PERFECT Birthday Cake! 8/25/2011

For my boyfriend's 23rd birthday I ordered him a two tier cake from the Village Bakery. I wanted the cake to be special and the staff worked with me to create the most perfect design! I had a vague idea to incorporate my boyfriend's vintage Triumph race car into the cake design, I told the staff they could create whatever they wanted with that design. They did not disappoint! The cake was perfect and captured everything that I wanted it too. My boyfriend and his family were blown away by the details and thoughtfulness that went into the creation.\r \r The cake not only looked like it came out of a magazine, but it was delicious too!!! I continue to recommend the bakery to all of my friends.\r \r The added plus was the price was perfect too! more

Most Amazing Birthday Cake! 8/24/2011

Superb. 7/8/2011

Their cakes are always delicious and never dry. We get cakes from Village Bakery for parties and special occasions. I have loved every single cake we've gotten from there, and I can't believe that I had never had a Village Bakery cake until I started working here! But, I'm glad that I have now! My birthday is next week, and without a doubt I'm getting a birthday cake from there. more

The Village Bakery 7/6/2011

I have lived in Tyler,TX most of my 46 yrs. and Village Bakery is a place we have enjoyed since childhood.I had to have a ginger bread cookie whenever my mom would take me. For special occasions her cakes are amazing both in presentation and melt in your mouth. My favorite changes with the seasons... summer favorite has to be strawberry cake, for fall I crave Italian cream cake, Springtime calls for her Easter egg petifores and for the holidays the rolls and chocolate cake with fudge icing are to die for!! Also, my son asks for the Hungarian pull apart bread every time I go. It is like sticky sweet monkey bread that is amazing with coffee or cold milk.\r Bettie Smith has continued her same traditions of superb quality and service throughout my lifetime. For a bakery The Village Bakery is superb!! more

Time Proven Perfection 6/27/2011

I have been a visitor to the Village Bakery for over twenty years. When my children were young a quick stop for gingerbread men or women or cookies was a must. My dinner guest enjoyed the most delicious desserts that a forty mile drive from Athens could afford. And when my daughter decided to marry, she chose to use the Village Bakery for her wedding cake. The cake was delivered on time to the Athens Country Club, an out of town venue, and was not only delicious but was gorgeously decorated and expertly adorned with brilliant crystals. Of all the vendors we dealt with planning the wedding, we knew through past experience that we need not worry about the cake. Thank you Betty, David and the Village Bakery team for making our most important events throughout the years consistently memorable! C. Walls more

Wedding Cake at the Cascades 5/24/2011

My daughter's wedding was May 7,2011 in Tyler and she picked Village Bakery to do her cake and also the grooms cake. The cake was very important to her and was the focal point of the reception entrance. She met several times with Bettie to go over ideas and perfect her expectations. Being the expert that Bettie is she made the most perfect cakes we have ever seen. And of course they were delicious. The groom wasn't able to go to the tasting and Bettie sent cake home with us for him to taste. He loved the chocolate and was very excited about His cake. The cakes were more than we could have ever expected and not only was there enough, there was plenty to take home for after the honeymoon. We had two Very Very happy newlyweds and that made us all happy. Thank you Bettie and staff for all your hard work and expertise. more

Awesome Cakes 5/19/2011

My wife and I ordered our wedding cakes from the Village Bakery and we were very pleased with them. They were very tasty and very well decorated. When we talked to Bettie about what we wanted she was very helpful and made the whole experience painless. Several months later we ordered a Blues Clues birthday cake for our sons 3rd birthday party, and it was awesome. The Blues Clues decorations were adorable, and my son still talks about his Blues Clues cake! I would definately recomend The Village Bakery to anyone in need of a cake or other baked goods for any occasion. more

Frustrating and inconsiderate, wrong wedding cake 5/10/2011

I recently got married in Tyler, Texas. We had a large wedding with 300+ people and were very pleased with many of our Tyler vendors. However, every interaction we had with Village Bakery was miserable. While tasting cakes, I had not been pleased with the customer service, but I choose to go forward with them because the cake tasted wonderful. It was not worth it. The cake did taste very good and guests enjoyed it, but the frustration my mother and I experienced was unbelievable. The bakery informed us two days before the wedding they would be unable to a cake stand because they couldn't find it. They also failed to provide an additional cake topper that was promised for us to freeze for our first anniversary. Each conversation we had with this vendor was stressful and frustrating. I also had the same experience as another bride at the wedding and discovered we had the WRONG kind of cake. What a joke! 11/19/2010

I read David's review about how he is in charge of the front counter now. Well if things are better I would hate to see how they were before! They messed up our order and overcharged us. No time to order anywhere else. The rude personell has the "Take It Or Leave It Attitude". Please beware of the Village Bakery getting your cakes as you order them. Hey but how about we overcharge you $50.00 and give you a free Cupcake next time you come in? more

Don't recommend the wedding cakes 11/10/2010

My husband and I went for a cake tasting and ordered a wedding cake for 300+ people. We decided on strawberry because it was so wonderful. When we cut into the cake at the wedding reception it was italian cream. I do not eat coconut...I was mortified . Can you image the look on my face in all the pictures?? This cake was over $1,000 and you would think the kind of cake would be correct. We were issued a partial refund. \r \r If you want cookies or small cakes Village is good, but I wouldn't take a chance with special events. more

My name is David and I am the grandson of Bettie Smith who is the owner and operator at The Village Bakery. If you've had a bad experience I am sincerely sorry. Please come by and give us a second chance. I have taken over the front and I promise to provide great customer service... If you don't beleive me, come in and let me prove it. Bettie Smith is still in charge of specialty cake and wedding cake orders because it is her vision and expertise that has helped the bakery grow over the past 40+ years that she has run it. She is not always available through out the 10 hour work day, therefore we have the message system... I am sorry if this is not satisfactory to you, but we are a small business and this is how we have always done things. If you haven't been to The Village Bakery yet, please come in and try one of our many treats; you have my promise you will recieve great service and that you will love whatever it is your looking for. RUDE!!! 5/8/2009

I called this bakery to schedule an appointment for a wedding cake consultation. I apparently needed to speak with the owner, but she did not call me back the same day. I called again the next day, she was still not available. She did call me back an hour later, and was EXTREMELY rude. I asked to make sure at the consultation my fiance and I would be able to try different cake flavors. She explained they don't allow that until you have already hired and paid them. This lady went on to explain to me that their business has been around for 70 years, and people in the community KNOW the quality of their cakes. Somehow, I kept my cool in the situation and explained to her I would call around to other places, and I may call her back. She said to me, and I quote, "Don't bother." DON'T BOTHER??? This is ridiculous that a business that's been around for 70 years would treat customers this way. DO NOT USE FOR IMPORTANT EVENTS!!! more

Not what I wanted... 7/28/2008

I have been a customer of Village Bakery for many years now, with satisfactory experiences each time. The week of July 7th, I ordered a birthday cake for a 7 year old. It was supposed to be a cake pictured in a photograph from an album I was shown at the Bakery. Two weeks later when I picked up that cake, my cake resembeled that cake, but it was not what I ordered. The cake I wanted had decorations cut from fondant, while the cake I was given had all piped icing decorations. I expressed to the two ladies behind the counter that this was not what I wanted and even had them pull out the photo album from where I chose the cake. With no time left to wait for a new and correct cake, I had to take the one they had made and leave. I will never order a cake from here again, nor will I ever prepay for a cake anywhere ever again. I believe I overpaid for the cake I received as opposed to the cake I ordered. more

this place needs lessons in customer service 5/6/2008

The first and only time I went to Village Bakery was a few Chrismas's ago. I was looking for a Christmas-theme cookie tray. THey did have one and when I handed the (rude) lady my credit card, you would've thought I was handing her a handful of excrement. In a snooty voice she said "we do not take credit or debit cards." She was very rude about it, and it really offended me the way she spoke to me. That was my experience w/ Village Bakery. I do not recommend them to anyone. If you are looking for a bakery with delicious goods and friendly service, go to Sara's Bakery on Erwin. more

absolutely hideous wedding cake 10/1/2007

We ordered a wedding cake & grooms cake from village bakery. The wedding cake was supposed to be pale pink with an ivory fondant bow on top. The grooms cake was carrot & we wanted to have a pretty light gold "M" on it. They showed us the gold color they would use for the "M" & it was beautiful. The wedding cake was pink like we wanted. However, on top - where the bow should have been - was chocolate frosting with a bright orange "M" on top.My cake was pink, black, & orange!! It was more like a halloween carnival cake! I was almost in tears & had to explain to everyone at the reception why my cake was so ugly. Never use Village Bakery!! more
