No attitude well equipped gym 9/19/2008

This place has always been low-key, possessed the best live-and-let live atmosphere, been friendly to all shapes, sizes, colors and creeds. The manager Hassad has does his level best to make the place perk up and it has. He is a hoot. The gym is well equipped with machines and free weights and various classes. The jiu-jitsu class seems especially popular. I like this place. more

apologize 11/3/2007

i apologise for the previous review. it was posted as a joke, by a friend, without my knowledge. i would like to apologise to kivieg for the insult. i'm sure this is a great gym, and you should definetly check it out.\r sorry for wasting your time more

innovative... 10/26/2007

I received a flyer advertising a ""non-macho, queer-friendly"" Brazilian JuJitsu/Mixed Martial Arts experience at Valencia Street Muscle. I had never even known there was a gym there, but I decided to go check it out. I went to watch a class and meet the instructor - Sergio, and he was very friendly (easy on the eyes too) and supportive. I have always enjoyed watching the Ultimate Fighting events and wanted to learn self-defense and I even tried a couple of the local JuJitsu academies. I found them to be way too macho and homophobic so I stopped going. That's definitely not the case at Valencia Muscle...and the gym has everything I need to get a great workout so I going to cancel my membership at Gold's. \r Pros: Brazilian JuJitsu! Cons: older equipment more

Love it! 10/25/2007

I just moved into the neighborhood and saw this gym and decided to check it out...and am I glad I did! I love this place. It's never crowded so I don't have to wait for the machines I want to use - even during the ""busy"" times. It definitely has a very ""neighborhood"" feel, which I prefer to the chain gyms any day. \r The gym has Yoga classes on Thu nights and that's been great and I'm even considering trying their JuJitsu classes...scary! But the main thing I like is the low-key workout environment. The people are just there to workout, not to pose, cruise or bs, which makes me feel very comfortable in my non-fashionable gym attire! \r Highly recommended! Pros: no crowds, mellow atmosphere, no bs. more

Confused 1/7/2007

Its not that this gym is so bad, it?s just so confused and no one, owners or employees seem to care about the place. Some employees want it to be a hip gay meat market, some want it to be a cool trendy Pilate?s gym and owners are secure in its old school look. It is old school, which I like. The equipment is a bit tired but more than useable and the place is pretty clean. The employees, I use that term loosely don?t work. I mean ever, they do nothing more than open the door and turn the lights on. The main employee who seems to be there at all times insists on playing his own mix of gay club music (90?s gay club music). The same f#*!ing cd every day! If this guy was gone the place would jump two fold in quality. They would not have to put a dime into this place to make it better just give a S!*T once in a while. Change the music once in a while, Rock, Hip Hop hell country, just change. Change the rags that people should use to wipe down the machines. They were white at one time, they are now black. Don?t chose this gym if these little things would bother you. I have been a member for 5 years and since I can no longer take listening to the same tracks over and over again each day I am looking for new place. It?s a shame because it?s just what I want but the employees here don?t seem to realize they are not at the End Up circa 1997. Pros: old school. just come to work out no BS'ing, no posing Cons: employees are useless! dont care and play the same music, i mean same songs over and over more

AVOID THIS SKETCHY BUSINESS 12/18/2006

Very sketchy business. I pre-paid for a year membership this past summer. During the first 3 weeks of my membership, half of the gym would go dark whenever i ran on the treadmill--the fuse pops! It didn't happen once or twice, it happened multiple times. TV's off, all treadmills dead stop (very unsafe) and complete darkness. Total joke, like a movie. Except not funny. Every time it was ""Oh, it's getting fixed tonight"" or ""they're fixing it this weekend."" After 3 weeks, I tried to quit and get the remainder of my money back. They're holding on to it. Total cheats. BE VERY CAREFUL.\r I won't even mention that the machines are fraying and the circulation is poor so the place smells funny. That's opinion and I'll just stick to the facts. There are plenty of other respectible gyms around. Save yourself and go somewhere else. Pros: very very cheap but they steal your money Cons: Unethical management, old fraying machines, dangerous, poor circulation, unhelpful staff more

Great Cheap Neighborhood Option 2/12/2006

I found Valencia Muscle and Fitness driving down the road. The place is old school, so if you want to go to a gym to show off your newest outfit, this place probably isn't for you. If you want a great workout, Valencia Muscle and Fitness has every type of weight machine you could imagine. There are no enrollment fees, and a 6 month membership is somewhere around $200 bucks. The people are eclectic, but the gym is clean, the machines, although old, work brilliantly, and you don't have to worry about being stared at while you work out. The people at Valencia are there for a workout, not to try to pick you up. All I can say is that it is Old-School Fabulous. more

nice neighborhood place 7/15/2005

I joined more than a year ago after my previous gym raised their membership fees once again and I was not willing to pay more than 70$ a month for membership + locker in a plain simple gym. After shopping around for a while I chose Valencia Street Muscle. I found it to be nice and unassuming, no frills equipment, clean and friendly. the clientele is nice and local. If you're tired from the big gym chains and their outrageous used-car-dealership-style ""sign up"" ""registration"" membership"" fees"" this is the place for you. They have enough equipment to satisfy your training needs, especially if you're not a serious body builder. the price is unbeatable, with bottom line cost of almost half of gold's/24hours etc. added benefit is their 5$/month locker - over all a great value they open every day until 10 which works well for me after work. Pros: Friendly, Local, Value Cons: Older Equipment, Small shower area more

Power Failure 6/26/2005

I just signed up for a 7-month membership. I arived to work out at 8pm tonight---the gym hours are 6-11 on Mondays. The gym was closed. The sign on the door read, ""Gym Closed Due to Power Failure Monay 6/27"" The power in all other shops around the building seemed to be working fine. I'm worried that I may have chosen the wrong gym. Pros: Good Equipment Cons: Lies about Hours more

Not so neighborhood ... 2/3/2004

The reason I joined this gym was to support a neighborhood place. Unfortunately when I needed to cancel I missed the cut-off by a few days and the owner insisted on charging me for two months when I won't be able to use the gym at all. Plus he was rude. If he was going to be a stickler for the policies, at least be sympathetic about the lost $$! Sucks -- not so neighborhood when it comes down to it. Also, the equipment is quite old and the exercise classes have been sporadic at best. Pros: low-key atmosphere, big stretching room Cons: , no steam room/sauna, yucky showers more
