Great salads, too 4/8/2006

It seems most of the reviews praise The Tomato Head's pizza. I'm not a pizza fan, but I love the Tomato Head for its salads. My favorite is the Greek salad. First of all, salads are very reasonably priced. Some casual dining restaurants have pushed salads up to $10 or so...not so here. Next, the salads are huge! It's almost always more than I can eat. Finally, the salads are very high-quality. It's not just a bowl of lettuce topped with a few cucumbers. The salads are packed with the good stuff...lots of feta cheese, tomatos, olives. I'm getting hungry just writing about the place! The Tomato Head is also one of the most relaxing restaurants in town. You don't wait long for your food, but there's no feeling that things are rushed. Waiters and waitresses aren't tripping over each other and bus boys aren't banging dishes. It's just a very peaceful place. I love it! more

The Tomato Head 12/12/2005

I am a really big fan of pesto pizza and this is the first place I go when I am in the mood for it. The food is excellent, especially the pizzas but I also like the salads. It's a good place to bring your family or you could just get it to go. There are pizza places that are closer to my house but I always pick this one first because I think it's the best. more

One of the best places in town. 11/2/2005

The Tomato Head offers food you can't get anywhere else. Where else can people at the same table eat roast beef sandwiches and vegan salads? The pizza is amazing and I agree that the sundried tomato and pesto is the best. The salads are always cold and fresh and I can never get enough of the Tahini dressing. I love the outdoor seating area. The indoor art gallery is always entertaining while you are waiting on your food. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you MUST eat here! more

Tomato Head 9/13/2005

This is the best vegetarian/vegan restaraunt in Knoxville! They have super specials every day as well as great soups, sandwiches, pizza slices (with ingredients like carrots, pineapple, feta and sundried tomatoes) and great salads. Try their bread and tahini as an appetizer. The tahini is really great and you will feel almost full before your food even comes. To finish it off try one of their super cookies before you leave! more

A Knoxville institution -- a rare vegan-friendly place 8/16/2005

The Tomato Head is ideal for lunch or Sunday brunch, slightly less so for dinner. The menu includes pizzas, sandwiches, and burritos, all delicious, and with some very creative combinations of very fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is excellent -- they are often displaying work by local artists on the walls. In addition, the Market Square location is perfect -- you can enjoy the shops on the square, or entertainment at the Tennessee Theater on Gay Street or in the Old City. more

Still the Best Vegetarian Meals in Knoxville! 8/16/2005

The first time I visited The Tomato Head in Market Square was about 15 years ago when I was still a UT student and I actually ventured off campus because I'd heard of this place. Back in those days, the only pizza we ate was at Vatican Pizza in the Fort. Now Tomato Head has never been able to offer entertainment on the scale of the old Vatican, but I was instantly hooked on the food. Tomato Head has changed buildings in the Square since then, but my old favorites are still on the menu. My favorite pizza is the Sundried Tomato and Pesto. TH pesto is unbeatable. My favorite sandwich is the Kepner melt with baked tofu, Monterrey jack cheese, pineapple, walnuts, roasted onion and pesto ...it is delicious. The bread is always fresh baked too. My favorite salad is the warm spinach with baked tofu and mushroom. The new hot thing at Tomato Head is Sunday Brunch, Can't wait to go again. I didn't give them a perfect score because the prices have gone up so much over the years and portions have gone down (skimping on tofu and dressing? come on). But I still Loooove it. check out their cute website too: www.tomatohead.com more
