A portal to another dimension 7/28/2011

I read a fantastic comic book series once called Timespirits. In one chapter the two protagonists enter a kind of cosmic Grand Central Station with portals leading to various alternate universes, the past and future of this world, etc. There were all sorts of crazy relics from forgotten aeons strewn about. Anything was possible. Utah Book and Magazine is kind of like that. It's not just a bookstore. It's a meeting place for the strange, the unusual, the fantastic and the utterly bizarre. And they have candy bars. And a giant shoe. I first went there for old comics, which they have in abundance (as well as vintage monster magazines). And if you need a coconut carving, or a King Kong doll, or some used golf clubs, this place has you covered. Now, if you prefer a stiff, well-organized bookstore with artificially friendly clerks that sell books and only books, this is not the place for you. The guy who runs this store is the real McCoy and he knows his literature. Anyhow, don't take my word for it. Go in and get lost in a labyrinth of deteriorating pulp and odd-ball memorabilia from better days. You may never leave. more

Not at all helpful 4/14/2010

I called this shop hoping to find a used copy of a particular book. I named the title and author and that the book was probably in the 'young adult' section. The guy working said: ""Oh all of those are just piled in the back."" I sat there for a second, waiting.. like.. is that it? Or, is he going to put the phone down maybe and go take a quick peek on the shelves? Nope. That was it. Didn't even say ""If you want to stop in I'll help you rummage around back there to look for it"" or anything. Just said: ""OK?"" Like, ""Are you done wasting my time?"" Pah. Pros: friendly enough about his laziness I guess Cons: wouldn't put the phone down to help me more

One of the best finds in SLC 3/17/2010

Everywhere from vintage LIFE magazines, to boxes of every comic in the 90's, to 1920's childrens books - ALL at great prices, I was blown away. Pros: great prices, huge selection, great condition, friendly Cons: nothing more

In Loving Memory Of Skip Marshall 11/27/2008

STAND by Debbie Williamson LOCAL AUTHOR 2/18/2008

This book is a beautiful story written by a local woman whos great grandmother was a Utah pioneer. It is very controversial but is a story that should be told. Utah needs to wake up and except this book with open hearts and especially open minds. It was difficult to get through but what a beautiful ending, my heart goes out to her and hope her book is excepted in our society. more

Peter Marshall Rocks! GREAT BOOKS! 12/30/2005

I have been coming to Utah book and magazine for over 10 years now. Peter Marshall is fair and he will make sure you get a great deal. From books and comics to vintage adult magazines your sure to find what your looking for. Peter is much friendlier than any of the folks at Sam Weller books. If you come to this store at 6:00 a.m. you can witness a hell of a poker game with peter and his brother/friends. Legend has it that Peter is a relative of Penny Marshall and she's been in his store. EXCELLENT! Pros: Great books, Great service, Great price Cons: none, none, none more

Utah Books 2/4/2004

Utah books is not what you call your average place. Tho the owner is interesting as hell. watching the people that come in to the place is just as fun as shopping there. With an amazing amount books and styles, your prices can range from very cheap to very expensive. If your a comic book lover.. well you need to shop here. Pete Marshall has one of the best old comic section you will fine. and if you are into the adult sections (Playboy, Hustler) there is a happy little hidden section also. so check it out never know what is going to happen or what your going to fine. but most likly he will have it! he now also takes visa and mc.
