Editorial review from Citysearch 9/14/2013

Great place to take your animals.....only if you are able to pay in full at the time of service.\r \r Let me start by saying that Dr. Garza and the staff of VCA Ben White Animal Hospital have done a wonderful job of taking care of my many dogs over the past fifteen years. My dogs (3 of them) and I have always received excellent care and were treated with the utmost respect. I always felt that their main concern was the care of my animals. Yet, it is regret that my last experience with them left me with the impression that through the years the care was excellent until I reached a point where I could no longer shell out $500 or $1000 for the care of my pet. Then things took a very different turn.\r \r I retired last year, and as such, I am now living on a fixed income. One day, my 14 year old Lab woke up with a tooth abscess from a broken tooth. I rushed him to Dr. Garza and VCA Ben White Animal Hospital for treatment. He was given antibiotics for the abscess and oral surgery was recommended. It was necessary to get the broken tooth removed. After Dr. Garza left the treatment room, the clinic manager (?) came in with an estimate for the removal of the tooth - about $500. Since I had been loyal to the clinic and was by no means a stranger to the Doctor or the staff, I asked if I could pay half the cost at the time of surgery and half at my next social security check. I felt the person I was dealing with was not concerned about my dog, but about getting the payment. She suggested I put it on a credit card, or look into the pet insurance program VCA offered (I was previously told my old pets didn't qualify), or to see if I could get a loan through one of the credit card companies they deal with. But, they were not going to perform the necessary surgery until they could be paid in full at the time of service. (So much for the priority of the health of my animal.) So, I got the antibiotics for his tooth and waited until my next social security check came in and I could take my dog down to Dr. Garza to have the tooth removed. \r \r Needless to say, I have found a wonderful, caring dentist that will work with me on the big payments (which, fortunately have not happened, yet). I do have a semi-annual physical for my dog (Storm) and he has agreed that I can pay a little each month before and after the exam. A large expense has come up, and he reduced my bill a little, and worked with me on payment of the surgery. \r \r Dr. Garza and VCA Ben White Animal Hospital is a wonderful clinic, great staff, and excellent attitude ......until you cannot afford to pay the bill in full at the time of service. I really hate to say this but after 15 years and 3 dogs, it finally came down to my ability to pay the big bills, and not the health of my pet. This is so sad for such a great clinic. I recommend it only if you know you can afford to pay.\r more

Not interested in pets only money 9/7/2010

This animal hospital pulled a "bait and switch" to get me to bring my dog in for an examination. I contacted them about an examination, vaccinations and blood work to monitor my dog's thyroid condition. I told them up front I use Petmeds for medications. If they won't work with Petmeds I would use a different vet. I was told not only do they work with Petmeds they will price match through their office. I made an appointment to bring my dog in. more

Once in the exam room the Vet Tech reviewed my dogs history and confirmed what I was there for, a basic exam and blood work to determine if my dog needed to remain on thyroid medication (he's been on the same medicine at the same dosage for 5 years. Annual bloodwork is required to verify his levels and renew his prescription). The Vet Tech attempted to upsell me into a $450 "senior wellness" package. After again explaining what I was there for and agreeing to a price the exam was completed and blood sent to the lab. I was told the lab would take 48 hours. The Vet Tech again confirmed they match Petmeds pricing for my dog's specific medication. 48 hours later the vet calls and confirms my dog's blood levels haven't changed and they will have the prescription ready that afternoon. I again ask about pricing, they confirm they will match Petmeds price if I bring in a print out showing the cost from Petmeds. I go to the vet with my print out. The receiptionist get my prescription, I present my Petmeds print out. I am told they will not price match, and they do not sell the generic medication my dog has been on for 5 years and want to change him to a non generic new medication. I decline and say I will place my order through Petmeds. The receptionist says that is fine. I place my Petmeds order the next day, a Friday. Petmeds contact Ben White Animal Hospital on Tuesday and is told they will not confirm the prescription. Petmeds informs us of this Tuesday afternoon. My wife calls the office, explains the situation and is told a vet will call her back. The vet calls back, my wife explains the situation the vet confirms they will not deal with Petmeds. My wife asks that an exception be made considering the circumstances and that we are almost out of medication. The vet declined. After the attempted upsell, the lying about the using Petmeds, and the refusal to use generic meds I'm left feeling VCA Ben White Animal Hospital doesn't care about pets, only money. more

Nice staff - great doctor 10/16/2008

I'm surprised there aren't more (any!) reviews of this wonderful pet hospital. I've been taking my dog Maggie there for years and have always had good experiences. They were bought out recently by a chain called VCA so I was a little sceptical on my recent visit but I found that aside from the new name and some brochures the place and people were the same. Bill is a great doctor, relaxed and knowledgeable - not pushy. April the tech was really nice and went over my bill before hand to make sure I only got what I wanted and wasn't surprised later. I would highly recommend them for any check up or emergency. Pros: Staff, doctor Cons: not cheap - but not outrageous more

good emergency pet care 11/29/2005

When one of my dogs needed to get to the vet, and my regular veternairian was not available, I took my dog to the Ben White Pet Hospital. The vet was a bit crowded, but I still recieved the personal care that I appreciated. They had all of the state of the art equipment to make the diagnosis quick, and painless for my dog. We recieved the medicine right there at the clinic, and I also paid a very reasonable rate for the care I recieved. more
