Wonderful Experience 3/10/2011

Love this place! 12/8/2010

Fresh fish, Nice portions. A little pricey but well worth it! The ambiance is a little tight and there is usually a long wait to be seated.. but that is because this place is fantastic. more

My Favorite Sushi Spot 10/18/2010

OK so maybe one look at this place will make you want to turn around but they really do have the BEST sushi/sahimi in NYC. I don't love the maguro sashimi, too red and not as fresh as I'd like but their Yellowtail and Salmon are to die for. No whimpy pieces of sushi here. Large chunks of the freshest fish you can find. I dream about it and you will too!!!!!! more

Great sushi 6/1/2010

This place does serve really good food. You can taste the effort. The sashimi is fresh, the cooked dishes are small but delicious. Come early to beat the line and make friends with the waiter for next time. Pros: food Cons: lines/wait, pricey more

The BEST sashimi I have EVER had! 9/24/2009

This was BY FAR...THE BEST sashimi that I have EVER eaten. For appetizers, my wife and I ordered the baked Sea Bass with a fresh tomato and red chili pepper sauce. (UNREAL!!!) We each ordered the Sashimi Deluxe platter. The pieces of fish were HUGE which usually occurs when quality is replaced by quantity. Nothing could be further from the truth at Tomoe. This sashimi was so jaw droppingly tender and fresh...that it could be described as something of a religious experience!!! This was definitely one of the top 10 food experiences I have EVER had.\r \r Don't let the lines deter you....It is DEFINITELY well worth the wait! Pros: Fresh, large and oh so tender pieces of fish Cons: No reservations... long lines out the door. more

GREAT GREAT SUSHI AAA1 7/13/2009

Tuna and Yellow tail are great Horse macreal is great \r best squid in NYC fantastic rolls and the best salmon skin roll in the world Pros: great fish great service priced right Cons: NONE the place is FANTASTIC more

Best Sushi! 2/7/2009

There's a reason why there is ALWAYS a line outside this place, sushi is always fresh and tasty! I usually get there early so the wait is not so long. I've never had a problem with service but again, I time my visits so it's right before the dinner rush. Pros: It can be pricey Cons: There is usually a line outside more

Not impressed 12/16/2008

People spoke of Tomoe as the Volkswagen of restaurants - priced for the masses but with the same German engineering as the luxury brands. Well, we stood forty minutes in line to find out and we were not impressed. The sushi pieces were huge - so big you could not eat them in one bite. The fish is fresh, but as people who love sushi know, fresh is by far not the only thing fish should be. At Tomoe, every piece was just like every other piece. You could not tell you were eating different fish. The prices were very high - no lower than at some of the top places in NY. Overall, I thought this was a waste of time and money. Tomoe is better than your corner sushi place, but it cannot stand up to the competition in this great city. more

Freshest Fish in town!!!! 12/8/2008

This is by far my favorite sushi place ever!!!! I am not a food expert by any means, but I have eaten in many different sushi restaurants, and all I have to say is that this restaurant has the freshest fish I have ever tried. If you eat here, you have to come here for the sushi or sashimi, the rolls have extra ingredient that take away from the amazing taste of the fish. The toro (tuna) melts in your mouth. You will probably have to wait before getting into the restaurant, but trust me, the wait is well worth it! Pros: Amazingly fresh Fish Cons: It's pricey, but worth the money. more

Really Really Good 10/21/2008

This sushi place is very authentic. The food is delicious but its not a romantic date spot. Check out all the menus around the walls more

Rude wait staff 8/22/2008

After we had been there only 55 minutes, the waitress asked us to leave because there was a long line outside. The sushi is good, but the service is so bad that it's not worth it. more

Extra nice for regulars, not so much for everyone else 8/18/2008

I absolutely love Tomoe. When I get the chance, I come here often because it is right around the corner from my school, NYU Stern. The maki seems to always be negi- style and the fish seems extra oily but not fishy. Particularly fresh. It is a nice change-up from my normal places Blue Ribbon and Yama. If they have the fresh soft-shell crab I recommend it, but be weary, the one in the roll is not the freshest one, its the frozen one, so get the appetizer version. It isn't too heavy on the batter and comes with the typical ponzu sauce. Get there early if you don't want to wait on the line. They do play favorites, mostly they do not seat parties that are not entirely there, but if they recognize you, expect to get special treatment. more

Average sushi, high price, HORRIBLE customer service 8/18/2008

I've been a fan of Tomoe for over 10 years and I have to say that I will NOT go back there again. I have noticed a gradual decline in food quality, service and an increase in prices. There are plenty of sushi options in this city and I would rather spend my money elsewhere. \r \r About two weeks ago, I visited Tomoe with a friend, we were seated quickly but then the experience started to go downhill. After we were seated, we were ignored by the wait staff, we had to flag down 2 different guys before we could order drinks, then the ordeal repated itself when we tried to order food. Once the food was served, we were ignored the entire time until we were ready for our check. We paid with cash and then waiting began, 10 min, 15 min, 20 min...we kept flagging down the waiter to bring out change but they just ignored us. Finally we went to the cash register and asked for our change. After another 5 min, they told us they had already given us our change. We of course protested, they owe us about $45 in change; after another 5 min, they finally brought over our change. We were so annoyed, we left a 5% tip (as a sign of our discontent ) and walked out. \r \r Half way down the block, the waiter came out screaming at us because the tip was too low. We told him about the bad service and he just kept repeating: ""you were at my table, i brought you your food"". We again told him that he didn't do his job, we had to flag him down repeatedly to order drinks, food, and to get our check...and on top of it all, we did not appreciate feeling like we were being ripped off when we had to fight to get our $45 change back. He just kept yelling...ridiculous.\r \r Interestly enough, the same waiter was yelling at another couple when we arrived at the restaurant; only in retrospect did I realize that the waiter was harrasing someone else for leaving too small of a tip. Here's a tip waiter...do a better job and the good tips will follow! Pros: nothing Cons: zero ambiance, rude waiters, long lines, dingy and old (need a new coat of paint and a good cleaning job) more

Average sushi at best at high prices 1/22/2008

I had high expectations for this place, seeing that its a local favorite with 4 1/2 stars. From the minute I walked in, I thought I was in the wrong place. This place is way too cramped. I was forced to sit next to somone who was maybe 6 inches away from me (not in my party) who ate the smelliest food I've ever smelled. I like to be able to eat my meal without hitting someone at the table next to me with my elbows.\r \r \r The waiters were rude, the food was barely average and the prices were too high. On top of all that, I felt that the place could have been a little cleaner. \r \r \r Examples... The ""Avocado Salad"" was some skimpy slices of tasteless avocado on top of raggedy lettuce. The dumplings were good, but they probably buy them from an outside vendor. The rolls were average. They were put together horribly and the fish really didnt have a super fresh taste. The sushi pieces were pretty big, but again lacked that unbelievable flavor. \r \r \r Do yourself a favor and stay away. This is Manhattan, there are thousands of other places where you can spend $75 for two people for dinner and actually walk out saying that was delicious. \r \r Oh yeah, the dirty plastic covering outside the front door is disgusting. Pros: The shumai dumplings Cons: Everything else about the restaurant. more

Worst experience in NYC 1/12/2008

This is the worst sushi expereince I had in NYC. I am a japanese who have high standard for sushi. Tomoe sushi is horrible. The fishes at the sushi bar are fresh. However, it's the amazingly bad sushi chef who ruined everything. The sushi at supermarket are even better. \r \r The day I went, there were 3 inexperienced sushi chef.(One Mexican, one Chinese, one unknown). No offense, but the way they handled sushi is humuliating to sushi. If you have a second and go take a look at bar, how the 3 chef made sushi is exactly like how those fish workers at supermarket cut and clean up fishes for you. Messy and disgesting. \r \r 1) all the fishes at the storage are piled together, instead of seperating them properly. Thus. while you eat Tuna, you can taste Salmon. \r 2) The chef held the raw fishes in their hand so long that the fishes turns warm and unfresh while u ate it. And the cut of the fish are miserable. \r 3)The chef have no idea how to make sushi. They used their ""palm"" to shape the rice..Not only it will make the rice too warm and affect the freshness of fishes, it's also not clean to use your whole palm to handle food that people will eat raw. I am really not sure why the restaurant manager hire someone who don't understand sushi to be chef. Maybe save more cost than hiring real chef?\r \r I personally will only recommend people who never have good sushi before to go there as the price is reasonable. For me, i would rather pay more to have real sushi and not to watch the chef turn some great fishes/seafood into garbage. Pros: Price Cons: Bad sushi, worst chef ever more

Great NYC restaurant, always a good experience 10/22/2007

Tomoe-fresh, fun and unforgettable sushi! 8/19/2007

The ultimate sushi place!! I have never had sushi that melts in your mouth like I've had at Tomoe. The food was awesome and sooo fresh! The presentation, service and food were outstanding. Place is small but cozy with no frills. I came here with a Tomoe regular who has been coming here since back in his college days. Come here early, as I've seen the tables fill up quickly and heard there's a line that usually is out the door and down the street... more
