Overpriced, standing grease, burnt 8/27/2009

What a mistake. This is consistently the worst pizza I've ever had. The thin crust is always soaked, SOAKED with standing grease. Be prepared to knife and fork a hot slice for the sole reason that the crust is so saturated with grease that it's too floppy to support ANYTHING. The staff at 14 and Middlebelt are clueless and pompous when asked about menu items and prices. I have no idea why this place consistently is reviewed to be have really good pizza. I have had their product enough times (through work functions) and I can no longer bear to eat it. I *always* have to literally soak up the grease with several layers of paper towel before it's edible. If you want to try ""Tomatoes Apizza"" without paying an arm and a leg (this is pizza is way overpriced), smash the middle of your favorite pizza with a rubber mallet, pan-fry some kind of meat and cheese products and pour JUST the grease drippings all over it, then burn the crust, hike up the price by $15- and voila- Tomatoes ""Apizza""! The grease hardens overnight, so trying to eat the stuff the next day is basically having a slice of coagulated grease (and you'll notice that the slices now stand straight out, supporting the weight of the toppings because the grease has hardened). I honestly can't understand why people are so GAGA over this. There's no art here, no skill, no ""Cletus trained his pizza art under a Buddhist pizza master for 10 years and now he brings you this""- it's just a poorly made, crappy pizza. Pros: Feel important by paying $20 for crappy pizza Cons: Crappy Soggy Pizza more

Absolutely the best pizza in MI 1/1/2009

If you want authentic pizza this is the place. I have read reviews that were not helpful to me. I have always enjoyed a thick crust until I went to Tomatoes APizza ! Amazing. In fact my neighbor just asked me where I got the delicious pizza I gave her a slice of last time. So went online to read the reviews and was shocked. Some were beyond rude ! I felt it was necessary for me to write a review that reflects how truly fabulous this pizza is. From the excellent sauce to the crust and everything in between. The staff was excellent and the waiting time was not any longer than any other pizza I had waited for. So try it.....seriously....again it is absolutely the best pizza I have had in MI . If you like thick crust this is not the pizza for you...fact! more

AWSOME PIZZA 12/19/2008

We went to the location on halsted, the pizza is very thin, but i loved it. We ordered a large sampler(recomended by our waitress) it was HUGE, the pizza was part white, part green, part fresh mozzerella and part classic, my favorite was the white and the staff was very friendly we will definatly be back. Pros: Great Pizza and Friendly Staff more

Not my favorite pizza 6/16/2008

So I tried Tomatoes Apizza after reading the reviews (we went to the one at Grand River & Haggerty). We were not quite sure what to expect. We had the salad bar (really good & fresh), cheesy bread & a pizza (1/2 red w/ sausage & 1/2 green). First off - the pizza ginormous. So we definetly did not need the cheesy bread. The pizza itself had really strong garlic and authentic tomato sauce, which I liked because it was so fresh. The crust is very thin, which I was expecting, but I did not care for it. It was somewhat burned & kind of hurt my jaw to eat. Leftover were not good at all - the crust was even tougher the second day. The restaurant decor is very plain/uninspired, and does not serve alcohol. I like to try new restaurants and support the local ones, but I guess I like my Buddy's pizza better. Pros: fresh toppings & salad Cons: ambiance & thin crust more

Burned at the edges pizza for a King's ransom 4/29/2008

A Darn Fine Pie 3/10/2008

Great pizza! Great pizza, and unlike most of what is offered in metro Detroit. East Coast-style pizza, with a cracker-thin, crispy crust, and a sauce that actually tastes of tomatoes (novel concept). If your idea of pizza is delivered in 30 minutes or less, or $5 large pizzas, please stay away. You'll only hurt yourself.\r \r However, if you enjoy a quality pie made by cooks that care about their product, c'mon down! White pie, red pie, crab apizza. Try something different!\r \r Is this the best pizza in Detroit? Well, maybe not. But it is definitely one of the best, and the best East Coast-style pie in the area. How can you go wrong with that? Pros: Fantastic pies! Cons: Too far a drive from my home ;-) more

Nice for A Change 4/28/2007

The GREAT POINTS:\r \r This truly is ""different' Pizza- definately more gourmet and for a certain taste. The ingredients are far superior to what you would find in even the best Italian ristorante. Beer and wings with this pizza would be a sin. No one has commented yet on the pasta, which with the piping hot chunks of fresh mozzarella I thought was divine. Shortly after moving into the neighborhood, we received a flyer for an entirely free dinner (not inexpensive by any means) - Lg. Pizza, Pasta, Salad, Pop and Breadsticks, which was a wonderful treat.\r \r NEEDS IMPROVEMENT:\r \r While the staff that answers the phone for carry-out is extremely professional (you never hear them say ""Please Hold"" when they answer the call) the wait for the delivery or to pick up the pizza can be very lengthy. Once I called for a delivery and an hour later, there was still no pizza. They had marked me for ""pick-up"". While they made fresh food and delivered it shortly, there was no discount offered- and I had 2 very crabby pre-schoolers waiting for their pizza. \r \r The only complaint on the pizza is that it does not reheat well, but maybe if it did, it wouldn't be so good fresh :)\r \r All in all, I would say that anybody within driving distance really needs to give this pizza a try.\r \r more

A true Wooster street clone if not better 12/29/2006

My family is from New Haven and I attended college there. When I first moved to Michigan, I gave up pizza all together after eating what the area had to offer. But thanks to Mike Weinstein and Tomatoes Apizza, I no longer have to travel to New Haven to get a great pizza. Crust is perfect, sauce has just the right flavors and Mike has gone one better with some varieties that are lacking on Wooster Street. His white pizza is to die for. Give his Crab Pizza a try and also the pizza of the month, you will not be disappointed. more

Best authentic Italian Pizza 11/1/2006

This pizza is nothing like you have ever tasted! They are giant slices with only fresh ingrediants. My favorite is the spinach because they use actual fresh leaf spinach, not from a can so it gets crispy. They also have a great salad bar that includes balsamic vinigarett, sliced meats and sliced mozzarella cheese. Fridays are all you can eat pizza buffet and it is worth it. It is definately a place to check out becuase it is so unique. The atmosphere is also like a small family place. Nothing flashy or special but comfortable. All of the waitresses and staff are friendly. Not a pizza I would recommend eating at home becuase it is so huge and thin crust I don't think it woudl hold up very well. Pros: Amazing Pizza, Best in Detroit! Cons: The buffet isnt every day! more

Good but not New Haven 7/8/2006

Just returned from a trip to New Haven and a wonderful pizza at Frank Pepe's on Wooster Street. I was told by the owner of Tomatoes that it was the place to go for great pizza. He was\r right on. On the other hand this restaurant has good but hardly memorable pizza in the same\r way. My criteria are pretty simple: Mozarella cheese with real flavor and a stringy consistency\r when piping hot. Pepperoni that is not paper thin and has a kick to it. (Hand sliced if possible) Tomato sauce that has a spicy flavor. Thin crispy crust..... On this basis I would say that Tomatoes Apizza has a ways to go to get to this level. With a little tweaking, this hard working\r owner chef can get there. more

A Pizza Experience! 12/31/2005

The pizza at Tomatoes Apizza will be more familiar to East Coast diners or those who have actually eaten the real thing in Italy. Chicago deep-dish it ain't. Think very thin crust that has a flavor and texture all its own. The ingredients are straight-foward (cheese, tomoatoes, basil, garlic) and the pizzas are a tribute to a heritage of simple, hearty elemental flavors. Try a red and a white. There are special pizzas served every month. No other Detroit pizzeria does it quite this way and you're unlikely to get pizza like this anywhere else in the Midwest. The restaurant is pretty spare so take-out and use your own candles and red-white checked tablecloth. Mangia! Pros: traditional pizza, inexpensive, quality ingredients Cons: interior restaurant more

Call it Abeets 7/29/2005

I lived near New Haven Connecticut over twenty years ago. We used to go to Pepe's, Sally's and the Spot. These places are now owned by the same family and serve the same style pizza, which they call Abeets. The Pizza from New Haven is what they serve in Northern Italy. It is thin cristed, has just the right balance of sauce, crust and cheese and melts in your mouth. Now Mike, the owner of Tomatoes, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute; the best cooking school in the world. Mike ""went underground"" and learned how to make New Haven Style pizza by working at Sally's. He learned from the masters. These is nothing like Tomatoes between here and New Haven. Whenever I go back east I make a pilgimage to New Haven. But now I really am missing noting. Bravo Mike! Try Tomatoes Abeets. You won't be sorry. Pros: Taste, Authenticity, Value Cons: None, None, None more

User review by fatefrederick 6/5/2005

I was skeptical because I'm used to what we think is ""traditional"" pizza, like sauce and pepperoni. Plus, I don't like tomatoes which was the main ingredient on the pizza we ate. Anyway, I was more than impressed, and I'm a picky eater. I'm happy I happened to move right across the street because I will definitely dine there again and again!! more

Bravo! Best Pizza in Detroit 5/18/2005

Best pizza in Detroit maybe in the midwest. Puts all chain stores and most mom and pop pizza stores to shame. Finally we get some REAL Pizza in Detroit. I know because I lived in Italy for six months and this stuff would pass for great pizza even there. HIGHLY recommended if you are a thin crust pizza maniac. Pros: enthusiastic staff, the best ingridients, pizza of the month Cons: need more locations more

Over rated and burned 4/10/2005

Nothing near what the newspaper clippings indicate. Pizza was burned and blackened around the edeges and tasted like cardboard. Twice the phone order was taken down incorrectly that resulted in additional waiting. Not recommended. more

Thin Crust to Perfection 6/13/2004

If you want good food and good value, this is the place. This definately northern Italian pizza (the further south you go, the thicker the crust). Very thin crust and flavorful toppings that complement rather than overwhelm. (This is not the place to go if you like double crust or Chicago-style pizza.) The pizza is almost as good as Pepe's, one of the original US Pizzarias founded in New Haven, CT over 100 years ago (when they were still called ""Cheese Pies""). Dining room in Farminton Hills is clean, well lit and well laid out, but you definately go for the food rather than the decor. Pros: Flavorful, Good Value, Cheerful & Friendly more

Best in Metro Detroit- maybe the midwest 10/19/2003

These guys do it right- thin crust with a nice chew but too hard, delicious fresh toppings judiciously placed atop it and friendly staff to boot. I've had pizza in Naples-these guys could proudly serve their pie in that city, I don't think people would know the difference. Pros: Crusty perfection, Fresh toppings, Value oriented Cons: need a Detroit branch more

Heavenly Perfection 2/16/2003

As a recent Tomatoes convert I can't say enough good things about it. I order my pizzas at night when the head manager Frank is working. He makes the absolute best pizza in the whole world. If your looking for heavenly taste done by the best pizza maker try Tomatoes of Farmington. I personally love the white pizzza. Try one I am sure you wil agree. Pros: good parking, homey feel, best pizza more

The Fresher The Better 11/29/2002

Pizza can be pretty good here but with all thin crust pizzas, they just don't carry out well. more
