A friend took me here once. It was a splendid experience. Extremely crowded but I guess it was because it is so popular. The sashimi slices were very filling and when the check ca...

Ok, so I'm not the biggest wasabi fan, I admit. Perhaps, you could call me a wasabi wuss. Therefore, I did not enjoy the sushi deluxe at Tomoe, as each piece was pre-seasoned with...

Tomoe - mouthwatering! 4/13/2006

This place is quite popular! Located on Thompson street and Houston next to Lupa. Most times we pass by there is a huge amount of people lined up. So the key here is to go for early dinner. I've been there 3 times now and every experience was awesome. I especially crave for the fatty tuna. It melts in your mouth :) Their sushi and sashimi are fresh and tasty. This place is a must try. -- Oh dont dine as a group otherwise you will wait forever. more

A bit too hyped up - not all that authentic - great place for large rolls - Fish OK 4/8/2006

This was the first time I tried this hot spot. Waited outside for 30 minutes as expected so I gabbed it up with friends. When we were seated we opted to sit at the bar. The food was good and plenty. Service was friendly and fine. Sashimi was good and well portioned, fresh enough. Rolls were very large and hearty. This place was a bit pricey for individual A La Carte and the select pieces were not all that selective. I have eaten sashimi quite often, practically raised on it, and I really pay attention to cut, color and consistency. The ambiance of this place is humble and cozy. I would easily come here for a drink and a snack. A quick date possibly. For a night for a real celebration, I do think there are other places that for the same money you can get sashimi/sushi that is of higher quality. Definitely one of the better sushi places in manhattan that is reliable in delivering quality goods. Overall, it was OK and fine. I wasn't all that excited really about this place. Mediocre. more

Huge chunks of fish! 9/28/2005

This is a great deal... they charge slightly more than your regular hole-in-the-wall sushi place, but the sushi is mostly fish so it is well worth it. Spectacular and fresh, Tomoe is worth the line that wraps around the corner. You may have to wait 30 minutes to an hour, but once you sit down you'll know why you did. more

The best and cheapest sushi in NY 8/16/2005

I love this place! Tomoe has the freshest, tastiest and cheapest sushi in Manhattan! Tomoe is located in the West Village near Houston Street (and Soho) and right next door to Mario Batali's Lupa. The food is remarkably good for such a bare bone establishment. The toro is mouth-watering and like butter and a fraction of the cost of Nobu and other high-quality sushi places. I'd give it a perfect rating except the place is tiny and the waits can be very long with people lined up outside for hours. Also, the waiters (especially the women) can be kind of surly and rude. But it's worth it to dine here. My tip? You must arrive before 6:30 (that means your entire party because you won't be seated unless everyone is present) to get a seat and not have to wait. more

Sushi is Fresh and Big; Place is Stale and Tiny 8/15/2005

Tomoe delivers high quality sushi and is fabulous for take out. In the restaurant, though, expect ridiculously long lines, tight seating, harried servers, and all the ambience of a sushi shack. The tempura is surprisingly good, too. Appetizers are interesting and vary with season. This seems to be a young and Asian crowd, for the most part, though everyone eventually waits to try the Tomoe experience. more

Japanese-Quality, American-sized portions 8/4/2005

Don't expect to get a seat if you arrive when they open at 5pm. This place fills up fast and for good reason. The sushi and sashimi is excellent. It's always fresh. The California rolls use real crab and not the imitation stuff. If you find a line, it's worth the wait. There are other Japanese places nearby, but they don't match the quality of this place. The decor isn't much to look at, but people pretty much come to this place for the food! They do have other excellent food items on their menu, but the sushi is their shining star. more
