded our expectations and we will visit again. Pros: Appetizers, Wine suggestion more

Virago...very nice 2/18/2003

We had dinner at Virago last night and it was incredible. The food was excellent, the atmosphere is definitely unique and the service was great. Be sure to try the yum-yum rolls, they are probably not good for you but they are very tasty... more

I agree with westwind ditch the 'tude! 1/29/2003

Nashville restaurants seem to believe haute cuisine translates into: hire attitude laden waitstaff that makes customer want to go somewhere else. I know you want to give us the experience of believing we are in a much more cosmopolitan city, but please...NY and LA called they want their attitude back 'cuz your giving it a bad name. Chill out, you'll get discovered... in the mean time see if you can bring me my drink I ordered 20 minutes ago. more

Make it so or go away. 12/31/2002

Why is it that Nashville in attempting to be on par with other cities in offering fresh and progressive cuisine has to resort to pretention that serves as a thin veil over a few degrees removed from mediocrity. Virago and others like you: bring on some soul and substance with your nouvelle cuisine and do everybody a favor and ditch the waitstaff wearing black with stupid attitudes. It's just not cool. I mean you go out to eat to actually enjoy good food mixed with some good atmosphere. Right?? Respect yourself and make it so or go away. more

YUM! 12/3/2002

Great! This place is incredible!!! Love it! I would recommend this restaurant to everyone that loves sushi! more

It's a trendy bar w/bad food 11/8/2002

Very crowded and loud. The bar seemed to be the focal point of the restaurant w/ little emphasis on food. The food was adequate but not outstanding-I would recommend the sushi. My entree of stir fry chicken/veggies was bland and overpriced. Service was fair-although the server told me I should order an alternate to what I had first chosen because he didn't like it. Bad or good? It seems like the place to go if you want to be seen but aren't particularly worried about outstanding food. Pros: Interesting interior, Service ok, Good sushi Cons: Bland entree, Bar scene, Loud more

Trendy sushi 11/6/2002

I've visited this place a few times & I've tried the sushi. It was as good as any Japanese restaraunt I've been to except the atmosphere didn't coincide w/ the food. If you're in the mood for sushi, go to a Japanese restaraunt. If you're in the mood for a drink, a great appetizer and socializing then Virago is the right place. Pros: Fashionable Cons: Parking, Bathroom! more

yummy food, cool scene 10/21/2002

Virago's food is quite good. Although we only had the sushi, it was very fresh and well prepared. It took a little while for them to make it, but it was worth the wait. Chris, the owner, was very nice and made our visit enjoyable. I will return to Virago, it has a cool bar and good food. more

BS 9/27/2002

I have two major problems with this place, that unfortunately ruined what was otherwise good sushi in a cool environment. Although the waitstaff in the bar area was great, whatever waiter we had was awful. First of all, he had a rude attitude. Then he didn't any of the specials and he couldn't explain the different sushi's in detail at all. Then when our food was served he didn't know which was which, ""That's either the yellow tail or the tuna?"" Finally, when we got the bill and had separate checks, he stood over us while we filled them. I think he thought we were going to steal his pens. The other problem, the 1/2 price drinks and sushi happy hour is a not true at all. The 1/2 price drinks do not include any premium brands and the 1/2 price sushi is only available on a couple of types. more

No Bang for the bucks!! 9/8/2002

Service was not good. Food was expensive compared to quality. Pros: Good mixed Drinks Cons: Expensive, Service, Staff Attitude more

Good food, horrible service 8/9/2002

The service at Virago has been horrible on my last two visits. I typically enjoy the food, especially the goat cheese/pumpkin seed salad but it is beginning to be overshadowed by bad service. I agree with the previous review in that Virago's concept and location are terrific but without attentive service, you'll lose diners/drinkers to The Trace, Bound'ry, Park Cafe, Mambu, etc.... Pros: unique food, martinis Cons: horrible service more

just plain awful 8/8/2002

virago's got a great concept, providing something nashville sorely needs: a casual, hip ""hangout."" unfortunately, virago fails to deliver. the atmosphere is cool and trendy, but it ends there. the service is some of the worst i've ever experienced. neither employees nor the management seem to care about customer service. i'm usually forgiving of poor service if the food makes up for it, but virago fails again. being japanese, i may be too harsh on sushi restaurants, but at virago the sushi is flavorless -- the differences in each selection is barely noticeable. it's not that it tastes bad, but rather that when i'm paying $5+ per order, i expect something spectacular. again, i wish i could give a glowing review to virago, with its location and fun atmosphere. unfortunately, until they can improve service and quality, i'll have to leave this one to those who can't see beyond appearances. Pros: atmosphere, location, concept Cons: service, quality, price more

The WORST service in Nashville! 6/21/2002

I cannot judge this restaurant without judgng the worst element of all - The ""service"". My server smelled like one giant cigarette. I arrived with reservations and my server stomped over to our table, acted like I was lucky to be her customer and tried to basically ignore us. I found one of her long dark curly hairs in my food. I have tried this place three times now and twice with the same server! - how do these girls keep their jobs? I am probably considered one of the most meek people on earth and I have never before been obliged to complain about anything at a restaurant until now. But the owners NEED to seriously reconsider their staff. I have heard the same from four of my closest friends and their mates and it keeps all of us away. NOTHING is worth the treatment. more

It really is good 5/24/2002

Like a lot of the restaurant reviews on this site, this one seems to be stuffed with overwhelming reviews that sounds very simliar... But if you can ignore the obvious padding of the reviews here, read this one. Virago's has an excellent sushi bar. The seafood dumplings were really good too. I'm not sure that I am excited about the flip side of the menu that has more WASPy items, still mostly seafood though. Their rice is in particular is escellent. There is a tendency of a lot of sushi places in Nashville (Ken's, Miyako, et al) to load the rice up with lots of salt to cover for any potential spoilage of the fish. Not here - fresh fish and yummy rice. The atmosphere is cool but not too forced (far less cheez than Boundary or Trace). It's a fun place with great sushi.. enjoy Pros: Cool, Sushi Cons: "Fishy" menu, "Fishy" reviews here more
