Fresh Change 5/17/2006

The Jewel down the street from this Treasure Island is so jam packed that sometimes I just go here to get away from the crowds. I do like this store and love the gourmet, ethnic, and fresh items they stock. Their bakery especially is really nice and they stock a lot of really fresh baked goods here. I always find their prices to be very similar to Jewel and sometimes even a lot cheaper. Some of the specials they run here are really great and a lot better than even Jewel. more

Check the expiration dates! 3/28/2006

The whole time I've lived in Chicago, I've lived near and shopped (at least sporadically) at a Treasure Island. They've never as busy as Jewel, which is understandable because they tend to have higher prices (and fewer sales). They do have a great variety of unusual or gourmet foods, or ethnic foods, but always check the expiration dates! I've found that bread is not nearly as fresh there as Jewel. Also, I've bought cheese there and, although it was prior to the expiration date, there was still mold. It makes me wonder how well-kept the store is behind the scenes. I'll buy simple things there, like sugar, but nothing else. You're better off hitting up Jewel or Dominicks for normal purchases! more

Big Cheese 3/19/2006

My parents were coming over for dinner this one night, and like the procrastinator I am - I hadn't gone to the store to get the necessities. I can't serve my parents fake food. We were going to be having a pretty traditional Italian meal, and I was in need of some good cheese and good bread. The stuff they make at Jewel and Dominick's(although good), just wouldn't do. This place has the best brads and cheeses outside of the Italian store. My family and I were completely satisfied with it. And I actually only shop at the Italian store about once a year now, just to get those really hard to find items. more

Not Bad At All 3/17/2006

This place has a fantastic selection. Go here if you are tired of the average grocery store stock. The have coffee from all over the place, which is why I started going here in the first place. The salad bar and deli are fresh. This place will be lacking in certain odds and ends that you would find at the local supermarket, but I guarantee that you can't beat their unique products and quality. more

European Supermarket 3/2/2006

Luckily, I live right next to a Treasure Island, a great supermarket that features European goodies you may not be able to find elsewhere. They also have a decent salad bar, and an extensive deli section with lots of prepared foods. They also have a dessert section, as well as soups, prepared sandwiches, heat-n-serve pizzas and more. They also offer cheap cooking lessons, although that's only in select locations. You'll want to go to a more mainstream market, i.e. Jewel, to get all your regular groceries, but Treasure Island is a good resource to find more unique items. more

A strong alternative to Jewel 8/13/2005

Treasure Island calls itself "America's Most European Supermarket." Although that description might be a bit of a stretch, this grocery store is a worthy alternative to Jewel or Dominicks. You'll find many items that aren't on the shelves of Chicagoland's two biggest grocery chains, and prices are generally comparable to the Jewel down the block. (Some items are more expensive, others are less expensive.) The one thing to watch out for...after a few too many times where I've stuck my hand into a TI refrigerators or freezer case that feels warmer than it should feel, I'm cautious about buying some perishable items at TI. more
