Great Izakaya 8/20/2005

We have gone their just once and it was great. This hole in the wall izakaya is very crowded and reservations are a must. The two waitresses provide excellent service despite being overworked. The sashimi wasn’t the greatest, but all of their other dishes were excellent. I enjoyed the grilled musubi, which resembled a corn dog on a stick, only this was made of rice instead. Definitely worth going back. more

Enough Japanese food to last a lifetime 8/9/2005

...is what it seems like when you gaze at the menu of Tokkuri-tei. The selection is mind-boggling and covers the gamut of dishes from raw to steamed to simmered to fried, etc. It is easy to forget what you ordered so it's a wonder how the waitresses can when it seems like they don't write anything down even when it's busy (and it does get busy). The food is solid...not much to complain about and many have clever names such as Asparagus Buta-Bata--buta meaning pork and bata referring to butter, so asparagus and pork cooked in butter. And if you've noticed that doesn't sound so Japanese, but they have many items that are Japanese but have a different ethnic twist (several items use balsamic vinegar as flavor for instance). But the shining star of this restaurant is their sushi bar. The freshest sushi toppings are sliced generously and cover just the right amount of rice--you'll also pay a premium for this quality though. If you're adventuresome (and patient), you can even try foie gras (goose liver) sushi. And if you order the amaebi (sweet shrimp), they'll even fry the shell for you to eat. The menu has a great selection of sake as well and offers a brief description of it's flavor. more
