While this was a decent place for a while, it had gone downhill quite a lot recently. Tomo closed permanently on 2/15/09.

Great Sushi, Fast Attentive Service 2/9/2008

Not the most relaxing sushi resaturant, but definitely one of the nest overall. Great food, great prices and attentive, quick service (which sometimes can make you feel rushed). Pros: Good food, good atmosphere Cons: Sometimes you feel rushed more

Mediocre food and robotic service 11/18/2007

I was drawn to Tomo for the lunch specials and a good experience I had there years ago. But I've been back twice this month and each time the service was impersonal and sullen. Also, each time I had to ask for my change and only once received the proper amount. As for the food I would liken it to the blandest American fare. It's all ho-hum. It seems like the staff really doesn't care about the food or customers. The restaurant is in a great location and clean so they get a decent traffic but don't waste your time. Pros: lunch special price Cons: service, food quality more

The Best Japanese In Town. Great Customer Service. 3/29/2007

Tomo is a fabulous restaurant . The service is just the way it should be COMPLETE! Whether you go alone or with friends you will always get the top of the line customer service. The staff is top notch. The service just makes the food all that more wonderful. The take-out is top-of-the-line. They pack it like if they were setting up for a picnic in the park. I can't say enough about TOMO. I just love it. Pros: Everything! Cons: Nothing. more

Food was okay but I felt rushed 10/3/2006

The food was okay but the lunch specials were really cheap. As for the service, we felt rushed. There's a vulture-like group of waiters standing by the cashier waiting for whoever is done w/ their plate. They came to my table about 3 or 4 times thinking we were already done when in fact we weren't. I just didn't like that service. If I'm going to eat, let me eat instead of hovering over me all the time. Bottom line: If you like decent standard Japanese food this is a good place. Again, it was the lunch special I had (Bento Box) so the other dishes might be worth a try! Pros: Good athmosphere, cheap prices Cons: stalker-like waiters more

Not authentic 8/4/2006

Not only was the service was awful (we were overcharged), and the food was not good (sumeshi didn't taste right, the fish was dry, the Udon broth was salty and something else). It is definitely not authentic Japanese food although it has all the basic Japanese dishes. It is Japanese food misinterpreted by non-Japanese cooks. It is not a restaurant for people who know what Japanese food is, especially sushi. The cost is definitely too high for the quality that we recieved. Would avoid. Pros: the only Japanese like sit-in restaurant in the are Cons: not authentic, terrible service more

delicious! 8/1/2005

okay, so the service isn't super-friendly, but what more can you ask for than good sushi and great prices? the spicy roll combo and the bento box are great, as is the soup and salad. it's definitely worth checking out! Pros: beef negamaki, affordable, bottomless water cup more

tasty! 4/24/2005

I eat here all the time and it's fantastic. Definitely affordable. The rolls are great, and the bento boxes a bargain at $13.95. Close seating, but a clean, pretty place. If you make reservations, I'd ask NOT to be seated in the back room--it's dark, separated from the bathroom by a curtain/folding shade, and for some of the tables, the booth seating is lower than the chair seating--so you'll end up looking up, or down, at half your party. Perfect for 2 people--friends, or an informal date. Pros: good food, pretty, affordable Cons: back room not so nice, close seating more

Good for a Group 3/25/2005

I dined here in late January at the spur of the moment with a group of 8 friends. The food was good, great portions, and accomodated us without a call ahead. I don't recommend going near closing time, or lingering near closing time - I felt rushed to leave. Also, note for people splitting the check: they take either the whole amount on a card or cash - no splitting up smaller amounts on various cards Pros: Good for Campus, Short Wait Cons: No Split Payments more

Don't order sushi take-out 1/30/2005

The food is fine when you're eating at the restaurant, but if you order sushi take-out, you risk the chance of getting the poor cuts of fish they wanted to get rid of. more

Always Good 1/2/2005

Food here is always fresh & tasty! The staff always efficient & friendly. Great Value! Their ginger dressing - YUM! Their delivery is great too! The back room is more romantic. Pros: great value, friendly staff, fast delivery more

so-so for the price near Columbia 5/10/2004

The decor of the restaurant and the service were nice but for the price, the quality of sushi was very diappointing. The mackerel had a bit too much vinegar which seemed to cover up for its lack of freshness and the octopus lacked the moist, cool intensity characteristic of fresh product. Most of the sushi served (salmon, white fish, tuna, etc) was at a palate-displeasing room temperature. For the same price, you can get much better stuff at Sandobe or Sapporo East. Unfortunately, that may not be the easiest option for Columbia students, but hey, if you want to set a standard for sushi, this Tomo may not be the best place to start. Pros: pleasant atmosphere, nice sushi bar setup, nice waiters Cons: , needs fresher sushi, some areas too dark more

Always Good Sushi 3/27/2004

Whenever I crave sushi, I go to Tomo. The food is consistently good and very well priced. My friends and I always have a wonderful time here. The service and ambience are solid...but the food will keep you coming back! Highly recommend the Thunder Roll, Volcano Roll, Agedashi-Tofu...Always busy, so try to catch it on an off time. Pros: Consistent good food, Very well priced, Good atmosphere more

Relaxing, good food 7/22/2003

The Bento box on mon, tues, wed is a great deal (10 bucks) for a good amount of tasty food. Their sushi is fairly priced, and very fresh. The waiters are also surprisingly courteous. No wait usually, if anyhting 15 min. Pros: Food, Service, Value more

Fresh sushi at great prices 6/3/2003

While a student at Columbia, I frequented this place twice per week. The fish is always fresh, the house salad comes with a fantastic dressing and the steamed veggie dumplings are great. The service can be inconsistent, but chatting with the waitstaff while giving your order usually results in much more attentive service. Very reasonable prices. more

Very Good Food 5/15/2003

Eaten there many times, never disappointed. Great appetizers and bento box very generous--always take some home for lunch. Great ginger salad dressing and excellent sushi. Recently tried the vegetarian sushi--excellent--will get it again! Save room for green tea or red bean ice cream--they will combine if asked. more

fresh & fantastic 8/22/2002

Always a very solid sushi o sashimi meal. Don't come here expecting fancy cooked meals - the delight is that they actually have great sushi. Not great presentation of some other non-sushi meal but definitely great sushi. Melt in your mouth kind of sushi. Nobooers go home. You don't eat sushi. Pros: fresh, tasty, lively college crowd Cons: far uptown more
