Best pizza in town and awesome staff!!! 5/30/2009

When we got there it was kind of slow and evryone seemed to know each other, kind of like a big family. They were all so nice and the service was great! It picked up throughout the night and got busy, but not to the point where you would want to leave because you can't move. The whole staff seemed to work VERY hard to make sure that everyone had what they needed. They also have a cocktail waitress on the floor and for the patio so you don't have to go to the bar for your drinks if you don't want to. We ordered some pizza (which by the way was homemade and awesome) and it came out fast even though they were busy-I was impressed! The patio is huge and is great for the summer and day drinking! You can tell the bar is an old building but it seems to give it character that you almost don't want to take away. This is a very cool place to hang out with friends and have a good time and some cheap drinks. We have been going back ever since and will continue to do so forever! Pros: Great service, awesome food, cheap drinks Cons: Kind of old, but it gives it character. more

We have given up on this place.. 3/4/2009

We live in the Camden Greenway apartments right behind the Velvet Melvin. Even so, we have completely stopped going there. The place is run-down and dirty; the furniture is torn, broken, and old. The menus are sticky with old food and beer, the tables are rarely cleaned, and it is not rare to see trash on the floor. The place smells like a coffin and the women's restroom is too often stopped up with feces and paper - disgusting!! But that is the least of your worries.. We have been served flat/skunky beer too often and complaints just get a ""What else would you rather have?"" My boyfriend ended up horribly sick after eating their Melvin Melt. We gave the place one last chance on Superbowl Sunday. We had to ask for the music to be turned down so we could hear the TV. To top things off, we both got stomachaches from the free jello shots they gave out during the Superbowl. Unless you are depressed and drinking alone, I strongly suggest you go somewhere else. Pros: Steak Night / Big-A** Beer night on Wednesdays Cons: Nasty place, skunky beer, illegal parking allowed more

a few months ago it was ok until......... 8/24/2008

I have been to this pub 2-3 times with a group of freinds and it has been ok until one night. One of the female bartenders (skinny one with brn hair and a piercing over her right eye) was just angry at the world or just very foul natured towards us(group of girls and guys). I had finished my drink and waited patiently for whichever bartender to come around. They were either too busy talking to their freinds or talking to the jerks that actually do give them a hard time at the other end of the bar. So no worries I waited and the one that kept passing by was either ignoring us or just didnt see us. Eventually she stood in front of us and was pouring a pitcher. I tried to call her (we were all on empty by now) and she just ignored us. She stared right past us up at the TV and we were right in front of her. So I raised my glass and as I did the glass shook and the ice made a bit of noise. She miraculously heard that noise and not me. She instantly turned to the other bartenders at the end of the bar motioning a hand in the air as if shaking a glass, mimicing what she thought I was doing. They looked right at me and then came up to see if we needed anything. I explained to the other bartender that I think I had upset the inner balence of the sensitive bartender who was ignoring us and I appologized. I have been to pubs like this all over the world and I have never been treated like this by any bartender ever. I am always polite and I dont get stupid when I drink. I used to own a bar and thus I know what it feels like on the other side of the bar. I always told my waitstaff to give the customer the benefit of the doubt, handle the jerks as you feel you shood, pay attention to everyone no matter how much they spend, and if you cant handle it then find a new bar to work at or find a new career alltogether. Speed counts when trying to make tips as does nammers. You can be both fast and polite at the same time. Some tenders forget that. It cost her that night. Pros: its common, diverse crowd with polite/freindly patrons, good location Cons: bad service, band plays old music, expensive liquor more

The first three tap beers I tried were spoiled and nasty. 7/30/2008

Went to this place after work, couldnt find a parking lot (parked on the street). The inside is nasty, the A/C vents are black. The chairs and bar are all gross. I orderd a Bluemoon on tap, I noticed the beer was discolored, almost clear. I tasted it and it was spoiled. I told the bartender and she acted like she could care less, she gave me a Shock top on tap and it was bad too! I told her about it and she then said she would let someone know. I then asked for a sample of the Guiness on tap, it also was bad.... I dont think they clean the lines or service the taps. I felt grossed out after sipping these tap beers. She didnt even flag them as not to use until checked. I couldnt wait to get out of this place. I will never go back. I am not a picky person but this place was nasty. Cons: parking, tap beer, smell. more

BEST Happy Hour Bartender and Drink Specials 6/7/2008

After work this is the best happy hour spot. It may be a hole in the wall, but sometimes those are the best places. The bartender (Jessica) is not only hot, but fast and funny. She will keep you smiling while getting you tipsy. I go here just to see her, maybe the drinks too. It is definitely the best place for a drink after work!!! Pros: Bartenders and Drink Specials Cons: hmm... more

Very unmotivating 3/21/2008

Hi, me and a friend went to the Velvet Melvin the other night and was sortof rudely welcomed. No one even smiled at us. I hate going into an establishment and from the get-go not feeling welcome. The tap beer was very expensive, too. This club used to be a cool hang-out in the 90s with all the velvet pictures and bands, but now it seems almost like a high-end ice-house. I felt really uncomfortable there and we left after only one cocktail. more

Great hole in the wall!! 10/24/2007

We love going here!! It's small and personal & the bartenders are pretty cool. If you not looking into a fancy place and expensive drinks then this is the bar. more

love this place 10/1/2007

they have big beer specials every sunday and wednesday, you need to bring your glass though. and a great steak special on wednesday. it's a little small, but cozy. there is a decent sized patio. the bartenders are all really sweet too. they also have really good potent jello shots for a dollar. been going here for years and will continue to come. Pros: great waitstaff, good steak nights, cheap beers Cons: parking more

Cheap drinks, Great Specials, and AWESOME Bartenders 9/8/2007

As a frequent patron of Melvin's, I had to say a few words to get the facts out. Yes, the building is alittle on the old side, the bathrooms arent world class, and parking is a hassle if you dont know what you're doing; but the bar just rocks! I have met the best people in just casual conversation, over a game of pool, or just walking by. The atmosphere is always light and fun, with never a worry about altercations or disruption of mood. I drop by every week as a ritual on my day off, and will continue to. Take advantage of the awesome drink specials and happy hours prices early. OH, and they carry Tito's Vodka distilled right here in the great state of Texas! As good as Grey Goose, but not French. Pros: Cheap drinks, nice, hot bartenders Cons: parking more

Subpar. 2/25/2007

This place is pretty ridiculous. First of all, we weren't really sure where the heck to park. When we finally found a place, we ended up having to trapse down a steep parking garage ramp, and navigate over the crumbling cement. When we got inside, I ordered a drink, but when my friend went to order his, a screwdriver, super easy, right? They didn't have the ingredients. Had I not already paid, I'd have walked out. So, we got my drink and shared it, and couldn't find a place to sit or stand that wasn't really awkward. They have 2 or 3 tables, and 10-12 chairs...that we're all around one table. I think there was a ratty couch, too. The place was pretty nasty, and they stiff you on the drinks. My drink had a splash, at best, of vodka in it. It was definitely not worth 4 dollars for a cherry-splash-of-vodka-sour. Also funny to note, these jokers have pool tourneys on Sundays... on all 2 pool tables they have. How ridiculous is that!? Pros: None. Cons: Stiff you on the drinks, gross on the inside, no place to sit. more

MOST TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE... 2/21/2007

on feb 20, 2007, this pub tended to me and my friends and totally POCKETED the CASH we gave to pay for our drinks , and still charged my friend's credit card. So basically we paid for our drinks TWICE, and the waitress kept the cash and lied to the manager. we spoke to the manager and the owner and neither will take our word and said there was nothing they could do. even though there was 3 of us to confirm that cash was given over. Don't go to this pub, unless you want to pay for your drinks twice. Bad service, dishonesty, theft...... that's what you'll find at this bar. more

Awesome Spot For After Work 3/12/2005

This place is great! There's a huge wooden patio if you want to sit outside or there are tables inside. When we go here I feel like I'm at a friends place. I would definitely recommend this spot to grab a drink after work. more
