IN THE MIX: Pancake review with special guest Jessica Luza 3/12/2012

This weekend I had the honor of actress Jessica Luza (who some of you may know from ?The Lost & Found Family,? and most recently from her guest starring role on ?House?) join me as a reviewer for Ma?amCakes. Jessica and I visited the infamous - and I say infamous based on the line in the photo above - Toast Bakery Cafe on 3rd St and Harper Ave in Los Angeles, CA. Toast typically is this crowded partly because it has been featured in TV shows such as ?Rachel Zoe,?The Hills,? ?Entourage,? ?Rachel Ray,? and even the movie ?No Strings Attached.? Or perhaps Toast is typically this crowded because of its fantastic food - especially, their pancakes! When Jessica and I were deciding on pancakes, I immediately went with the Cinnamon Walnut Pancakes, while Jessica was debating between the Tri-Berry Pancakes and the Multigrain Pancakes - which happen to be Toast?s most popular pancake. ?I definitely appreciate all their pancake options,? says Jessica, ?I?ve been here a hundred times, but never even thought about checking their pancake menu!? Enter, Ma?amCakes! After the waiter came and went several times, we finally decided on the Cinnamon Walnut Pancakes, and the Tri-Berry Pancakes. Good. Choices. First of all, as Jessica and I were not starving, one of the main pros of our order was we had the option of choosing one specialty, or one Buttermilk, pancake for $5.99, as opposed to a full order of three pancakes. Keep in mind, though, this option is only included inside the restaurant, and not in Toast?s online menu. The Cinnamon Walnut Pancake, a specialty pancake I?ve never had, was a perfect blend of cinnamon, walnut, and pancake fluff. The pancake was lite, not greasy, and tasted just as fresh in the first bite as the last. The Cinnamon Walnut Pancake was perfectly topped with extra fresh bananas - they couldn?t have picked a more appropriate topping. This dish was wonderfully tasty and creative. Jessica?s Tri-Berry Pancake was a beautiful assortment of pancake, fruits, and pecans - but did it taste as good as it looked? ?Wow, these are great. They?re definitely lite and airy, and actually taste healthy - but wait, is that even possible? I mean, they?re pancakes!? They probably tasted lite and airy (as did mine) due to the fact they weren?t first run through a butter churn - as many pancakes are - before placed in front of us. Jessica?s only note was ?I?d actually prefer the fruit inside the pancake, only because it would make it less dry, juicier, and more flavorful.? When taking a bite of Jessica?s dish, I actually agreed with her. As per my review from Jinky?s Cafe, perhaps Toast should adapt the option of where to place the toppings. But in my dish, however, I did prefer the bananas on top only because the walnuts were already embedded in the pancake. While the Tri-Berry Pancakes look beautiful, at the end of the day, it?s all about how they taste! Ma?amCakes? motto right there. When asking Jessica which specialty pancake she?ll get next time, she replied ?definitely the Banana Chocolate Chip.? All and all, while the restaurant is called Toast, fortunately for the pancakes, they?re lacking the butter! Thank you so much Jessica, for being a part of Presidents? Day Brunch with Ma?amCakes! Very delicious 11/20/2011

I like the food there. I forgot what I ordered, but I know I remembered liking the place more

Don't let the host make you leave 8/17/2009

Beyond the rude front service the food is great but the manager does not care how the host gave us rude treatment and said that if you do not like the way the host speak to you go some where else. more

A Nice Trendy Westside Eatery! I Will Be Back! 7/29/2009

The location is Great! The food was decent. The service was mediocore at best. After we were seated, the server assistant immediately asked if we wanted to order beverages. That's where the good service pretty much ended. After about 10 minutes, unable to secure even a modicum of attention from the staff, I finally broke down and asked a ramdom employee where my server was. He was in fact our server. He was extremely dismissive and said he'd be with us shortly. Evidently, he was an aspiting actor, in character to play a snobby waiter at a trendy westside restaurant. He should have no problem landing the part! Eventually, he took our orders and our dishes arrived shortly. The soft scrambled eggs I ordered were hard, so I politely asked my server if he could possibly request another order of soft scrambled eggs to which he replied, he would try. Try? Wow, what chance did I have? The second order was also hard scrambled. I was perplexed as to how the chef was unable to master the complexity of soft scrambled eggs aftter two tries. Hint: try serving them before they starts to brown. All of the other food was really good. Actually, that was a masterful use of understatement and unfair, the waffle with strawberries and bananas was the BEST I've ever had! Overall, it was a nice pleasant experience for both myself and my date; I don't go there for the service anyways! Pros: Good Food and Great Location! Cons: Questionable Service and Challenging Parking more

Yummy yummy yum...im talking about the staff 3/27/2009

A friend's brother brought me here for brunch one lazy Sunday and I proceeded to come back for the next four days, bringing a different friend each time. I am completely hooked on their salads, steak sandwich, granola & fruit ....but then again, I haven't tried a single thing on the menu that wasn't orgasmically delicious. Speaking of orgasmic...their staff is hands down one of the best-looking groups in LA and so friendly. And the vibe of the place is to die for. At night it's even candlelit! Come here and bring a friend...you may have to wait a little bit, but it's worth it! Pros: food...staff...people watching Cons: parking more

good food, bad service 3/1/2009

sunday 1pm at toast is definitely crowded, so we were prepared for the 20 minute wait for the 3 of us. we were seated at a sofa which was kind of hard to eat, so we asked if we could switch to a table. the waitress pointed at a corner table for 2 and said we can move there. ... obviously we couldn't fit the 3 of us there and she was clearly just trying to get us to shut up. oh well. the waiter seemed impatient and unfriendly. actually he seemed a little reluctant to serve/talk to us at all. Pros: salads, sweet potato fries Cons: really bad service more

un eco friendly and rude 2/3/2009

food and service was okay, then i asked the manager if he would consider alternatives for plastic containers for take out and he said it was too expensive!!!! give me a break! you would charge 14 dollars for a sandwich but not pay a extra nickle for paper packaging, in my opinion speak with your dollars and refuse to eat there unless they go more eco friendly. tell all your friends, lets ban plastic in LA. more

My Current Favorite Restaurant!!!!! 1/6/2009

Not only is the food wonderful the restaurant staff is too! I cannot wait to return for another great meal. 12/31/2008

I have had breakfast at Toast twice and both times I have had a great meal. I could not leave without indulging in one of their delicious cupcakes. On my last visit I left a photo album of my grandchildren and Kenny was kind enough to mail it to me. That is what I call ""going the extra mile"". I cannot wait to dine at Toast on my next visit to California. more

Love this place 12/5/2008

I have been eating at Toast for years now and i love it. I eat at toast almost 5 times a week and have never found anything in my food. I have a feeling that some people who write reviews are workers from other restuaurants. It is sad that some companies would bash other companies like that. Toast is the best. Come out and try it for yourself. Pros: fresh food Cons: parking more

Black creature in my omelette! 11/9/2008

Not only was the service horribly slow, there was part of a c**ckroach in my omelette. This place is disgusting! more

Not Worth the Wait 10/27/2008

This place is so crowded for brunch on the weekends that it makes going there unpleasant. The food is good, but their are plenty of other good brunch spots around town where you don't have to wait an hour to be seated. Pros: Good cup cakes Cons: LONG WAIT more

Best Red Velvet Cupcakes 10/17/2008

Okay I love this place. They have incredible salads, sandwiches, and OMG the RED VELVET CUPCAKES are to die for!! Great Service and fresh products. Check it out immediately!! Pros: great food..need I say more Cons: parking sux more

Just the Best 10/10/2008

Love this place, the wait is worth it. Good service and if it wasn't for the ""illegal Mexicans"" I doubt the food would be as good. Always have the French Toast the best I've ever had, fluffy and filling. Decent prices and wide variety of food as well. Pros: Location and Service Cons: The people that forget Hollywood is a city, not a personality. more

More ?Toast,? please! 7/3/2008

This is one of my favorite spots for brunch in the city. I love their Favorite omelette (yes, that?s its name) with feta cheese, avocado, spinach and sundried tomatoes. It?s like a bite of California and the Mediterranean all rolled into one. Their French toast also incredibly fluffy and sweet without being too syrupy. It?s really nice to sit outside the restaurant and people watch or sit inside and let your eyes feast upon the cakes and other sweet treats behind the counter. Only downside is street parking in the area can be hard to come by and waits on the weekends get long. But the food definitely makes up for it! more

Has potential... 6/9/2008

I went for lunch here quite a few times now, & I cannot say the service is getting any worse....nor any better. The 1st time I was alone for a weekday lunch & it took a good 15 minutes for me to noticed at the table. Eventually I had put my order in, & I don't think I saw the server again until I was about to leave. I had the sandwich combo with soup & side (turkey baguette, potato corn chowder, fries) which was really good. I did get a free cupcake out of this (my server saw me selecting my dessert & apologized for taking so slow.) Which inspired me to come back again with a friend. She too was familiar with the slow service, but overall I guess we came for the food (we both had breakfast items) & left semi-satisfied. Finally, I took 2 friends from out of town & although they even brought up how bad the service was, the food was enjoyable. I noticed how some people commented on how the busboys didn't seem to understand a thing. Sadly, this is true. You ask them one simple question & they go blank. Other places don't seem to have this problem. But Toast could be better. I feel bad when other writers here said it used to be really good. I wish I was able to come back then to experience it in its heyday... Pros: Most dishes I had were very good Cons: parking can be tough, SLOW SERVICE more

Great breakfast! 5/22/2008

I go to Toast all the time for a late breakfast. It's got a great, long menu and offers a little something for everyone. I'm especially a fan of their create-your-own scramblettes. Their fruit cups are excellent and always consist of very fresh fruit. I don't often get sandwiches or salads, but I've heard their salads are good and they always look good when I see other people get them. I also like that they have a bakery there where you can get fresh orange juice or cupcakes (which are really good considering the fact that they're only $2 something!). The only downside is that they are always busy and the wait can be very long if you go on the weekend. Pros: Food, loacation Cons: Parking is hard, always a wait more

Not impressed at all 5/22/2008

I was told I had to go to Toast for the best meal of my life. Well, I went and had the worst meal of my life. Pros: Good name Cons: Bad place more
