Convenient, but sketchy atmosphere 2/28/2006

Video Americain is an interesting video rental place located in Charles Village--they are convenient for the many college kids in the area, who don't want to have to drive to the nearest Blockbuster. Their rental fees are reasonable, and their selection of movies is decent--they tend to have a bunch of eclectic titles as well as mainstream movies--but they are located in the basement of an apartment building, and the store itself is old and cramped. Worth getting a membership if you don't have a car and refuse to subscribe to Netflix, but otherwise--go elsewhere. more

Video Americain 2/16/2006

Video Americain is the local indie film rental in Charles Village. While the shop looks pretty small from the street, it's got a ton of films packed into some pretty tight quarters. If you're looking to rent the latest blockbuster, don't waste your time and money on VA. However, if you're looking for a foreign or independent film and are willing to shell out a bit more to rent it, try out Video Americain. I wouldn't classify it as my favorite rental store, but it's a reliable store for movies you can't find anywhere else. more

Best Video of Baltimore 8/15/2005

Without a doubt, this is Baltimore's best video store (there is another location on Cold Spring). Video Americain boasts an outstanding collection in nearly every genre and a very knowledgable staff. They carry selections in both VHS and DVD formats. The only downsides are 1. The organization is not very intuitive and you may feel stupid asking where something is if you can't figure it out on your own. 2. The rental period is not very long compared with some of the national chains and, let's say, NetFlix. Nevertheless, especially if you're into art or indie or international films, Video Americain simply can't be beat. The city is better off for having this local business. more
