Have you ever experienced art so beautiful and moving that it made you want to cry? Maybe it was a movie, or a song, an opera, a painting?
The Top Pot glazed old fashioned doughnut is so good I nearly cried when I first had one. It's thick, complex, not-too-sweet. There's a flavor in there that I can't quite get a handle on (I thought it might be cardamom, but I have no idea, really). They are also somehow very pure and honest. It's hard to put into words, really.
If you're a big fan of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, these might not be right for you, just as if you're a big fan of N-Sync, Beethoven Symphonies might not be right for you. These aren't light and fluffy and crazy-sweet. They are thick and dense and scream out for the accompaniment of a rich coffee.
And even though you can get a subset of these doughnuts at one of a few thousand Starbucks stores, you really should go to the cafe on 5th avenue. It's large, light-filled, and an overall pleasant space to inhabit.
