never going back... 4/29/2009

I was here on a Friday night catching up with friends. Everything was fine until we were told we had 5 minutes to finish our drinks- and it was only 2:15! Our drinks were full since we had replenished them about 15 minutes before. No one had warned us about last call or asked if we needed anything else, and we were 1 of 2 tables in the bar. To make matters worse, when we didn't jump up and leave immediately, the staff began making extremely rude comments and asking each other loudly, ""Are they gone YET??"" They won't be seeing me ever again, that's for sure. If I could give no stars, I would. Cons: extremely rude staff more

Awesome atmosphere! 7/5/2008

This bar is right in my neighborhood and has become my regular spot! It has a really cool, lounge-like atmosphere, good cocktails and a decent menu. An ideal spot to relax over a few drinks with friends. The only downside is that they tend to close early during the week (i work in foreign markets and keep later hours), but Friday nights are a must here! more

Under the Volcano? Care to explain further?! 2/5/2008

Went to ""Under the Volcano"" last week after work. What a bust. I may not be a NYC native (from a boring state) but I expected more... What's in a name? more

Excellent Bar 5/28/2007

One of my favorite bars in NYC. An excellent selection of sipping Tequila combined with a very downtempo and sophisticated crowd. Pros: Tequila selection, People, Service Cons: Location, if you're not in Midtown already more

A Place You Feel Welcome 6/4/2006

This after work/neighborhood watering hole is one of the most comfortable places in midtown to relax after a long day. The young ladies who tend bar are beautiful, personable and efficient. Their skill at building margaritas is nothing short of spectacular. Everyone is truly made to feel welcome and I have heard several references comparing the friendliness to ""Cheers"" on TV. Pros: Melanie, Renee, Allison Cons: Not open 24/7 more

Tequila heaven in mid-town 4/29/2006

Wow! Wadda hangover! Who wudda guessed that there is as much to tequila as there is to beer? Hard, soft, light, smoky, you name it. This place has 'em all and is not above pouring you a little to let you try before you buy. A knowledgeable, bardendress , friendly atmosphere, and not over-crowded make this a nice mid-town visit. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers Pros: tequila selection, not loud, not crowded more

A swell place 10/20/2005

I've been going to the volcano for years now and I still love it! It's got a nice chill mellow vibe and the music is always seems to be what I'm wanting to hear at the time. The music isn't that loud, so the corners are quiet enough to actually have a conversation. Even when it's packed (i.e. Thursdays and Fridays) you can still manage to get to the bar without having to weed your way through too much. Wait staff is friendly, drinks are nice and strong. Selection of Tequilas is quite impressive! Pros: Rare tequilas, Decor, Music selection Cons: No more pom 'ritas! more

Outstanding 7/26/2005

Cozy and romantic. Fantastic place for an after work drink. The atmosphere on Thrusdays are thrilling. The bartenders are the greatest and the service is prompt and courteous. Pros: Atmosphere, Price, Rum and coke Cons: Hidden Gem more

Perfect 10 8/18/2003

This place has it all. Classy, quality drinks, low key, great staff, reasonable prices and a hidden gem. Pros: Hidden Gem, Prices, atmosphere more

Filling a void 12/9/2002

A real gem and worth a visit, in the normally barren section between Koreatown and Murray Hill. The inconspicous sign will lead you into a nicely decor'd interior with couches and well lacquered wood. The orange-red painted walls depict lava (?) flow, perhaps, but it sets the tone for what is normally a laid-back relaxed crowd. Everyone's friendly, and the bartenders are great. Excellent service is what keeps me coming back, along with their expansive tequila selection. Most nights you can find a comfy couch for your group, but Thurs and Fri bring out the midtown crowds. Get there early for some elbow room. Pros: Great Bartenders, Tequilla lovers Cons: Finger food selection more

Sophistocated tequila den 10/5/2002

UTV is, as noted by other reviewers, located in a not-hot-spot. Location is not a problem though, when you want a classy, sophistocated spot in which to sip your favorite rare Tequila. Comfy leather banquettes and stools encourage lounging, while the minimal noise level encourages conversation. NOT a meet-joint. Great for catching up with friends! Pros: Tequila choices, Nice servers, Comfy atmosphere more

A dependable stand-by 5/29/2002

It's nothing to write home about, but in an area where there isn't much to choose from as far as bars go, it's not bad. When Gingerman across the street is overflowing, you can usually still make your way to the bar at Volcano. The bartenders are all very nice. Drink selection is minimal. They only have about 6 beers or so. Their specialty is Tequila, but their margaritas are strong and not very sweet, and there are no frozen ones. There are a few apps available, like chips and salsa or a fruit and cheese plate (good bang for your buck). Basically, it's comfy for happy hour if you work nearby. Pros: Nice for the 'hood Cons: Not many drinks avail more

Great Neighborhood Bar 5/16/2002

I love going to this bar on the weekends. It is not in a busy nightlife neighborhood, so you can get a nice corner seat even on a Saturday night. How refreshing to find a place to have a drink or two with friends without being stepped on or having to scream at the top of your lungs to be heard. They have a tasty selection of beers, including Duvel and $6 Hoegaardens! The decor is great and the staff is super friendly. They even have light food fare if you feel yourself craving tamales or a nice cheese platter. more
