Wonderful little spot 7/16/2010

While the portions are small, the bite is big. The four cheese ravioli was one of the most decadent and delicious dishes I've had in awhile. The staff was very friendly and the sommelier was great for recommendations on wine to match the dishes we ordered. Ended up spending a bit more than expected as we had to order a couple more dishes to feel full, but each bite was incredibly tasty. Pros: food, wine list, atmosphere Cons: cost more

Caveat emptor 11/17/2009

I'm compelled to write a review to say, be careful of the wine expert's recommendations. I went with a group of friends and we were looking at wines in the $50-70 range. The wine expert (I think his name is Ryan and I don't think he's a real sommelier) recommended another wine. Usually when a Sommelier recommends a wine, it is in the same price range... or he'll point out that the wine he's recommending is higher price point than what is being considered. This guy did neither and recommended a $130 bottle of wine. I didn't feel comfortable getting into it with him... but who does that? Restaurants that don't want repeat business that's who. The food wasn't all that great either. Small portions that cost a lot. Just be careful if you're planning an evening at Vinoteque. Pros: Nice flavors Cons: Expensive & misleading... more

Great experience 9/25/2009

I live just down the street and gave Vinoteque a try last night and loved it. The service was great - warm servers who were attentive but not cloyingly so. I love the community wine set up they have, where if you see a bottle on the menu you would like to try but are not 100% sure you want to commit to the enire bottle, the botle goes to the "community table" the name of the bottle goes onto an LCD screen and is open for other patrons to try. We shared several small plates and the food was very good and fairly priced. The patio is charming and and the overall experience was great. I would definitely recommend Vinoteque. Pros: warm atmosphere and service, great wine/food menu Cons: none more

wonderful addition to melrose! 8/22/2009

This restaurant recently opened on Melrose and is definitely a welcomed addition. The amuse bouche complements of the chef was a fabulous start to a wonderful evening. We had several European Plates as our meal- risotto, gnocchi, and confit duck lettuce wraps. While all of the food was fabulous, the risotto really stood out. The service was impeccable and the ambiance was sophisticated yet relaxed. The outdoor patio is lovely but the inside dining room is also great, and you can hear the live music from the Foundry next door because of the open dining room. We ended the evening with the peanut butter cup dessert which was heavenly. The wine list was great too and although they have many wines by the glass, they will open any bottle for you as long as you commit to two glasses. The price was incredibly reasonable for all that we had. we will definitely be back! Pros: great wines, reasonably priced food, great service Cons: none more

Editorial

  • Maybe it's the live music blasting out onto the sidewalk or maybe it's chef/owner Eric Greenspan's reputation (he's the former exec chef at Patina and "Next Iron Chef" contestant), but this art deco bistro knows how to bring in a steady flow and impressive mix of Melrose hipsters and gray-haired sophisticates. The front lounge and piano bar area is where crowds gather for fun evenings filled with live music and a few cocktails. Beyond the narrow dining hall and exposed kitchen is the "secret" garden patio, framed by arching trees and warmed lighting. Much like the loud and larger-than-life persona of Greenspan himself, the restaurant's staff offer both comedy and culinary expertise. The menu takes on both Southern grub and New American classics, so patrons can choose everything from short ribs, cheddar grits and greens to seared tuna with corn, roasted peppers and jicama to miso-glazed pork belly with eggplant, lotus root and long beans.
