Tokio 7 12/30/2005

They call this place "the poor man's house of style" and it lives every bit up to that nickname. I try to go every week because they always get in new shipments of great merchandise. Everything is a bargain. High-end clothes here are affordable--cashmere sweaters for $50, suit sets for $150, elegant dresses and handbags. The only thing that is not that great is the shoe selection, unless you have big feet. All the smaller sizes don't have that great a selection of styles. And the cherry on top is that the staff is all extremely nice. more

Designer Consignment 8/17/2005

Designer consignment at its best--sellers get 50 percent of the profits--this funky hideaway is often the first stop for shoppers on a day-long vintage spree. East Village label hounds drop off their designer cast-offs, then pick up an oversized Hermes handbag, almost-new Burberry coat or pair of hard-to-find '60s tinted sunglasses. The labels are limitless, with racks that sound like a runway line-up list. Prada, Gucci, D&G, and Miu Miu have all come and gone and come again from the dramatic, even theatrical, stock. Helmut Lang shoes are here this morning gone this afternoon, but a pleated Issey Miyake frock or bizarro Vivienne Westwood jacket might hang on the racks for weeks, waiting for some love from its next adoring owner. A few no-name pieces make the cut too, if the owner finds them strangely appealing. more
